Book excerpt: This is a study of the forces which brought about a change in the status and position of the Muslims of Punjab during the British rule of the province, from 1849, up to its independence in 1947. It examines the role of the government, reformers and political leaders in bringing about a transformation in their position. It is a useful study for understanding the predicament of the modern day South Asian Muslim women, who sometimes emerge in powerful political positions in an otherwise conservative society.

Book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict

Download or read book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict written by Mallika Kaur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punjab was the arena of one of the first major armed conflicts of post-colonial India. During its deadliest decade, as many as 250,000 people were killed. This book makes an urgent intervention in the history of the conflict, which to date has been characterized by a fixation on sensational violence—or ignored altogether. Mallika Kaur unearths the stories of three people who found themselves at the center of Punjab’s human rights movement: Baljit Kaur, who armed herself with a video camera to record essential evidence of the conflict; Justice Ajit Singh Bains, who became a beloved “people’s judge”; and Inderjit Singh Jaijee, who returned to Punjab to document abuses even as other elites were fleeing. Together, they are credited with saving countless lives. Braiding oral histories, personal snapshots, and primary documents recovered from at-risk archives, Kaur shows that when entire conflicts are marginalized, we miss essential stories: stories of faith, feminist action, and the power of citizen-activists.

Book Overcome and Become Portraits in Words of Five Heroic Punjabi Women

Download or read book Overcome and Become Portraits in Words of Five Heroic Punjabi Women written by Preet Inder Dhillon and published by White Falcon Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, there were five little girls who believed in themselves and in the women they wanted to be. One fine day they stood gazing at the fragmented remains of their wings smashed by the patriarchal society. Calmly they observed the broken, blurry pieces that silently glittered on the ground. And yet they felt so proud of their reflections and shadows that smiled back at them. The society by all means could chop off their wings but their spirits were indomitable. And though these women with a spine of steel, at times could be broken, but could never be defeated. They rose unfettered, unbeaten, unimpeded. "Overcome And Become" is the story of those five resilient, remarkable extraordinary, gritty, daring (S)Heroes from Punjab. It's a saga of confidence, courage and compassion. It's a tribute and salute to the Daughters of Punjab - Surinder Kaur, Amrita Pritam, Dr. Kiran Bedi, Dr. Inderjit Kaur and last but not the least, Amrita Shergil. There is something these inspirational women all share in common: they are all warriors and continue to inspire us in our own modern lives. Preet has a magical flow in her writing, may it be the expression of fondness, regard or the pain of losing her subject. I was extremely touched by her superior usage of simple, effective and appropriate language. I am so sure that all readers when they go through this piece of art, they'll shower their blessings upon her. - DOLLY GULERIA As I finished reading "Overcome And Become" I feel nostalgic. I wanted to keep reading more and more about the gritty, phenomenal, inspiring women. Well done Preet!! Each word penned by you has come straight from your heart and reached where it should, deep within the hearts of the readers. In a surreal way again I feel you have wrapped all the women of Punjab in that beautiful dupatta I wore..... - DIVYA DUTTA (from the foreword)

Book Are Pakistan s Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector

Download or read book Are Pakistan s Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector written by Aban Haq and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fostering the entrepreneurship of women is important for Pakistan's economic growth and inclusion agenda, and access to financial services is an important component of starting and growing a business for women entrepreneurs. The original purpose of Are Pakistan's Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector? was to determine whether women entrepreneurs have access to, and are using, microfinance loans as a source of finance for their businesses. However, the findings of the book go beyond the narrow objective of understanding whether microfinance providers are reaching Pakistan's businesswomen. As the research unfolded, the evidence suggested that not only are women entrepreneurs not being served, but also most of the loans for women clients are actually being used by a male family member-a brother, a son, a husband, a father. Actual numbers are hard to pin down, but an estimated 50 to 70 percent of the loans on the books for women clients are solely used by another household member, while the woman 'borrower' is responsible for attending all the group meetings, all repayments or delinquencies, and all the transactions costs. This book focuses on products, services, policies, and other elements of the business model of microfinance in Pakistan that affect both demand for and access to microfinance by women borrowers, some of whom fall into the narrower category of entrepreneurs. Financial services are important for women who are starting and growing a business, but in Pakistan microfinance providers are not reaching the country's businesswomen. Most loans made to women borrowers are passed on to male relatives, many loan products for women are not suitable for small businesses, and discriminatory practices are pervasive. The information presented in Are Pakistan's Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector? will be useful to development practitioners, entrepreneurs, policy makers, businesswomen, and students of microfinance in Pakistan and around the world.

Book excerpt: "We will fight here," I commanded the warriors. "We are strong. We will have no fear. As Sikh warriors, we are ready to fight for justice. Vahiguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Vahiguru Ji Ki Fateh!" It is the winter of 1705, and the tenth Guru of the Sikhs is under attack by the armies of the mighty Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Under siege and isolated, Guru Gobind Singh Ji's men are exhausted beyond measure, and forty soldiers decide to head home. Back in the villages of Punjab, these forty men are met by a fiery Sikh woman-a warrior who has been preparing all her life for this very moment-who leads the deserters back to the Guru. This is the story of that warrior, the fierce Mai Bhago, who chose the sword to symbolize her unwavering loyalty and devotion to her people and her faith. This energetic coming-of-age young adult novel brings us closer to Mai Bhago-a woman revered in the Sikh community and beyond-to imagine her growing to embrace her many roles in a way that was entirely her own and, in the process, becoming a shining inspiration for young women everywhere.
