Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Hero Stories This volume contains five accounts of voyagers and explorers, ranging from Columbus to Lewis and Clark; stories of five colonies of marked dissimilarity- Virginia, Quebec, Plymouth, New York, and Philadelphia; brief lives of four pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and fifteen short stories of war times. In treating of our wars, it seemed wisest not to attempt any formal explanation of causes and results, but rather to picture a number of separate and interesting achievements, choosing as far as possible actions that have distinct heroes. The chapters are arranged in chronological order, with a thread of continuity running through them. The aim of the book is to introduce in informal and friendly fashion some of the makers of American history, and to provide a simple, broad foundation for future study of history and biography. Acknowledgments are due to the courtesy of the following for permission to use their material for illustrations; to The Title Guarantee and Trust Co. of New York for New Amsterdam in Stuyvesant's Time; to Mr. C.M. Barton, President of the Historical Society of Michigan, for Gladwyn's Warning from the Indian Girl; to Mr. Charles E.Goodspeed for Washington at the Delaware; to McClure's Magazine for portrait of Daniel Boone; to the New England Magazine for The Indian Woman who Guided Lewis and Clark and the Seal of the Lewis and Clark Exposition; to The Outing Magazine for The Marriage and The March of David Crockett. Book Hero Stories From American History

Download or read book Hero Stories From American History written by Albert F. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Stories From American History: For Elementary Schools This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth and seventh grades of our public schools, or for any other pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on American history. The period here included is the first fifty years of our national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a birds-eye view, of this half century. It is the universal testimony of experienced teachers that such materials as are pervaded with reality serve a useful purpose with young pupils. The reason is plain. Historical matter that is instinct with human life attracts and holds the attention of boys and girls, and whets their desire to know more of the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating of notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most schoolbooks. Free use has been made of personal incidents and anecdotes, which thrill us because of their human element, and smack of the picturesque life of our forefathers. It has seemed advisable to arrange the subjects in chronological order. As the various chapters have appeared in proof, they have been put to a practical test in the sixth grade in several grammar schools. Book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales From American History After we had chosen our subjects we decided to prefix a motto, a fitting quotation, to each one of them. We were not unmindful of Addison's delightful essay on Mottoes and Signatures, which was itself prefaced by the familiar words Of Horace Ab ovo usque ad mala, or of the fact that a quotation from some Greek or Latin poet was at the beginning of each one of the Tatlers and Spectators. We were inclined to agree with Addison when he remarks: It was a saying of an ancient philosopher, that a good face is a letter of recommendation. It naturally makes the beholders inquisitive into the person who is the owner Of it, and generally prepossesses them in his favor. A handsome motto has the same effect. What influenced us still more I think was the fact that we were both habitual readers and genuine lovers of Scott and re joiced in the mottoes which he usually placed at the be ginning Of each chapter in his novels. In this exercise Scott had a peculiar charm, for apart from the ready fruits Of his wide reading, not only in accepted literature but in odd and out-of-the-way literary corners and by ways, whenever he was at a loss for an apt quotation he made one himself, attributing it to Old Play. That this ideal has been reached, however, to any great extent, cannot be successfully claimed. Educators hitherto have confined their attention chiefly to the mental side of instruction. Book America s Great Men and Their Deeds

Download or read book America s Great Men and Their Deeds written by William A. Mowry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Great Men and Their Deeds: American Heroes and Heroism "Interest" is the first word in modern psychology. The child will learn faster and better when he is "interested," when his mind is thoroughly alive and intensely active. Moreover, when he is kept in pleasurable interest his development is more normal and healthy. Nowhere is this principle more applicable or the results more manifest than in the reading-classes. Give the children dry and uninteresting historical facts or didactic rules of no interest to them and quite foreign to their undeveloped natures, and you have given them a soporific potion which will prove effectual in retarding their advancement. On the other hand, give them reading-lessons which relate, in simple language, adventures, narrow escapes, thrilling incidents in history and travel, where bold and high-toned courage is manifested, and three distinct and important things will be accomplished: first, their thorough interest in the reading exercise will be secured; secondly, a healthy love for history will be cultivated; and thirdly, a strong moral sentiment will be stimulated. Perhaps no set of reading-lessons will do more in all three of these directions than such entertaining incidents in history as show real bravery and high-principled heroism. One advantage from a book of this sort is found in the ethical lessons conveyed by the incidents related. It is in reality a practical book of morals. The best moral teaching is by example, and the stories here told impart so clearly lessons in kindness, in honesty, in true courage, in real benevolence, that the words haec fabula docet are in no way needed. Children always and everywhere respect heroism and love the hero. But it is important to distinguish between brute bravery and real moral courage. The incidents of heroism given in this book are arranged in a progressive or ascending order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
