Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Mission in Egypt: 1854 to 1896 Rev. J. R. Alexander, D. D., kindly furnished me With various Mission Reports and other papers connected with earlier efforts to bring the Gospel to Egypt. 1 am also under great obligations to my colleague, the Rev. W. Harvey, D. D., for reading the whole manuscript and giving me valuable aid. It was not until the vacation of 1893 that I was able to make a beginning of the work of writing during the month I spent in Ramleh. The following year the Mission allowed me to go to a cooler climate for a few months and thus I was able to make considerable progress. Little, however, was added during the brief vacation of 1895. The past summer, however, I spent about four months with slight interruptions at the History and brought it down to the end of 1894 - the copying being done mostly by my wife, in the course of which she was often able to make important suggestions. It is due to her to say that without her stimulus and aid I doubt if the work had ever been finished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Practice of Mission in Egypt

Download or read book The Practice of Mission in Egypt written by Tharwat Wahba and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most mission studies have focused on the work of Western missionaries going to Majority World countries, with few examining indigenous churches and their relationship with Western mission agencies in practicing mission. This book is a historical study of the relationship between the Evangelical Church in Egypt and the American Presbyterian Mission. Wahba covers from when the missionary work began in 1854 until after the departure of the Mission from Egypt in 1967, and the transfer of all the work to the Egyptian Evangelical Church. Tracing the mission work of Egyptians within Egypt and neighbouring Sudan, Wahba analyses the impact that the relationship with the American Mission had and how it determined the indigenous Church’s practice and perspective of mission.

Book American Evangelicals in Egypt

Download or read book American Evangelicals in Egypt written by Heather J. Sharkey and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1854, American Presbyterian missionaries arrived in Egypt as part of a larger Anglo-American Protestant movement aiming for worldwide evangelization. Protected by British imperial power, and later by mounting American global influence, their enterprise flourished during the next century. American Evangelicals in Egypt follows the ongoing and often unexpected transformations initiated by missionary activities between the mid-nineteenth century and 1967--when the Six-Day Arab-Israeli War uprooted the Americans in Egypt. Heather Sharkey uses Arabic and English sources to shed light on the many facets of missionary encounters with Egyptians. These occurred through institutions, such as schools and hospitals, and through literacy programs and rural development projects that anticipated later efforts of NGOs. To Egyptian Muslims and Coptic Christians, missionaries presented new models for civic participation and for women's roles in collective worship and community life. At the same time, missionary efforts to convert Muslims and reform Copts stimulated new forms of Egyptian social activism and prompted nationalists to enact laws restricting missionary activities. Faced by Islamic strictures and customs regarding apostasy and conversion, and by expectations regarding the proper structure of Christian-Muslim relations, missionaries in Egypt set off debates about religious liberty that reverberate even today. Ultimately, the missionary experience in Egypt led to reconsiderations of mission policy and evangelism in ways that had long-term repercussions for the culture of American Protestantism.

Book From Mission to Modernity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Sedra
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-03-30
  • ISBN : 0857719459
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book From Mission to Modernity written by Paul Sedra and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering account of Egyptian educational history, Paul Sedra describes how the Egyptian state under Muhammad Ali Pasha sought to forge a new relationship with children during the nineteenth century. Through the introduction of modern forms of education, brought to Egypt by evangelical missions, the state aimed to ensure children's loyal service to the state, whether through conscription or forced labour. However, these schemes of educational reform, most prominently Joseph Lancaster's monitorial system, led to unforeseen consequences as students in Egypt's new modern schools resisted efforts to control their behaviour in creative and complex ways, and these acts of resistance themselves led to new forms of political identity. Tracing the development of a distinctly Egyptian 'modernity', From Mission to Modernity is indispensable for all those interested in Egyptian history and the history of modern education and reform.

Book European Evangelicals in Egypt 1900 1956

Download or read book European Evangelicals in Egypt 1900 1956 written by Samir Boulos and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missionary institutions were social spaces of closest encounters between Europeans and various segments of the Egyptian society, during the period of British colonialism. In European Evangelicals in Egypt (1900-1956) Samir Boulos develops a theory of cultural exchange that is based on the examination of interactions, experiences and discourses in the context of missionary institutions. Drawing upon oral history interviews as well as rich Egyptian, British and German archival sources, a multifaceted perspective is offered, revealing the complexity and dynamics of mission encounters. Focusing on the everyday life in missionary institutions, experiences of former Egyptian missionary students, local employees, as well as of European missionaries, Samir Boulos explores mutual transformation processes particularly on the individual but also on institutional and social level.
