Book American Episodes Involving Charles Dickens

Download or read book American Episodes Involving Charles Dickens written by Sidney P. Moss and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Charles Dickens has become a household name in America, familiar even to those who have never read his books, it is important to remember that he wrote primarily for an English audience. As a result, Dickens scholarship has been dominated by English scholars, who have largely left his relationship with America and Americans unexplored. Sidney and Carolyn Moss have stepped in to fill the resulting gap with Charles Dickens and His Chicago Relatives, The Charles Dickens -- Thomas Powell Vendetta, and American Episodes Involving Charles Dickens, their new book of essays that focuses on Dickens' two visits to America. The Mosses explore Dickens' effect on the American literary scene, and the effect that American culture had on him, and bring to light entertaining but forgotten stories about his trips.

Book Literary Dollars and Social Sense

Download or read book Literary Dollars and Social Sense written by Ronald J. Zboray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the Civil War, publishing in America underwent a transformation from a genteel artisan trade supported by civic patronage and religious groups to a thriving, cut-throat national industry propelled by profit. Literary Dollars and Social Sense represents an important chapter in the historical experience of print culture, it illuminates the phenomenon of amateur writing and delineates the access points of the emerging mass market for print for distributors consumers and writers. It challenges the conventional assumptions that the literary public had little trouble embracing the new literary marketing that emerged at mid-century. The book uncover the tensions that author's faced between literature's role in the traditional moral economy and the lure of literary dollars for personal gain and fame. This book marks an important example in how scholars understand and conduct research in American literature.

Book Charles Dickens and Georgina Hogarth

Download or read book Charles Dickens and Georgina Hogarth written by Christine Skelton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his ‘best and truest friend’. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father–daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina’s refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. He left her the equivalent of almost £1 million and all his personal papers in his will. Georgina’s commitment to Dickens was unwavering but it is far from clear what he did to deserve such loyalty. There were several occasions when he misused her in order to protect his public reputation. Why did Georgina betray her once much-loved sister? Why did she fall out with her family and risk her reputation in order to stay with Dickens? And why did the Dickenses’ daughter Katey say it was ‘the greatest mistake ever’ to invite a sister-in-law to live with a family?

Book Martin Chuzzlewit RLE Dickens

Download or read book Martin Chuzzlewit RLE Dickens written by Sylvere Monod and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although enjoyed my many as a masterpiece of Dickens’ comic writing, Martin Chuzzlewit has long been underrated by professional critics. This volume redresses the balance by devoting its attention to a full critical discussion of the novel and by including a full survey of the critical positions held in the past. As well as discussing the themes of selfishness and hypocrisy, the history of the text is also explored, as is the complex relationship between Dickens and the United States which played a great part in the development of the novel and exerted considerable influence on it early reception.
