Download or read book Alien Reptiles and Amphibians written by Fred Kraus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation of species to areas outside their native ranges has been a feature of human culture for millennia. During this time such activities have largely been viewed as beneficial or inconsequential. However, it has become increasingly clear that human-caused introductions of alien biota are an ecological disruption whose consequences rival those of better-known insults like chemical pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Indeed, the irreversible nature of most alien-species int- ductions makes them less prone to correction than many other ecological problems. Current reshuffling of species ranges is so great that the present era has been referred to by some as the “Homogocene” in an effort to reflect the unique mag- tude of the changes being made. These alien interlopers often cause considerable ecological and economic d- age where introduced. Species extinctions, food-web disruptions, community alte- tions, ecosystem conversion, changes in nutrient cycling, fisheries collapse, watershed degradation, agricultural loss, building damage, and disease epidemics are among the destructive – and frequently unpredictable – ecological and economic effects that invasive alien species can inflict. The magnitude of these damages c- tinues to grow, with virtually all environments heavily used by humans now do- nated by alien species and many “natural” areas becoming increasingly prone to alien invasion as well. Attention to this problem has increased in the past decade or so, and efforts to prevent or limit further harm are gaining wider scientific and political acceptance.

Book The Eponym Dictionary of Amphibians

Download or read book The Eponym Dictionary of Amphibians written by Bo Beolens and published by Pelagic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New species of animal and plant are being discovered all the time. When this happens, the new species has to be given a scientific, Latin name in addition to any common, vernacular name. In either case the species may be named after a person, often the discoverer but sometimes an individual they wished to honour or perhaps were staying with at the time the discovery was made. Species names related to a person are ‘eponyms’. Many scientific names are allusive, esoteric and even humorous, so an eponym dictionary is a valuable resource for anyone, amateur or professional, who wants to decipher the meaning and glimpse the history of a species name. Sometimes a name refers not to a person but to a fictional character or mythological figure. The Forest Stubfoot Toad Atelopus farci is named after the FARC, a Colombian guerrilla army who found refuge in the toad’s habitat and thereby, it is claimed, protected it. Hoipollo's Bubble-nest Frog Pseudophilautus hoipolloi was named after the Greek for ‘the many’, but someone assumed the reference was to a Dr Hoipollo. Meanwhile, the man who has everything will never refuse an eponym: Sting's Treefrog Dendropsophus stingi is named after the rock musician, in honour of his ‘commitment and efforts to save the rainforest’. Following the success of their Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles, the authors have joined forces to give amphibians a similar treatment. They have tracked down 1,609 honoured individuals and composed for each a brief, pithy biography. In some cases these are a reminder of the courage of scientists whose dedicated research in remote locations exposed them to disease and even violent death. The eponym ensures that their memory will survive, aided by reference works such as this highly readable dictionary. Altogether 2,668 amphibians are listed.

Book Amphibians of Bukit Larut Forest Reserve Perak Peninsular Malaysia A Field Guide

Download or read book Amphibians of Bukit Larut Forest Reserve Perak Peninsular Malaysia A Field Guide written by Shahriza Shahriza Shahrudin and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 107 amphibian species belonged to seven families were recorded to inhabit the forests of Peninsular Malaysia. However, from time to time, many new species were found and described. These include two species of frog from genus Limnonectes (L. utara and L. selatan) and two species of frog from genus Amolops (A. gerutu and A.australis). From these findings, it showed that our forests are very rich with amphibian species. More potential areas, especially the upland systems need to be explored and studied extensively. Attention also needs to be given to cryptic species complex, which may consist of more than one species. This book is written to reveal and distribute the information on amphibian fauna of Bukit Larut Forest Reserve, Perak; the most popular biodiversity hotspot in Peninsular Malaysia. The information is based on our long-term study and survey of this area, starting in 2000–2018. Currently, 55 species of amphibians from seven families were recorded to inhabit Bukit Larut Forest Reserve. These include five species of bufonids, 10 dicroglossids, six megophrys, nine microhylids, 12 ranids, 11 rhacophorids and two ichthyopiids. The book also discusses the altitudinal range of the frog species which can be encountered at the lower part (< 300 m a.s.l.), upper part (> 900 m a.s.l.) and both lower and upper parts of Bukit Larut. This book also includes plentiful photos of amphibians which were photographed, mostly in their natural environments. It also includes the latest nomenclature, morphology, colouration and size, natural history, location and distribution of each frog species.
