Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Art Annual, 1916, Vol. 13 The year of upheaval in Europe has made the millions of residents in the prosperous United States realize that there is something more worth while in life than mere physical well-being. There has grown up an underlying force that makes for a higher and nobler life and in this the arts play' a large part. Not art for art's sake, but art for life's sake; not art for a few individuals, but the arts for the community as a whole. There are many indications of this growing interest in the arts, notably the organization of Friends of Art in Chicago, Syracuse, Detroit, New Orleans, Omaha and Boston. The same spirit is shown elsewhere under different names - Allied Artists of America in New York and in Philadelphia; Three Arts Club in New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Philadelphia, etc. The community spirit is shown in pageants, choral societies, traveling exhibitions held in schools, settlements, and other general meeting places. The special exhibition to bring out the natural artistic talent of the immi grant, organized by Mrs. H. P. Whitney in New York, was immediately followed by a similar exhibition in Philadelphia. Book American Art Annual 1901 Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Art Annual 1901 Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Florence Nightingale Levy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Art Annual, 1901, Vol. 3 An endeavor has been made to show the exact purposes of the various societies, the ways and means by which they were established and are being carried on, in order that other societies may benefit by their experience. Calendars of exhibitions and lectures are given, not only as a record of the work accomplished by one club, but as a guide and incentive for others. Since the first volume of the American Art Annual was published, two years ago, a great advancement is noticeable in the work of the School Art Leagues and the close connection between the opening of Libraries and the establishment of Art Galleries and Art Clubs. The activity of the Architectural Clubs has been increased, and this is due in a great measure to the formation of the Architectural League of America. Many of these Clubs have issued cloth bound catalogues containing special articles and illustrations in addition to the list of exhibits. I acknowledge with thanks my indebtedness to the members of the Advisory Committee, the secretaries of the various societies and others who have assisted in preparing this volume. Lastly, the continuation of the work depends on co-operation, and it is hoped that each society and individual artist will take a personal interest in the success of the undertaking and help to increase the circulation. It is requested that Secretaries forward Reports as soon as issued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists

Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists written by Ann Lee Morgan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of abstract expressionism in the 1940s, America became the white hot center of the artistic universe. Now, in The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists, the first such volume to appear in three decades, Ann Lee Morgan offers an informative, insightful, and long overdue resource on our nation's artistic heritage. Featuring 945 alphabetically arranged entries, here is an indispensable biographical and critical guide to American art from colonial times to contemporary postmodernism. Readers will find a wealth of factual detail and insightful analysis of the leading American painters, ranging from John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, and Mary Cassatt to such modern masters as Jackson Pollack, Romare Bearden, and Andy Warhol. Morgan offers razor-sharp entries on sculptors ranging from Alexander Calder to Louise Nevelson, on photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Man Ray, Walker Evans, and Ansel Adams, and on contemporary installation artists, including video master Bill Viola. In addition, the dictionary provides entries on important individuals connected to the art scene, including collectors such as Peggy Guggenheim and critics such as Clement Greenberg. Morgan also examines notable American institutions, organizations, schools, techniques, styles, and movements. The range of coverage is indeed impressive, but equally important is the quality of analysis that appears in entry after entry. Morgan gives readers a wealth of trustworthy and authoritative information as well as perceptive, well-informed criticism of artists and their work. In addition, the book is thoroughly cross-referenced, so readers can easily find additional information on any topic of interest. Beautifully written, filled with fascinating historical background and penetrating insight, The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists is an essential one-volume resource for art lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1911 Spectrum, Vol. 2 It was in the last stage of desperation that I started for the Annual room when I stopped to listen. There were the usual sounds in the college building, the tick, 'tick, tick, of the office typewriter, the do, do, do, from the singing class, till one was almost forced to add, - bread at last, the familiar cough from the room around the corner, but what was that? It was not the practic ing of an oration, for all I could hear was, It is all changed - all changed. The speaker was an old man of perhaps some seventy odd years and was evidently much impressed. I advanced timidly, Beg pardon, sir, are you a stranger here? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
