This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

No foreigner has ever exhibited such a deep, clear, and correct insight of the machinery of our complicated systems of federal and state governments. The most intelligent Europeans are confounded with our _imperium in imperio_; and their constant wonder is, that these systems are not continually jostling each other. M. DE TOCQUEVILLE has clearly perceived, and traced correctly and distinctly, the orbits in which they move, and has described, or rather defined, our federal government, with an accurate precision, unsurpassed even by an American pen. There is no citizen of this country who will not derive instruction from our author's account of our national government, or, at least, who will not find his own ideas systematised, and rendered more fixed and precise, by the perusal of that account.Among other subjects discussed by the author, that of the political influence of the institution of trial by jury, is one of the most curious and interesting. He has certainly presented it in a light e

Book excerpt: American Institutions by Alexis De Tocqueville has attracted great attention throughout Europe, where it is universally regarded as a sound, philosophical, impartial, and remarkably clear and distinct view of our political institutions, and of our manners, opinions, and habits, as influencing or influenced by those institutions. Writers, reviewers, and statesmen of all parties, have united in the highest commendations of its ability and integrity. The people, described by a work of such a character, should not be the only one in Christendom unacquainted with its contents. At least, so thought many of our most distinguished men, who have urged the publishers of this edition to reprint the work, and present it to the American public. They have done so in the hope of promoting among their countrymen a more thorough knowledge of their frames of government, and a more just appreciation of the great principles on which they are founded.

This edition was translated by Henry Reeve and published in 1851. The work is a socio-political portrait of American and its constitution, perhaps the best known image of the country by a foreigner. It maps with a clear vision, the elementary forces working beneath the surface of history and society, to produce what has been considered by many a stunningly accurate analysis.

Book excerpt: Reader, in this volume we compiled the most outstanding works of the famed writer Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859). A historian and statesman, de Tocqueville’s foundational work, Democracy in America (1835, 1840) featured an educated, novel analysis of the state-political structure and spiritual life of the United States of America. The book uses a complex fusion of travel notes, research, philosophical essays, and journalism to describe the birth of the American Nation, which literally transformed before his eyes from a frontier on the “edge of civilization” to a New World power impacting European politics. His 1856 book, The Old Regime and the Revolution, examined the period of the French Revolution. In trying to flesh out its origins, de Tocqueville found that the old order that existed prior to the revolution had been all but forgotten. He had to delve into the archives and reconstruct the image of “old” France. Without a proper understanding of the interplay between the aristocrats and bourgeois, it was impossible to explain why the Revolution took place and why it played out as it did. His book not only shed light on the French revolution, it also created a new scientific method for studying the origins and character of a revolt.
