Book Beyond the Crisis in US American Studies

Download or read book Beyond the Crisis in US American Studies written by David E. Nye and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume celebrates the 40th anniversary of the journal American Studies in Scandinavia, which began publication in 1967. The first of a series of books that will bring together the distinctive scholarship of the Nordic Association for American Studies, it situates Scandinavian practices in relation to American Studies debates inside the US, where for a decade scholars argued about the shape and subject matter of the field. Is this a crisis in American Studies as a whole? Or is the problem largely confined to the United States? How is this interdisciplinary activity different in a Scandinavian context? These questions ultimately are about the field's direction and international coherence." "Beyond the crisis in US American Studies is an invitation to develop a dialogue across the Atlantic. For too long European scholars have watched Americanists in the United States as though looking through a one-way window, invisible to those arguing on the other side of the glass. For too long US Americanists have scarcely realized that what appeared a mirror could be a window."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Nordic Theory of Everything

Download or read book The Nordic Theory of Everything written by Anu Partanen and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Finnish journalist, now a naturalized American citizen, asks Americans to draw on elements of the Nordic way of life to nurture a fairer, happier, more secure, and less stressful society for themselves and their children Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life—from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare—was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first, she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension. To understand why life is so different in the U.S. and Finland, Partanen began to look closely at both. In The Nordic Theory of Everything, Partanen compares and contrasts life in the United States with life in the Nordic region, focusing on four key relationships—parents and children, men and women, employees and employers, and government and citizens. She debunks criticism that Nordic countries are socialist “nanny states,” revealing instead that it is we Americans who are far more enmeshed in unhealthy dependencies than we realize. As Partanen explains step by step, the Nordic approach allows citizens to enjoy more individual freedom and independence than we do. Partanen wants to open Americans’ eyes to how much better things can be—to show her beloved new country what it can learn from her homeland to reinvigorate and fulfill the promise of the American dream—to provide the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, economically secure, upwardly mobile life for everyone. Offering insights, advice, and solutions, The Nordic Theory of Everything makes a convincing argument that we can rebuild our society, rekindle our optimism, and restore true freedom to our relationships and lives.

Book English in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book English in the Nordic Countries written by Elizabeth Peterson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in the Nordic states – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland – rank as among the most proficient speakers of English in the world. In this unique volume, international experts explore how this came to be, what English usage and integration looks like in different spheres of society and the economy in these countries, and the implications of this linguistic phenomenon for language attitudes and identity, for the region at large, and for English in Europe and around the world. Led by Elizabeth Peterson and Kristy Beers Fägersten, contributors provide a historical overview to the subject, synthesize the latest research, illustrate the roles of English with original case studies from diverse communities and everyday settings, and offer transnational insights critically and in conversation with the situation in other Nordic states. This comprehensive text is the first book of its kind and will be of interest to advanced students and researchers of World/Global Englishes and English as a lingua franca, language contact and dialect studies/language varieties, language policy, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and Nordic/Scandinavian and European studies.

Book The Nordic States and European Unity

Download or read book The Nordic States and European Unity written by Christine Ingebritsen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of European unity, which the Nordic states have historically resisted, has recently become the foremost concern of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland. Christine Ingebritsen provides a timely analysis of Nordic economic and security policies in the wake of the vast transformation of regional politics between 1985 and 1995. The Nordic States and European Unity addresses two central questions: Why did all five Nordic states trade autonomy for integration after 1985? And why do some follow the British pattern, resisting supranationalism, while others prefer the German strategy of embedding their policies in a common European project?Through extensive interviews with representatives of trade unions, government ministries, parliamentary committees, social movements, and military and industrial organizations, Ingebritsen charts adjustments to the idea of a regional system of governance. She highlights crucial differences among these nations as they seek to protect their borders against new security threats. In particular, Ingebritsen shows how the political influence of leading sectors affects each state's capacity to pursue an integrationist policy. Economic sectors are not uniformly affected by European policy coordination, and the experience of the Nordic states demonstrates this difference. Her work shifts the focus of political economics away from enduring, domestic institutions toward an understanding of institutions as sectoral and transnational.

Book Higher Education in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Higher Education in the Nordic Countries written by and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries have a lot in common. We share the same values and culture in education, and vulnerable subjects face many of the same challenges across the Region. This makes it advantageous for us to work together on enhancing Nordic competencies and competitiveness and to generate Nordic added value by working together on these vulnerable subject areas. A Nordic approach will generate synergies that would not be possible to achieve at national level. Nordic work on Collaboration, Specialisation and Concentration (CSC) can help overcome the challenges faced by vulnerable study programmes all over the Region. From this starting point, the study looks at how work on CSC can help maintain sustainable, high-quality study programmes throughout the Nordic Region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by participants in the Fulbright Educational Exchange program provides convincing evidence that the transnational educational experience is an efficient and effective way to change the attitudes of people toward others with different customs, religion, and political systems. The book conveys the variegated flavor of the Fulbright experience and the effects of studying, teaching, and undertaking research in other countries. The authors present a set of remarkable testimonials of personal growth and career restructuring. Richard Arndt, Robin Winks, Peter I. Rose, Otto N. Larsen, Ray Marshall, Irving Louis Horowitz, and more than forty others present revealing insights. We learn first hand of culture shock, of developing understanding across cultural boundaries, of teaching and learning about disciplinary assumptions, and of breaking intellectual ground. The book is a fascinating account of a successful program that tightens the bonds of affection and understanding between peoples of differing cultures.

Book Viking Economics

Download or read book Viking Economics written by George Lakey and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberals worldwide invoke Scandinavia as a promised land of equality, while most conservatives fear it as a hotbed of liberty-threatening socialism. But the left and right can usually agree on one thing: that the Nordic system is impossible to replicate elsewhere. The US and UK are too big, or too individualistic, or too . . . something. In Viking Economics—perhaps the most fun economics book you’ve ever read—George Lakey dispels these myths. He explores the inner-workings of the Nordic economies that boast the world’s happiest, most productive workers, and explains how, if we can enact some of the changes the Scandinavians fought for surprisingly recently, we, too, can embrace equality in our economic policy.

Book Promoting Canadian Studies Abroad

Download or read book Promoting Canadian Studies Abroad written by Stephen Brooks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the history and current state of Canadian studies in a number of countries and regions across the world, including Canada's major trading partners. From the mid-1980s until 2012, Canadian studies was seen as an important tool of soft power, increasing awareness of Canadian culture, institutions and history. The abrupt termination in 2012 of the Canadian government's financial support for these activities triggered a debate that is still ongoing about the benefits that may have flowed from this support and whether the decision should be reversed. The contributors to this book focus on the process whereby Canadian studies became institutionalized in their respective countries and on the balance between what might be described as Canadian studies for its own sake versus Canadian studies as a deliberate instrument of cultural diplomacy.
