Book Postharvest Biotechnology of Flowers and Ornamental Plants

Download or read book Postharvest Biotechnology of Flowers and Ornamental Plants written by Dattajirao K. Salunkhe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The floricultural industry has been undergoing an unprecedented revolu tion in terms of the type of commodity produced and the production and marketing technology in both developed and developing countries. As a result of this revolution, as we know today, there is a flower for every purpose and for every person in the world, as is evident from the slogan of the Society for American Florists: "say it with flowers". In re cent years, the Latin American and European countries have become sizeable competitors for the North American fresh flower markets and the trend continues growing. Like any other crop production, floricultural production can be divided into three basic factors: (1) production costs (2) quality (3) transportation costs. All these must be optimum for this area or industry to be safe from competition. With increasing consumer awareness and the current recession, the pressure from the artificial floral products in dustry and also of neighbouring countries on the American fresh flower industry, and continued competition even amongst the growers, whole salers and retailers, quality in floricultural industry is becoming increas ingly important to all those concerned with handling these products. The visual quality aspects of the product are the sole determiner of consumer acceptability in this industry and, unlike fruits and vegetables, flowers cannot be marketed by just discarding the damaged portion.

This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticultural crops are high value crops ensuring maximum returns to the growers with multiple scopes for value addition. Market driven agriculture prescribes quality in every stage of production and total quality management is a challenge to the horticulturist. Present volume on 'Biotechnology of horticultural crops' elaborates the scientific crop management of horticultural crops starting from selection of soil and activities related to production and handling of fresh produces in the field. Scope of value addition, organic farming, protected cultivation, export potential and economic analysis of production are included. The average per capita availability of fruits and vegetables in India is inadequate to meet requirements for nutritional and protective diet of the population. Of the total horticulture production, only 67 % is used for local consumption while 30 % is subjected to post harvest losses, 2 % for export and 0.8 % for processing. There is immense scope for developing horticultural produce market. Changing food habits, life styles and health consciousness and purchasing power have created an unprecedented opportunity for farmers and horticultural entrepreneur. Horticultural research and development which placed India as the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, largest producer and consumer of cashew nut, tea spices, third largest producer of coconut, forth largest producer and consumer of rubber and sixth largest producer of coffee in the world. Today, as a result synergy between focused research, technological and policy initiatives, high efficiency inputs, horticulture in India, has become a sustainable and viable venture for the small and marginal farmers. Besides, the sector has also started attracting entrepreneurs for taking up horticulture as a commercial venture. Therefore, there is a great scope for the horticulture industry to grow and flourish.

Book Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops Atmospheric Environment

Download or read book Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops Atmospheric Environment written by Elizabeth J. Mitcham and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the expertise of the University of California's Postharvest Technology Center, this publication discusses commercial uses of modified- or controlled-atmosphere technology which can be used during transport, temporary storage, or long-term storage of horticultural commodities destined for the fresh market or processing. In modified atmospheres and controlled atmospheres, gases are removed or added to create an atmospheric composition around a commodity that is different from that of air. Modified- or controlled-atmosphere technology can be used during transport, temporary storage, or long-term storage of horticultural commodities destined for the fresh market or processing. Chapter 1 discusses how modified- or controlled-atmosphere technology can be used during transport, temporary storage, or long-term storage of horticultural commodities destined for the fresh market or processing. Chapter 2 discusses the ways biologically important gases are sampled, analyzed, and mixed. Since the rate of respiration of plant tissue is tightly coupled to its overall metabolic rate-and often inversely proportional to shelf life-the measurement and control of respiration are of vital interest in devising strategies to maintain quality after harvest. Chapter 3 discusses the role of Ethylene in the postharvest life of many horticultural crops. Sometimes this role is beneficial (promoting faster and more uniform ripening before retail distribution) and sometimes it is deleterious (speeding senescence and reducing shelf life). This chapter addresses the properties of this gas and ways to both harness its beneficial effects and avoid undesirable results during the postharvest handling of perishable commodities.
