Book excerpt: Lieutenant Colonel Harold Fenton Jacob (1866-1936) was an officer in the British Army, stationed primarily in Yemen at the turn of the 20th century. He served as British political agent at Dhala and chief political officer to the Aden Field Force. Between 1917 and 1920 he was an advisor on southwestern Arabian affairs to the British high commissioner in Egypt. The work presented here, Kings of Arabia, examines the history of the Ottoman Turkish presence in the Hejaz region of Arabia, but focuses mainly on the small Arab kingdoms of Yemen, most of which later became part of the British-controlled Aden Protectorate. The book provides detailed background on the history of Yemen from the 17th century until the aftermath of World War I, including information on the rulers of the Sherifate of Mecca and the Zaidi Imamate of Sanaa. It also recounts the Turkish and British attempts to dominate the region, especially the sea route to Asia through the Straits of Bab el Mandeb. The Ottoman Turkish presence in Yemen began in the early 16th century with the seizure of Aden and the Red Sea coast during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. However, after continued unrest in the interior, the Turks evacuated the region in 1630, leaving it in the hands of the Shiite Zaidi imams of Sanaa. Muhammad Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, established a presence in the region after he defeated the Wahhabis in Hejaz in the early 19th century. The Turks returned in 1849, establishing themselves in various cities and ports, where they remained until they surrendered to the British in 1918. Aden fell to the British in 1839. The Aden Protectorate was established at that time, and included the tribal kingdoms in the hinterland around the city that signed protection agreements with the British. The protectorate ceased to exist in 1963, and in 1967 the region declared independence and became known as the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), which united with the North in 1990 to form present-day Yemen.

Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of the Tarikh al-Mustabsir, written in the early quarter of the thirteenth century by Ibn al-Mujawir. The text is a fascinating account of the western and southern areas of the Arabian Peninsula by a man from the east of the Islamic world, probably from Khurasan in Iran. Ibn al-Mujawir was a man who in all probability followed the age-old Islamic practice of making the pilgrimage to Mecca and thereafter travelling in the area to further his business interests. His route began in Mecca and essentially ran south through the Red Sea coastal plain, Tihamah, down into the Yemen and along the southern coast of the peninsula. He paused long in Aden, where he observed closely the activities of the port to report at some length on its administration, its taxes, its markets, its currency, its weights and measures, and the like. His route then continued along the southern coast of Arabia into the Gulf, and he presumably returned home to the east via Iraq. The author is a wonderful observer of people: their buildings, their dress, their customs, their agriculture, their food and their history. This book is a unique source for the social and economic history of thirteenth-century south Arabia, written with a humour and wit otherwise unknown in the writings of medieval Islam. The text is of major linguistic importance too, written as it is in a far from classical Arabic. This translation is fully annotated with an introduction, appendices, glossary and full index, and contains maps and illustrations.

Book excerpt: The region of South Arabia (including the vast region of Hadhramaut) has been a part of the Yemen since 1990 due to a shot-gun marriage of an arrangement following the perestroika, leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the withdrawal of its protecting presence. Since then it has been in a regular state of ever-increasing political turmoil and instability. This is due to the United Nations' failure to implement its Resolutions concerning the region's political future prior to British withdrawal in 1967, with Southern Arabia's strategic location at the doorstep of the world's major oil resources and its constant insecurity adding fuel to fire, the latest case being the current crisis and the launch of Operation Decisive Storm in 2015. This study may be deemed authoritarian for the period it covers from many aspects due to the pen from which its authorship flows and the high and sensitive position held by its wielder at the time of the events it covers. It should certainly prove a revealing and illuminating eye-opener about the recent political history of a region that continues to suffer from grave paucity of material for the purpose of scholarship, and about which, regardless of its past greatness and current significance and strategic importance to the world at large, so little is known.
