Book excerpt: We analyze the decay B° → K+ ?− ?° with a sample of 454 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, and extract the complex amplitudes of seven interfering resonances over the Dalitz plot. These results are combined with amplitudes measured in B° → K°{sub s}?+?− decays to construct isospin amplitudes from B° → K{sup *}? and B° → ?K decays. We measure the phase of the isospin amplitude ?{sub 3/2}, useful in constraining the CKM unitarity triangle angle ? and evaluate a CP rate asymmetry sum rule sensitive to the presence of new physics operators. We measure direct CP violation in B° → K{sup *+}?− decays at the level of 3 ? when measurements from both B° → K+?−?° and B° → K°{sub s}?+?− decays are combined.

Book excerpt: We present the first results on the Dalitz-plot structure and improved measurements of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters of the process B° → K{sub S}°K{sub S}°K{sub S}° obtained using 468 x 106 B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. The Dalitz-plot structure is probed by a time-integrated amplitude analysis that does not distinguish between B° and {bar B}° decays. We measure the total inclusive branching fraction?(B° → K{sub S}°K{sub S}°K{sub S}°) = (6.19 ± 0.48 ± 0.15 ± 0.12) x 10−6, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third represents the Dalitz-plot signal model dependence. We also observe evidence for the intermediate resonant states f0(980), f0(1710), and f2(2010). Their respective product branching fractions are measured to be (2.70{sub -1.19}{sup +1.25} ± 0.36 ± 1.17) x 10−6, (0.50{sub -0.24}{sup +0.46} ± 0.04 ± 0.10) x 10−6, and (0.54{sub -0.20}{sup +0.21} ± 0.03 ± 0.52) x 10−6. Additionally, we determine the mixing-induced CP-violation parameters to be S = -0.94{sub -0.21}{sup +0.24} ± 0.06 and C = -0.17 ± 0.18 ± 0.04, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These values are in agreement with the standard model expectation.

Book excerpt: We perform an amplitude analysis of B{sup ±} 2!{var_phi}(1020)K*(892){sup ±} decay with a sample of about 384 million B{bar B} pairs recorded with the BABAR detector. Overall, twelve parameters are measured, including the fractions of longitudinal f{sub L} and parity-odd transverse f{sub {perpendicular}} amplitudes, branching fraction, strong phases, and six parameters sensitive to CP-violation. We use the dependence on the K[pi] invariant mass of the interference between the J{sup P} = 1− and 0 K[pi] components to resolve the discrete ambiguity in the determination of the strong and weak phases. Our measurements of f{sub L} = 0.49 ± 0.05 ± 0.03, f{sub {perpendicular}} = 0.21 {+-} 0.05 {+-} 0.02, and the strong phases point to the presence of a substantial helicity-plus amplitude from a presently unknown source.

Book excerpt: We report the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle? through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D meson decays to K{sub S}°??− and K{sub S}° K+K− produced in the processes B{sup {-+}} → DK{sup {-+}}, B{sup {-+}} → D* K{sup {-+}} with D* → D?°, D?, and B{sup {-+}} → DK*{sup {-+}} with K*{sup {-+}} → K{sub S}°?{sup {-+}}, using 468 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at SLAC. We measure? = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3){sup o} (modulo 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with? = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.

Book excerpt: We measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B° 2!KK−K° based on a data sample of approximately 227 million B-meson pairs recorded at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. We reconstruct two-body B° decays to [phi](1020)K{sub s}° and [phi](1020)K{sub L}°, and the three-body decay KK−K{sub s}° with [phi](1020)K{sub s}° excluded. For the B° 2![phi]K° decays, they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff}([phi]K°) = +0.50 ± 0.25(stat){sub -0.04}{sup +0.07}(syst). The B° 2!K+K−K{sub s}° decays are dominated by K+K− S-wave, as determined from an angular analysis; they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff} (K+K−K{sub s}°) = +0.55 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.04(syst) ± 0.11(CP), where the last error is due to the uncertainty in the fraction of CP-even contributions to the decay amplitude. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents studies of CP violation in the decays B0--> K+K-Ks, B+--> K+K-K+, and B+--> KsKsK+, using a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis. These studies are based on data from the BaBar experiment at PEP-II at SLAC. Among the significant results are the world's most precise measurements of time-dependent CP-violation in B0--> phi Ks and direct CP violation in B+--> phi K+. The latter is measured to deviate from zero by 2.8 standard deviations, in tension with the Standard Model expectation. We also study the resonant and nonresonant substructure of B--> KKK decays, and find evidence against the previously hypothesized resonance dubbed the "fX(1500)."

Using a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit, they measure sin2[beta]eff([Phi]K0) = 0.48 ± 0.28 ± 0.10, and C([Phi]K0) = 0.16 ± 0.25 ± 0.09, where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic. They also present measurements of the CP-violating asymmetries in the decay B0 2!f0(2![pi]+[pi]- )K$0\atop{S}$. The results are obtained from a data sample of 209 x 106 Y(4S) 2!B$\bar{B}$ decays, also collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit they measure the mixing-induced CP violation parameter S(f0(980)K$0\atop{S}$) = - sin 2[beta]efff0(980)K$0\atop{S}$ = -0.95$+0.32\atop{-0.23}$ ± 0.10 and the direct CP violation parameter C(f0(980)K$0\atop{S}$) = - 0.24 ± 0.31 ± 0.15, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Finally, they present a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0 2!f0(2![pi]+[pi]- )K$0\atop{S}$. From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit to a data sample of 123 x 106 Y(4S) 2!B$\bar{B}$ decays they find 93.6 ± 13.6 ± 6.4 signal events corresponding to a branching fraction of [beta](B0 2!f0(980)(2![pi]+[pi]- )K0) = (6.0 ± 0.9 ± 0.6 ± 1.2) x 10-6, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to model uncertainties.

Using 227 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B{bar B} decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy Ee− collider at SLAC, the authors observe a total signal yield of n(K-pi+) + n(K+pi−) = 1606 ± 51 decays and measure the asymmetry [n(K−pi+)-n(K+pi−)]/[n(K−pi+)+n(K+pi−)] = 0.133 ± 0.030(stat) ± 0.009(syst). This measurement establishes direct CP violation in the B° meson system at the level of 4.2 standard deviations.
