Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wheelwright, a man too pure for the Puritans, founded Exeter in 1638. Resourceful, notorious and just plain unusual characters have populated the town ever since. Thinking inside the box, Albert and Lucy Tyler tried to ship themselves home to Exeter in a piano box after they ran out of funds on the West Coast. Albertus T. Dudley saved the town's founding document from the hands of William Randolph Hearst. Exeter has a paradoxical streak--it is an inland town with a working seaport, and it was both adamantly anti-abolition and home to the Free-Soil Party. Exeter Historical Society curator Barbara Rimkunas uncovers the lesser-known tidbits and gems hidden in the town's history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized as a series of walks through the distinct neighborhoods of Dartmouth College and parts of the surrounding town of Hanover, New Hampshire, The Campus Guide: Dartmouth College provides an intimate view of one of the most unique and picturesque Ivy League campuses. It contains a comprehensive illustration of today's campus and charts its historic evolution from a small school in the wilderness to the last college granted a Royal charter before the Revolution. Dartmouth College is architecturally distinguished by such unique features as its central Green, which dates from the days when the college considered itself a town in its own right. Comprised primarily of clean, classical, and simple buildings by turn-of-the-century architects like Jens Frederick Larson and Charles Alonzo Rich, Dartmouth’s campus also boasts impressive modern buildings by Gwathmey Siegel; Robert A.M; Stern, KieranTimberlake Associates; and Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. This extensively illustrated guide explores how these beautiful and historical buildings have helped to shape the Dartmouth identity. Author Scott Meacham explains the historically productive tension between the ideals of college and university and how it affects the scale and character of the campus, the ninth oldest in the U.S.

Book Japanese and Polish Managers

Download or read book Japanese and Polish Managers written by Sławomir Banaszak and published by V&R unipress. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is devoted to management in modern economies and the place and role of managers in contemporary societies. The contributors show the complex problems of managing organisations from the perspective of two countries: Japan and Poland. The comparison brings fascinating conclusions about the essence of management and economic, social and cultural capitals present in these seemingly distant two worlds. However, a more detailed analysis also shows similarities in the functioning of managers, modern leadership, the social role of a manager and the capitalist economy and post-capitalist society of Japan and Poland. The editors of this book have been cooperating for several years; they are trying to combine economic and sociological perspectives in research on contemporary capitalist economies and modern postcapitalist societies.

Book The Inception of Modern Professional Education

Download or read book The Inception of Modern Professional Education written by Bruce A. Kimball and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher C. Langdell (1826-1906) is one of the most influential figures in the history of American professional education. As dean of Harvard Law School from 1870 to 1895, he conceived, designed, and built the educational model that leading professional schools in virtually all fields subsequently emulated. In this first full-length biography of the educator and jurist, Bruce Kimball explores Langdell's controversial role in modern professional education and in jurisprudence. Langdell founded his model on the idea of academic meritocracy. According to this principle, scholastic achievement should determine one's merit in professional life. Despite fierce opposition from students, faculty, alumni, and legal professionals, he designed and instituted a formal system of innovative policies based on meritocracy. This system's components included the admission requirement of a bachelor's degree, the sequenced curriculum and its extension to three years, the hurdle of annual examinations for continuation and graduation, the independent career track for professional faculty, the transformation of the professional library into a scholarly resource, the inductive pedagogy of teaching from cases, the organization of alumni to support the school, and a new, highly successful financial strategy. Langdell's model was subsequently adopted by leading law schools, medical schools, business schools, and the schools of other professions. By the time of his retirement as dean at Harvard, Langdell's reforms had shaped the future model for professional education throughout the United States.

Book Made in Hong Kong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter E. Hamilton
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2021-01-05
  • ISBN : 0231545703
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Made in Hong Kong written by Peter E. Hamilton and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1949 and 1997, Hong Kong transformed from a struggling British colonial outpost into a global financial capital. Made in Hong Kong delivers a new narrative of this metamorphosis, revealing Hong Kong both as a critical engine in the expansion and remaking of postwar global capitalism and as the linchpin of Sino-U.S. trade since the 1970s. Peter E. Hamilton explores the role of an overlooked transnational Chinese elite who fled to Hong Kong amid war and revolution. Despite losing material possessions, these industrialists, bankers, academics, and other professionals retained crucial connections to the United States. They used these relationships to enmesh themselves and Hong Kong with the U.S. through commercial ties and higher education. By the 1960s, Hong Kong had become a manufacturing powerhouse supplying American consumers, and by the 1970s it was the world’s largest sender of foreign students to American colleges and universities. Hong Kong’s reorientation toward U.S. international leadership enabled its transplanted Chinese elites to benefit from expanding American influence in Asia and positioned them to act as shepherds to China’s reengagement with global capitalism. After China’s reforms accelerated under Deng Xiaoping, Hong Kong became a crucial node for China’s export-driven development, connecting Chinese labor with the U.S. market. Analyzing untapped archival sources from around the world, this book demonstrates why we cannot understand postwar globalization, China’s economic rise, or today’s Sino-U.S. trade relationship without centering Hong Kong.
