Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on Church Music The circumstances under which we are assembled seem say to us, One generation passeth away and another cometh; the places that now know us shall know us 'no more eve though life be continued, its occupations may change, and t dearest connections and friendships are uncertain and in cure. We are, indeed, taught these lessons by daily occ renees, and he who has not learned that there is no stability worldly pursuits, nor permanence in worldly pleasures, h made but little progress in human experience, But when looking back upon the past, we meet as we now meet, know ing that we can never come together again under like circum stances, we can hardly prevent thoughts in relation to condition and prospects most solemn and afi'ecting. Download or read book Music in the Church Classic Reprint written by George Wauchope Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music in the Church The subject Of our study is Music in the Church, i.e. Music subject to the influence and employed in the service Of religion. Like all the other arts, music has been brought into close association with religion, and has not only been able to render valuable aid to the Church in her worship, but has itself been enormously benefited and enriched by the new Spirit breathed into it by that association. It was indeed the demands made by the Church upon the art that awakened it from the lethargy in which it lay, and urged it forward to develop its resources. The early history Of music, once it attained the dignity Of an art worthy to have its history recorded, is almost entirely a history of sacred music. But the association of music with religion is not merely a matter Of past history. TO the present day that association continues with most beneficial results both to the Church and to the art of music. True, with the advance Of the art it was able to strike out new forms and to develop along other lines. Sacred music, instead Of being the whole of the art, is now only one branch Of it. But it is a branch of the utmost importance. The art would be incalculably the poorer were the musical wealth which it has poured into the treasury Of the Church not credited to it. And on the other hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Catholic Church Music Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catholic Church Music Classic Reprint written by Richard Runciman Terry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Church Music Roman Pontificate, We consider it Our first duty, without further delay, to raise Our voice at once in reproof and condemnation of all that is seen to be out of harmony with the right rule above indicated, in the functions of public worship and in the performance of the ecclesiastical oflices. Filled as We are with a most ardent desire to see the true Christian spirit flourish in every respect and be preserved by all the faithful, We deem it necessary to provide before aught else for the sanctity and dignity of the temple, in which the faithful assemble for no other object than that of acquiring this spirit from its foremost and indispens able fount, which is the active participation in the most holy mysteries and in the public and solemn prayer of the Church. And it is vain to hope that the blessing Of Heaven will descend abundantly upon us, when our homage to the Most High, instead of ascending in the odour of sweetness, puts into the hand of the Lord the scourges wherewith of old the Divine Redeemer drove the unworthy profaners from the Temple. Hence, in order that no one for the future may be able to plead in excuse that he did not clearly under stand his duty and that all vagueness may be eliminated from the interpretation of matters which have already been commanded, We have deemed it expedient to point out briefly the principles regulating sacred music in the functions of public worship, and to gather together in a general survey the principal prescriptions of the Church against the more common abuses in this subject. We do therefore publish, moln proprio and with certain knowledge, Our present Instruction to which, as to a juridical code of sacred music (quasi a codice ginn'dice della mnsica sacra), We will with the fulness of Our Apostolic Authority that the force of law be given, and We do by Our present handwriting impose its scrupulous observance on all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Church Music: A Book for Pastors and People They are performing the act of devotion, which, it is understood, is to be engaged in by other people - inasmuch as the music is such as to absorb, for itself alone, their entire attention. Sharps and accidentals, generally, are imminent, and must be sharp-ly looked after. One of the basses sees an ominous flat coming, which he is troubled in mind about. Perhaps he secretly resolves to ignore it altogether: he can overleap it, and fairly reach the terra firma of the note beyond. A tenor singer sees a passage in the prospect that lies just in his voice upon this he is preparing to display himself, and make the auditors for the moment aware that there is a tenor singer in the choir. A contralto is regarding with trepidation a duet ap preaching, which she is to sing alone with the first so prano. Book A First Series of Church Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Series of Church Songs Classic Reprint written by S. Baring-Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Series of Church Songs Of late years Messrs. Sankey and Moody, and, later still, the Salvation Army, have introduced religious songs which have at once become favourites, because the airs have been secular, and, in some cases, the words rollicking. The result has been a distinct lowering of the reverence of the people for holy things and holy words. Sacred aspirations and names, at which angels and devils bow, are trolled out or roared to music-hall tunes, sometimes by tipsy men, and often without thought. The tendency of these songs is not only to irreverence and profanity, but also to encourage heretical views of the scheme of Salvation. Justification is upheld as a sentimental outgush of excited hysteria, not as the gradual growth of a spiritual life; and this mischievous teaching poisons the sources of the moral conscience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Church Music IT is eminently appropriate that the story of the Evolution of Music should be written by a clergyman. A retrospect which reaches back no farther in the land from which we derive both our language and our literature than the third decade of the thirteenth century will discover that the first English school of music of which any trace has been discovered, was founded about that time by John of Porn sete, a monk attached to the famous monastery at Reading, in Berkshire. Its records still survive, and the curious scholar may find them in a manuscript bearing date 1226, which is known as the Reading ms., and which is among the treasures of the British Museum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Music, Vol. 1: June, 1906 A change of considerable importance is found in the Ger man tradition Of the plainchant. In the earliest staff nota tion codices Of German origin we find a frequent use of the minor third a - c, where codices of other countries have the second a - b-flat or a - b. Wagner has no doubt that the ver sion of the non - German codices is the original, but thinks that the change is older than the Oldest staff notation mss. He is of opinion that the reason for the change is to be found in the difficulty that attaches to the semitone. Rie mann, in the work quoted above, sees in these things rem nants of the pentatonic scale, of which traces are to b found in many other phrases Of plainchant, such as the in tonation of the per omnia before the Preface. Radically the two views are identical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
