Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bibliography, Vol. 4: A Chronological Dictionary of All Books, Pamphlets and Periodical Publications Printed in the United States of America, From the Genesis of Printing in 1639, Down to and Including the Year 1820, With Bibliographical and Biographical Notes In Rhode Island, in 1765, at Providence, William Goddard printed, and published by authority, The Rights of Colonies examined, by Stephen Hopkins, which precipitated a spirited controversy. Martin Howard, junior, replying to this with A Letter from a gentleman at Halifax to his friend in rhode-island, which was printed at Newport by Samuel Hall. To Howard, James Otis replied with A Vindication of the British Colonies against the aspersions of the Halifax gentleman, which was printed by Edes and Gill in Boston. Howard's rejoinder to this is entitled, A Defence of the Letter from a gentleman at Halifax, to his friend in rhode-island, printed by Samuel Hall at Newport; and it elicited from Otis Brief remarks on the Defence of the Halifax libel on the british american Colonies, printed at Boston by Edes and Gill being sustained by the anonymous writer of A Letter to the author of the Halifax Letter, occasioned by his book, entitled A Defence of that Letter. In 1767, at Newport, Samuel Hall printed the fourth revision of the Acts and laws of rhode-island. In 1768, at Providence, John Waterman printed Silas Downer's Discourse at the dedication of the Tree of Liberty, the reported interesting ceremonies being general, probably, on like occasions in the Colonies. In 1769, fostered and encouraged by the Phila delphian Association, was founded the Warren Association of Baptist Churches in New England, whose influence in the cause of civil and religious liberty has been continuous to the present time. Download or read book When Scotland Was Jewish written by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Download or read book Crusoe s Books written by Bill Bell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about readers on the move in the age of Victorian empire. It examines the libraries and reading habits of five reading constituencies from the long nineteenth century: shipboard emigrants, Australian convicts, Scottish settlers, polar explorers, and troops in the First World War. What was the role of reading in extreme circumstances? How were new meanings made under strange skies? How was reading connected with mobile communities in an age of expansion? Uncovering a vast range of sources from the period, from diaries, periodicals, and literary culture, Bill Bell reveals some remarkable and unanticipated insights into the way that reading operated within and upon the British Empire for over a century.
Download or read book The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it written by Suraiya Faroqhi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Islamic law the world was made up of the 'House of Islam' and the 'House of War' with the Ottoman Sultan - successor to the early Caliphs - as supreme ruler of the Islamic world. However, in this ground-breaking study of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern period, Suraiya Faroqhi demonstrates that there was no 'iron curtain' between the Ottoman and 'other' worlds but rather a long-established network of connections - diplomatic, trading and financial., cultural and religious. These extended beyond regional contacts to the empires of Asia and the burgeoning 'modern' states of Europe - England, France, the Netherlands and Venice. Of course, military conflict was a constant factor in these relationships, but the overriding reality was 'one world' and contact between cultured and pragmatic elites - even 'gentlemen travelling for pleasure' - as well as pilgrimage and close artistic contact with the European Renaissance. Faroqhi's book is based on a huge study of original and early modern sources, including diplomatic records, travel and geographical writing, as well as personal accounts. Its breadth and originality will make it essential reading for historians of Europe and the Middle East.
