Book An African Commentary on the Letter of James

Download or read book An African Commentary on the Letter of James written by J. Ayodeji Adewuya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is a necessary but an often neglected continent. So also is the letter of James necessary but neglected. Yet there is perhaps no biblical text that speaks to the life situation in Africa in the twenty-first century more directly than the book of James. An African Commentary on the Letter of James is an attempt to hear the message of James’s letter from a non-Western social and cultural setting. It seeks to demonstrate how one’s worldview, language, culture, economic status, and religion make a significant difference in appropriating the message of the biblical text. The commentary explores how the written word impacts the readers in a predominantly oral culture. It attempts to hear what James is saying from a different context but, in doing so, explains James with a different “voice.” Like the letter of James itself, the commentary uses pithy sayings, proverbs, and aphorisms to explain the meaning of the text.

From beginning to end, the book is shaped for pastors, teachers, and scholars. McKnight is less interested in shedding new light on James than on providing a commentary for those who want to explain the letter and its significance to congregations and classes. This commentary is accessible to a broad readership, at once full of insight and of good sense and wit that makes for good reading. The Letter of James is an especially helpful source for consultation as to what James is about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books in the New Testament are better known or more often quoted as the Letter of James. Because James is so concise, so intensely practical, and so filled with memorable metaphors and illustrations, it has become one of the two or three most popular New Testament books in the church. This highly original commentary seeks to make the Letter of James clear and applicable to Christian living today. Interacting with the latest views on James but keeping academic references to a minimum, Douglas Moo first introduces the Letter of James in its historical context and then provides verse-by-verse comments that explain the message of James both to its first readers and to today's church.

Download or read book A Commentary on the Letter of James written by Shirley Sides and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a devotional commentary on the letter to the Christians in New Testament times, by the disciple James. He is teaching the life of faith and how it is outworked in the life of the Christian. This is no dry doctrine, but full of life and vitality. All who follow the Lord Jesus have the same Spirit of grace and faith. All will be taught by the same Spirit and their lives will be full of good fruit to God. This is not an aura of pseudo-spiritism, but the life of God worked out in thoughts, words and deeds. Without Faith it is impossible to please God, and without works it is impossible to see faith. The key phase is.... "Faith without works is dead..."

In the Letter of James, the writer sends encouragement to the early church, in the midst of the struggles and strife that marked its early days. Theologian Martha L. Moore-Keish guides the reader through the brief but important letter, most known for its discussion of the importance of actions to make a true life of faith. The volumes in the Belief series offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies and the Christian tradition, noted scholars focus less on traditional, historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the text.
