Excerpt: ...in the details of its organisation, essentially resembles the embryos of the higher types. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. We will now pass on to give a general interpretation of some of the principal phenomena which are presented to us in the development of Amphioxus. Larval Asymmetry. By far the most prominent feature of the fully formed larva is its astounding asymmetry, and it is extremely important, from a morphological point of view, to form a just conception of it. The phenomenon of asymmetry manifests itself in the larva of Amphioxus under several very different aspects, and is occasioned by various causes. For convenience we may classify the forms of asymmetry which we have to consider under three main divisions, according to the type of organs involved. 1. Median Asymmetry.--This relates to such structures as lie normally in the middle line, whether dorsal or ventral, but which have been mechanically or correlatively displaced from their primitive position by the differential growth of neighbouring parts. Such are the olfactory pit and neuropore, the anus, the mouth, and the endostyle. All these are essentially and primordially median and unpaired structures. We have already dealt with the neuropore and anus, while the mouth and endostyle will be considered below. 2. Bilateral Asymmetry.--This refers to the alternation of paired structures, such as myotomes, spinal nerves, gillslits, and gonads, which we have already noted in the adult organisation. Primarily the organ of one side lies opposite to its antimere of the other side. By a secondary displacement it comes to alternate with it. 3. Unilateral Asymmetry.--Next to the asymmetrical mouth, this is perhaps the most striking form of asymmetry which the larva of Amphioxus exhibits. It...

Book An Atlas of Comparative Vertebrate Histology

Download or read book An Atlas of Comparative Vertebrate Histology written by Donald B. McMillan and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of Comparative Vertebrate Histology looks at the histology of a wide range of vertebrates, representative of all the major classes and families, with examples ranging from amphioxus to primates. The authors focus their microscope on commonly seen vertebrates as well as ‘non-standard’ species, such as lamprey, hagfish, dogfish, skate, rock bass, cod, river catfish, toad, amphiuma, leopard and bull frog, garter and brown snake, Coturnix quail and cowbird. The study of comparative histology in the vertebrates helps students and researchers alike understand how various groups have addressed similar problems, opening doors to interesting research possibilities. Not all vertebrates follow the mammalian model of tissue and organ structure. When dealing with unique species, we see some structures taken beyond their ‘normal’ function. Comparative histology allows us to understand the structural responses underlying the physiology unique to each vertebrate group. Presents the histology of a wide range of vertebrates, representative of all the major classes and families, with examples ranging from amphioxus to primates Includes an image gallery with over 500 flat images and 50+ virtual microscopy slides Contains electronic content features cross linking between text, tables and the image gallery

Book Across the Bridge

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry Gee
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-07-04

Download or read book Across the Bridge written by Henry Gee and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Addresses an important topic for biologists and zoologists about vertebrates’ place in the ‘grand scheme’ . . . genuinely witty and charming . . . magnificent.” —Neil J. Gostling, University of Southampton Our understanding of vertebrate origins and the backbone of human history evolves with each new fossil find and DNA map. Many species have now had their genomes sequenced, and molecular techniques allow genetic inspection of even non-model organisms. But as longtime Nature editor Henry Gee argues in Across the Bridge, despite these giant strides and our deepening understanding of how vertebrates fit into the tree of life, the morphological chasm between vertebrates and invertebrates remains vast and enigmatic. As Gee shows, even as scientific advances have falsified a variety of theories linking these groups, the extant relatives of vertebrates are too few for effective genetic analysis. Moreover, the more we learn about the species that do remain—from sea-squirts to starfish—the clearer it becomes that they are too far evolved along their own courses to be of much use in reconstructing what the latest invertebrate ancestors of vertebrates looked like. Fossils present yet further problems of interpretation. Tracing both the fast-changing science that has helped illuminate the intricacies of vertebrate evolution as well as the limits of that science, Across the Bridge helps us to see how far the field has come in crossing the invertebrate-to-vertebrate divide—and how far we still have to go. “A beautiful ode to some of the least appreciated animals . . . guides the reader joyfully through deuterostomes—weaving disparate elements of embryology, paleontology, and morphology into an unprecedented and accessible narrative.” —Jakob Vinther, University of Bristol
