Download or read book America s Insular Possessions Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles Harcourt Forbes-Lindsay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Insular Possessions, Vol. 1 of 2 The following pages treat of the American posses sions abroad, including the Philippine Islands, to which a separate volume has been devoted. The chapter on the Great Antilles is justified by our intimate relations to the alien islands of the group and their historical and commercial connection with Porto Rico. Guam occupies what may seem to be an undue amount of space in the book, because there is no popular description of that little island extant, and its history is only to be gathered piecemeal from a number of works inaccessible to the general reader. Moreover, Guam is destined to become in the future a possession of no little importance to the United States. The section on Panama and the Canal covers the story of the enterprise from its inception to the point at which the form of the waterway was finally decided upon and its construction definitely begun. The section includes a description of the Canal as it will ultimately be built. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cambridge History of American Foreign Relations Volume 2 The American Search for Opportunity 1865 1913

Download or read book The Cambridge History of American Foreign Relations Volume 2 The American Search for Opportunity 1865 1913 written by Bradford Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the American Civil War and the outbreak of world War I, global history was transformed by two events: the United States's rise to the status of a great world power (indeed, the world's greatest economic power) and the eruption of nineteenth- and twentieth-century revolutions in Mexico, China, Russia, Cuba, the Philippines, Hawaii, Panama, Nicaragua, and elsewhere. The American Search for Opportunity traces the U.S. foreign policy between 1865 and 1913, linking these two historic trends by noting how the United States - usually thought of as antirevolutionary and embarked on a 'search for order' during this era - actually was a determinative force in helping to trigger these revolutions. Walter LaFeber argues that industrialization fuelled centralisation: Post-Civil War America remained a vast, unwieldy country of isolated, parochial communities, but the federal government and a new corporate capitalism now had the power to invade these areas and integrate them into an industrialization, railway-linked nation-state. The furious pace of economic growth in America attracted refugees from all parts of the world. Professor LaFeber describes and influx of immigration so enormous that it led to America's first exclusionary immigration act. In 1882, the United States passed legislation preventing all Chinese immigrant labour, skilled and unskilled, from entering the country for the next 10 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North and South, Vol. 2 of 2 If Mr. Thornton was a fool in the morning, as he assured himself at least twenty times he was, he did not grow much wiser in the afternoon. All that he gained in return for his sixpenny omnibus ride, was a more vivid conviction that there never was, never could be, any one like Margaret; that she did not love him and never would; but that she - nol nor the whole world - should never hinder him from loving her. And so he returned to the little market-place, and remounted the omnibus to return to Milton. It, was late in the afternoon when he was set down; near his warehouse. The accustomed places brought back the accustomed habits and trains of thought. He knew how much he had to do - more than his usual work, owing to the commotion of the day before. He had to see his brother magistrates he had to complete the arrangements, only half made in the morning, for the comfort and safety Of his. Download or read book The Bluestocking Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Mary Baldwin College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bluestocking, Vol. 2 Despite Voltaire's aphorism (and he may not have been thinking Of a school history) the crimes and misfortunes of this quintette have been negligible. There was the usual struggle for a motto and colors that nobody had used before, the election of Officers, the customary teas and banquets and entertainments by our sister class, and the unvarying indecision finally accompanied by the selection of a school ring - and one, by the way, which will become the standard ring Of M. B. C. Seniors of the future. It is this last - the fact that in some few things we may be establishing a precedent for other Mary Baldwin College students, that makes us proud and a little fearful at being the first class to graduate from this college whose history is now in the making, and though our part in after years may seem very small, we can be glad that we were Of the beginning.
