Book The Myth of American Individualism

Download or read book The Myth of American Individualism written by Barry Alan Shain and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharpening the debate over the values that formed America's founding political philosophy, Barry Alan Shain challenges us to reconsider what early Americans meant when they used such basic political concepts as the public good, liberty, and slavery. We have too readily assumed, he argues, that eighteenth-century Americans understood these and other terms in an individualistic manner. However, by exploring how these core elements of their political thought were employed in Revolutionary-era sermons, public documents, newspaper editorials, and political pamphlets, Shain reveals a very different understanding--one based on a reformed Protestant communalism. In this context, individual liberty was the freedom to order one's life in accord with the demanding ethical standards found in Scripture and confirmed by reason. This was in keeping with Americans' widespread acceptance of original sin and the related assumption that a well-lived life was only possible in a tightly knit, intrusive community made up of families, congregations, and local government bodies. Shain concludes that Revolutionary-era Americans defended a Protestant communal vision of human flourishing that stands in stark opposition to contemporary liberal individualism. This overlooked component of the American political inheritance, he further suggests, demands examination because it alters the historical ground upon which contemporary political alternatives often seek legitimation, and it facilitates our understanding of much of American history and of the foundational language still used in authoritative political documents.

He is the material out Of which the superstructure Of civilization is reared. This little human dynamo is the source Of the power in which the world takes pride. While our education, our religion, our social reform have become mass plays, it should be understood that political, religious, or social organizations will not in themselves redeem the human mind from error nor establish happiness among mankind. The world cannot be redeemed by formula; men may not be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Individualism in the United States

Download or read book Individualism in the United States written by Stephanie M. Walls and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many ideas that inspired and shaped the American Founding Fathers' thought, individualism and a commitment to individual rights were primary among them. The American emphasis on the individual in politics and society and the protection he receives in the US Constitution established the United States as an ideological trailblazer in this regard. However the individualism that inspired the Founders, has transformed over time to reflect the changing economic and social landscape in the United States. Individualism in the United States provides a comprehensive introduction to the idea of individualism in American political development, and a well-grounded argument about the social and political implications of our current understanding of this alleged ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Individualism: A System of Politics The range of subjects dealt with in the present volume is doubtless a wide one; but it will be found, I trust, that all have been treated consistently from what may be called the individualist standpoint. The merit of formulating this theory of government, and thus of laying the rough foundations upon which a sound art of Politics may be based, undoubtedly belongs to Mr. Herbert Spencer, who has contributed more to the scientific study of society than any other thinker - not even excepting Auguste Comte or John Austin. It is therefore with the greater regret that I find myself unable to accept either the principles or the conclusions set forth in Mr. Spencer's most popular publication on the subject - The Alan the State. Though this in no way lessens the great debt of gratitude which all seekers after truth in this field owe to him. And for myself I take this opportunity of acknowledging it. Book A Catechism of Individualism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Catechism of Individualism Classic Reprint written by Henry Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism of Individualism They do, but it is a pure delusion. Organised means arranged like an organism. The human body is an organism. In it digestion, assimilation, nutrition, and expulsion of waste - processes which correspond to the feeding, clothing, travelling, and other activities of society - go on normally not only without the interference of the brain, which is the government, but without its knowledge. If, then, the five millions in London get without fail daily their milk, bread, papers, and everything they want without the interference of government, society in London is organised. Also in a free society government is carried on by certain units elected by the others for a definite and limited purpose. The cells of the brain are not elected by the cells of the bones and muscles. In a society the life of the units is higher and more varied than that of the whole, in an organism it is just the reverse. But Socialists say that production is now carried on in the interest and for the profit of the class that owns the means of production. Anyone can see the falsity of that statement. There are producers in my village who own neither land, house, nor factory, nor anything but such tools as they have bought with their savings as wage earners. The mightiest busi nesses have all had a similar origin. Then there is no such class as the Socialists speak of, bound together by a common interest against the rest of society? Book Absolutism and Individuality in Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Absolutism and Individuality in Education Classic Reprint written by Andrew Fuller Craven and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Absolutism and Individuality in Education This is the concluding one of a series of studies which I have made, tracing and setting out in contrast or antithesis, the history of absolutism or compulsion, and of individualism or freedom in systems of education. I began with ancient Greece, and traced these two principles through the channels in which they have come down to us. I have not dealt with theories further than has seemed essential to an understanding of systems of education that have had an actual existence and a history. I shall try to set forth clearly these principles as they exist at the present time in our American education, and shall conclude with an expression of opinion as to their proper relation, their mutual and counteracting influence in a well-ordered and progressive State.
