"If you want to make your escape from that Dutchman, ye'd better be stirring yer stumps. It's sunup and me gallant ship sails in a few minutes." Thus begins the adventure of young Jonathan Ogden as he is forced to flee the rough treatment to which he is subjected on a Pennsylvania farm where he was "bound out" following the untimely death of his parents. To make matters worse, he must leave behind his dear twin sister, Phoebe, who has been taken in by a Quaker family. His mind filled with stories of George Washington and the Revolution, told to him by his grandfather on winter evenings in the kitchen of his old home, Jonathan sets sail with his new friend and unlikely benefactor, Patrick Ambrose Barney. He soon finds himself in the path of the seemingly invincible sea-power of Great Britain, somehow ending up in a heroic battle on "Old Ironsides." However, the greatest battle will be fought in the lessons Jonathan learns about loyalty, patriotism and friendship in early America. Join Jonathan and Phoebe on a nautical adventure in The American Twins of 1812, by Lucy Fitch Perkins and experience history through the eyes of a brother and sister in one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1906, Perkins published her first work, The Goose Girl, a collection of children's rhymes. A year later, she followed with A Book of Joys: A Story of a New England Summer, but both works had limited popular appeal. In 1911, she published The Dutch Twins, her first major work. The book was inspired by friend Edwin Osgood Grover, who saw a picture Perkins drew of a pair of Dutch children. Grover suggested to Perkins that she design a series centered around the twins. Perkins took the advice, and the Twins series were a popular success. She published twenty-six books in the Twins series for the Houghton Mifflin Company. For each book, Perkins would try to interview an individual who grew up in the given country to gain an understanding of the particular customs. Later books in the series, such as The American Twins of the Revolution, supplanted history for geography as the basis of the twins' backgrounds.

Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, Britons and Americans renewed their struggle over the legacy of the American Revolution, leading to a second confrontation that redefined North America. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Alan Taylor’s vivid narrative tells the riveting story of the soldiers, immigrants, settlers, and Indians who fought to determine the fate of a continent. Would revolutionary republicanism sweep the British from Canada? Or would the British contain, divide, and ruin the shaky republic? In a world of double identities, slippery allegiances, and porous boundaries, the leaders of the republic and of the empire struggled to control their own diverse peoples. The border divided Americans—former Loyalists and Patriots—who fought on both sides in the new war, as did native peoples defending their homelands. And dissident Americans flirted with secession while aiding the British as smugglers and spies. During the war, both sides struggled to sustain armies in a northern land of immense forests, vast lakes, and stark seasonal swings in the weather. After fighting each other to a standstill, the Americans and the British concluded that they could safely share the continent along a border that favored the United States at the expense of Canadians and Indians. Moving beyond national histories to examine the lives of common men and women, The Civil War of 1812 reveals an often brutal (sometimes comic) war and illuminates the tangled origins of the United States and Canada. Book excerpt: During the War of 1812, or the "second war of independence," the United States, which consisted of eighteen loosely joined states, took on Great Britain, the greatest naval power in the world, in a conflict that would have a lasting impact on the nation's future. The causes of the war, which have been debated for more than two centuries, include the British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy's impressment of American seamen, and the United States' desire to expand her territory. Over the course of the war, the U.S. suffered many costly defeats at the hands of British, Canadian, and Native American forces, including the burning of the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Nonetheless, American troops managed to thwart British invasions in Baltimore, New York, and New Orleans, boosting national confidence and fostering a new spirit of patriotism as a result. Though the War of 1812 resulted in no exchange of territory between nations, there was no longer any doubt that the United States was now a nation to be reckoned with on the world stage. Read about this tumultuous period in American history by purchasing the book "America's Second War of Independence." 30-Minute Book Series Welcome to the 29th book in the 30-Minute Book Series.
