Chase, Dean of the Division of Fine Arts, Harvard University; and The History of Art as a College Discipline, by Professor Thomas Lindsey Blayney, of the Central University of Kentucky. The aims and purposes of the various types of art schools are given, and the reports of 102 individual schools, with total registration of are tabulated in detail and preceded by a summary. There is also a list tabulating the answers received from 170 colleges in reference to the teaching of the history of art. The total number of students in these colleges during the season of 1909-1910 was and of this number received instruction in the history of art and worked in the studios. A group of illustrations of academic work by students precedes the tabu lated material, and illustrations of pupils' work in design, crafts and indus trial art follow. The balance of the illustrations, sixty in all, reproduce paint ings to which honors have been awarded, sculpture recently unveiled, new art buildings and artists recently deceased. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South.
