Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Juan de la Cruz, the great sixteenth-century Spanish mystic, is regarded by many as Spain's finest poet. Passionate, ecstatic, and spiritual, his poems are a blend of exquisite lyricism and profound mystical thought. In The Poems of St. John of the Cross John Frederick Nims presents his superlative translation of the complete poems, re-creating the religious fervor of St. John's art. This dual-language edition makes available the original Spanish from the Codex of Sanlúcon de Barrameda with facing English translations. The work concludes with two essays--a critique of the poetry and a short piece on the Spanish text that appears alongside the translation--as well as brief notes on the individual poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambivalent Desires: Representations of Modernity and Private Life in Colombia (1890s-1950s) is a literary and cultural study of the reception of modernity in Colombia. Unlike previous studies of Latin American modernization, which have usually focused on the public aspect of the process, this book discusses the intersection between modernity and the private sphere. It analyzes canonical and non-canonical works that reflect the existing ambivalence toward the modernizing project being implemented in the country at the time, and it discusses how the texts in question reinterpret, adapt, and even reject the ideology of modernity. The focus of the study is how the understanding of the relationship between modernity and private life relates to the project of constructing a modern nation, and the discontinuities and contradictions that appear in the process. The question of what modernity is, its implications for everyday life, and its desirability or undesirability as a new cultural paradigm were central issues in Colombian texts from the end of the nineteenth century through the first half of the twentieth. At stake was the definition of the nation's identity and the project of breaking away from the cultural patterns of the colonial past. Considering that the apparently peaceful process of modernization in Colombia was interrupted in the 1950s by the eruption of political violence across the country, this study situates itself on the eve of a crisis and asks how representations of modernity in texts from the period evidence the social fragmentation that may have led to it. The book begins with an analysis of the theme of the private collection in the work of JosZ Asunci-n Silva, and how it is used to propose a specific notion of personal and cultural identity. It continues with an analysis of the modernizing ideology of the popular magazine El GrOfico during the period of economic prosperity of the 1920s known as the 'Dance of the Millions,' focusing on the publication's advertisements and the section devoted to women and the home. Subsequently, the canonical writings of TomOs Rueda Vargas are analyzed in the context of the relation between autobiographical writing and public life, emphasizing the contradiction between the author's public liberalism and his private conservatism, and highlighting his critique of modern life. The works of previously neglected women writers Manuela Mallarino Isaacs, Juana SOnchez Lafaurie, and Fabiola Aguirre are studied in the context of women's relationship to modernity and their conflict between traditional roles that relegated them to the private sphere, and their desire to accept modern standards. The book concludes with an analysis of the novels of Ignacio G-mez DOvila, which have received scant attention to this date, as it discusses his critique of the upper classes' flight into the private and what the author sees as their alienation from a society on the verge of a crisis.

Book The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz

Download or read book The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz written by and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1578, during months of imprisonment for his reformist beliefs, San Juan de la Cruz composed a series of narrative poems inspired by the Biblical Song of Songs—and, the story goes, a popular love song overheard from his cramped cell—that take God as the beloved. Erotically charged, initially scandalous, his mystical poetry engages with the journey of the soul through the darkest trenches of suffering and despair toward an enlightened spiritual connection with God. For hundreds of years, these poems have resonated deeply with those who search for meaning in the dark, and have influenced generations of poets, artists, and philosophers. This bilingual edition of the Complete Poems—including “Dark Night” and both the Sanlúcar and Jaén manuscripts of “Spiritual Canticle”—presents an intimate and exceptionally collaborative new translation from María Baranda and Paul Hoover. Baranda, one of the most distinguished Mexican poets of her generation, lends her deft hand with expansive, meditative poetry. Hoover—the accomplished American poet, editor, and translator—offers his dexterity with form and the possibilities of language. The product is uniquely faithful to image and idea, and loyal to the ecstatic lyricism of this canonical text. A volume that hums with the soul’s longing to find solace, The Complete Poems of San Juan de la Cruz is a collection to be treasured.

  • Pages : 2702 pages

Download or read book La Ara a Negra written by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and published by LA CASE Books. This book was released on with total page 2702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book All Is Well written by Martha Triana and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Is Well is a compendium of life precepts towards living the meaningful life we are supposed to live as children of the universe. The writings are a reminder of some Bible statements and Jesus teachings to the ones who want to listen and are ready for it. Several poems exemplify the praxis of remaining aware in the moment to overcome daily issues. As harmonious food for the soul its uplifting poetry and some agreeable musicality provide time for remembering that which everyone already unconsciously knows. It is a recognition of the ideas of such authors as Anthony De Mello, who taught how to control the ups and downs to avoid discouragement; Eckhart Tolles concept of being conscious of everything that happens for us in our life; Esther and Jerry Hicks suggestion of living in the vortex to attract the best; Joel Goldsmiths persistence in acknowledging Gods presence within in communion, stillness and meditation; A Course in Miracles, which espouses seeing God in every one of us giving what we were given when we were created; Louise Hays teachings of loving, approving and honoring ourselves. All Is Well is an excellent present to uplift someone's heart. As my father's signature, this book encompasses broadly his positive philosophy of life. It is my inspired gift of love to the world for those wanting to live life as if in heaven now.
