This causes dementia, movement problems, and essentially loss of personal identity. Amyloids attempts to answer the following questions: (1) why do we develop these severe neurodegenerative diseases? (2) what histological and physiological changes are observed upon development and progression of these diseases? and (3) how can we treat amyloid-associated diseases?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a gift from the international community of amyloid friends, presented to Professor Dr. Enno Mandema on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. It is the "precipitation" of up to date knowledge of amyloidosis, as presented at the International Course on Amyloidosis in Groningen, on the 10th and 11th of October 1986. Twenty years ago, Professor Mandema invited a group of scientists, who were studying the various aspects of amyloidosis from different points of view, to discuss their mutual interest in the subject. This "First International Symposium" was held for five days in September 1967. It was a wonderful experience for the participants, as most of them had until then only read each others work in the literature. The proceedings of that symposium, which contained the "lively" dis cussions, became a text-book for the following years. Research continued, and while the book was still in preparation, the revolutionary method of "water-soluble amyloid" was published. In the following years, different amyloid proteins were discovered and the mo lecular basis of the different amyloid syndromes was elucidated. The increase in knowledge parallelled the availability of modern, ingenious and also rapid methods in the biomedical sciences.

Book Alzheimer s Disease Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Amyloid beta

Download or read book Alzheimer s Disease Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Amyloid beta written by J. Robin Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major thrusts of present-day clinical research, strongly supported by more fimdamental cellular, biochemical, immunological and structural studies. It is these latter that receive attention within this book. This compilation of 20 chapters indicates the diversity of work currently in progress and summarizes the current state of knowledge. Experienced authors who are scientifically active in their fields of study have been selected as contributors to this book, in an attempt to present a reasonably complete survey of the field. Inevitably, some exciting topics for one reason or another have not been included, for which we can only apologize. Standardization of terminology is often a problem in science, not least in the Alzheimer field; editorial effort has been made to achieve standardization between the Chapters, but some minor yet acceptable personal / author variation is still present, i. e. P-amyloid/amyloid-P; Ap42/Apl-42/APi. 42! The book commences with a broad survey of the contribution that the range of available microscopical techniques has made to the study of Alzheimer's amyloid plaques and amyloid fibrillogenesis. This chapter also serves as an Introduction to the book, since several of the topics introduced here are expanded upon in later chapters. Also, it is significant to the presence of this chapter that the initial discovery of brain plaques, by Alois Alzheimer, utilized light microscopy, a technique that continues to be extremely valuable in present-day AD research.

Book Exploring New Findings on Amyloidosis

Download or read book Exploring New Findings on Amyloidosis written by Ana Maria Fernandez-Escamilla and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amyloid protein aggregates are involved in ''protein-misfolding diseases'' of enormous social and economic impact, still with no effective therapies. The most prevalent amyloid pathologies are related to neurodegenerative diseases, but amyloidosis also affects other organs. The majority of the studies includes serious health connotations on amyloids. However, not all amyloid fibers play a detrimental role in host. An increasing number of studies shows an important beneficial role as ''functional amyloids''. This book opens an exciting door to provide up-to-date information about the function and the mechanisms of the amyloid formation process from the structural, biophysical, biomedical, and nanotechnological perspective, combining the new findings on toxic and functional amyloids studies using theoretical and experimental approaches to fight against amyloid-based diseases.

Book Protein Aggregation and Fibrillogenesis in Cerebral and Systemic Amyloid Disease

Download or read book Protein Aggregation and Fibrillogenesis in Cerebral and Systemic Amyloid Disease written by J. Robin Harris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Subcellular Biochemistry series is the result of the long-standing research interest of the editor in the molecular mechanism underlying Alzheimer’s disease and other amyloid diseases, indicated also by the earlier book in the series (Volume 38), devoted to Alzheimer’s disease. The broad coverage within the present amyloidogenesis book represents an attempt to collate current knowledge relating to the proteins and peptides involved in most of the known amyloid diseases, together with some amyloid/fibril-forming proteins and peptides that are not involved in diseases. Thus, the range of topics included is comprehensive and furthermore it was thought appropriate to include both basic science and clinical presentation of the subjects under discussion.

Book Amyloidosis

  • Author : Svetlana Sarantseva
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2011-09-22
  • ISBN : 9533072539
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Amyloidosis written by Svetlana Sarantseva and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amyloidoses are a heterogeneous group of diverse etiology diseases. They are characterized by an endogenous production of abnormal proteins called amyloid proteins, which are not hydrosoluble, form depots in various organs and tissue of animals and humans and cause dysfunctions. Despite many decades of research, the origin of the pathogenesis and the molecular determinants involved in amyloid diseases has remained elusive. At present, there is not an effective treatment to prevent protein misfolding in these amyloid diseases. The aim of this book is to present an overview of different aspects of amyloidoses from basic mechanisms and diagnosis to latest advancements in treatment.
