Download or read book An Account of Ireland Vol 1 of 2 written by Edward Wakefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2: Statistical and Political To point out the advantages which England might derive from Ireland, were its interests better understood, and its energies properly encouraged by sound and well digested laws, is the principal object of the facts and observations collected 1n the following sheets. They were sought after for the purpose of supplying, with authentic materials and documents, those who may be disposed hereafter to turn their thoughts to this subject; and, I hope, however defective this work may be in style, that the matter will be found important, if not interesting. It is, indeed, generally ad mitted, that the situation of Ireland, so far from being known and appre ciated in Great Britain as it ought to be, and as it easily might be, is very imperfectly understood. Book Ireland in Official Print Culture 1800 1850

Download or read book Ireland in Official Print Culture 1800 1850 written by Niall Ó Ciosáin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades after 1800 saw a fundamental redefinition of the role of the state in Ireland. Many of the most pervasive and enduring forms of official intervention and regulation date from this period, such as a permanent centralised police force, a system of elementary education, a network of small courts, and a national system of poor relief. Many of these were preceded by large-scale official investigations whose results were published as parliamentary reports, another novel aspect of state activity. The book analyses the construction and dissemination of an official image of Irish society in those reports. It takes as its principal example a state inquiry into poverty: the largest social survey of Ireland: lasting from 1833 to 1836, running to thousands of pages, and offering a unique insight into pre-famine society and official perceptions of it. This volume also illuminates two other contemporary aspects of the development of the state. The 1820s saw the beginning in Ireland of a comprehensive engagement with the parliamentary process by the population at large, with the appearance of the first mass electoral organisation in Europe, the Catholic Association. Finally, the Union of 1801 meant that Irish legislation was now discussed and enacted in Britain rather than in Ireland, and by a parliament and public newly informed by official reports on Ireland. This was therefore a crucial period in the construction of the public understanding of Ireland in both Britain and Ireland, a process in which the state and its publications played a fundamental role.

Book The Laws and Other Legalities of Ireland 1689 1850

Download or read book The Laws and Other Legalities of Ireland 1689 1850 written by Dr Seán Patrick Donlan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the first to concentrate attention on the actual relationship that existed between the Irish population and the state under which they lived from the War of the Two Kings (1689–1691) and the Great Famine (1845–1849). Particular attention is paid to an understanding of the legal character of the state and the reach of the rule of law, addressing such themes as how law was made and put into effect; how ordinary people experienced the law and social regulations; and how Catholics related to the legal institutions of the Protestant confessional state. These themes will help to situate the study of Irish society into the mainstream of English and European social history.
