Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Philology, Vol. 28 In this age of the "so-called" in Latin syntax, even so universal a category as the unreal conditional sentence has been questioned from time to time, and lately by Methner, who tries to show that there is no such thing as the present unreal. The weakness of this thesis has already been pointed out by Blase, whose argument might have been rendered even more cogent by carrying the question back to Plautus, taking such an example as the following: St. 592-93: EP. Edepol te vocem lubenter, si superfiat locus. GE. Quin tum stans obstrusero aliquid strenue. In this passage the reply shows beyond the shadow of a doubt that the conditional sentence was understood not as a future ("if there should prove to be a place to spare"), but as a present unreal ("if there were a place to spare"). The former interpretation would hold out hope of a dinner, the other cuts it off definitely and calls forth Gelasimus' eager suggestion. Such a passage shows conclusively that the present unreal was an established category in the Roman mind at least as early as Plautus. Book The Journal of Philology Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Journal of Philology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by W. G. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Philology, Vol. 1 There is a mystery about the Unseen that takes equally strong hold of the cultivated and the untutored mind: but in the former it is subjected to reason and faith in all-controlling Provi dence, in the latter it degenerates into pure unreasoning dread. Even children who have never been wantonly frightened are apt to fear the dark. There is but too much reason to believe, that the earliest notions of worship in the human race were dictated by fear rather than by love. If we follow the analogy of our own times, we can hardly doubt that the grovelling races who in very remote ages lived in caves and made flint or bone implements, had no exalted ideas of a beneficent Creator. To worship and obey are higher efforts than to fear and to bribe. Hence the propitiation of malignant powers rather than the adoration of a Supreme Good seems to have formed the basis of the early religions of the world. It is certain that even element-worship, although, coming as it did from the Persians and Medians, both highly gifted families, it had some grand conceptions, had also its dark side, and dealt largely with the powers supposed to reside under the earth'. A right understanding of this subject is by no means unimportant to the correct appreciation of the mind of the Greek and Roman poets. It is a very extensive subject; but I hope to give such a sketch of it in brief as will be useful to those who have not directed their attention specially to it. Book The American Journal of Philology 1883 Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Journal of Philology 1883 Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Philology, 1883, Vol. 4 Such was the Italian, such above all was Vergil's conception of the part that color, as distinguished from pure light, plays in the beauty of the universe. For him it was color that made the glory of life; it was the withdrawing of color that made the dreadfulness of the dead man's world. For him, however, this separation of color from light, this glorification of color at the expense of light, was accomplished only by the stress of a grand imagination. But for us, strange to say, we can find in the resources of modern chemistry the means of changing Vergil's imagination into scientific fact; we can separate light from color, and light up a dismal world of horrors from which all color is banished. We can see before us in the laboratory the very scene that Vergil makes Aeneas behold as he goes down alive in Hell. The process and the result of this wonderful experiment are well described in Rood's Modern Chro matics, pp. 102-3. From the witnessing of such an experiment we shall come forth persuaded for ever of the fundamental truth of Vergil's conception: the glory of the physical universe consists, above all, in the diffu sion of color; and the poetic conception and the presentation of life before the sensuous imagination are to be attained in their highest effects only by the management and utilization of color.
