The alliance was good business, and Mary Hodges was a willing bride. Richard prospered, retired from the sea, and founded his own merchant house. With one exception, Richard’s sons went to sea. Hasket Derby stayed ashore, learning to manage the trading network his father built. George Crowninshield was the youngest of four brothers. Three sailed for Salem merchants. Richard Derby enticed George to sail for him by matching George with his daughter Mary. George knew a good opportunity when he saw it. Mary wanted more than a house and children, but marriage was her only option. “Marry me,” George said. “Be my partner.” Eliza Crowninshield set her cap for a husband who would bring her wealth and status. She craved a brick house superior to any other dwelling in Salem. She wanted to dress at the height of fashion and entertain lavishly. Hasket Derby needed a wife as ambitious as he was. He expected to lead the Salem business community and required a wife to complement his achievements. Set during a pivotal time in Salem's history, this gripping work of historical fiction explores the depth of human relationships through nuanced characters and vivid historical details. Perfect for fans of early American history and atmospheric fiction, this novel offers an intimate look at life in colonial New England.

Book Ambition and Arrogance

Download or read book Ambition and Arrogance written by Douglas J. Slawson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a vast array of archival holdings, including the secret archives of the Vatican, this colorful and fascinating story recounts Cardinal William Henry O'Connell's ambitious grasp for power and his arrogant misuse of the trappings of the office. Appointed in 1895 to a minor post in the Catholic church in Rome, Father William O’Connell of Boston built a Vatican power base that made him a bishop, archbishop, and cardinal. His arrogant exploitation of his position drew the wrath of U.S. bishops—who were twice unsuccessful in having him removed from office. Believing that his high position exempted him from the rules of morality, O'Connell was utterly unscrupulous. He discovered multiple ways to turn a profit from his position and by 1923 had amassed a fortune. O’Connell brought further scandal upon his position when he turned a blind eye to the secret marriages of two priests who lived with him, one of them his nephew. When the marriages were discovered, the cardinal brazenly defended his nephew at the expense of the other offender. Had the Cardinal not worn the scarlet that marked him as a prince of the church, he may have gone to the grave a disgraced clergyman. However, his rank, his ability to maintain appearances, and his potent Vatican allies saved him from such a fate. This story serves as a mirror against which to view current affairs in both the Catholic church and the United States.

Book excerpt: In this increasingly cynical world, the word “ambitious” has become synonymous with greed, and a lust for fame or power. This misconception, whether adopted consciously or unconsciously, has trapped countless generations in mediocrity, keeping entire families and communities from ever thriving, cultivating their inherent potential, or changing the world (and themselves) for the better. This book breaks down ambition into its constituent parts, and teaches us how to take advantage of our own potential for change, moving beyond the limits we have always believed to be true, and stepping outside of mediocrity. We are designed to excel, and the obstacles and challenges we face in life are there to teach us and propel us forward. Without the rain that falls, a seed will never reach beyond its small protective shell to become something amazing, adding beauty or shelter or sustenance to the world. By harnessing our ambition, in its purest form, we can break out of those shells that hold us back, and finally grow into whatever it is we were always meant to become.

Well researched, well detailed, and a compelling story make it an enjoyable fresh take on medieval historical fiction." —Alex Telander, San Francisco Book Review [A] brilliant recreation of the lives of inspiring heroines from seventh-century Northumbria." —Readers' Favorite Seventh century England is a hodgepodge of warring Anglo-Saxon states filled with shifting alliances and treacherous grabs for royal power. Kings rise and fall, depending on Woden's Luck. Northumbria, the damp kingdom north of the River Humber, is a state riven with rivalries and kings determined to expand at any cost. Women have no obvious role in a warrior society, but by using their wits, four women—two queens and two abbesses—make monumental changes. One woman marries a pagan king and successfully converts him to Christianity before he dies in battle. One becomes the most powerful abbess in Northumbria and holds the Great Synod at Whitby Abbey, which brings the kingdom back to the Roman Church. Another becomes queen and keeps political alliances strong despite different religious denominations. The fourth woman ushers in a new age by negotiating with kings and churchmen to establish one united church in the Northumbrian kingdom. Based on true events and people, this is the story of Northumbria through the eyes of the most important women of their time.

Book excerpt: At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:14) Nothing can be more humiliating than that time when the disciples should have had such contentions and in such a time and place. When just as Jesus was cogitating his own death and laboring to prepare them for it, they strived and contended about office and rank. This shows how deeply seated the love of power and authority is. Do you want to be greatest? Have a childlike character, says the Lord. It takes no title to be a great leader. Being wealthy does not make one a great leader. That you are educated with highest accolade in education does not qualify you to be a great leader. A great leader is one who is humble and has a servants heart; he is one who rules, guides, inspires, and treats others as he would like to be treated. Having influence or power over others is not leadership; that is dictatorship. A great leader is that person who possesses the ability to lead others like Christ led and has potential to teach others. He is one with the ability to identify gifts and talents in others and guide them to potential. A leader is someone God has chosen and people choose to follow; one who loves and positively influences others to do things they may not otherwise do. Ideally, an effective great leader is a person who imitates Christs style of leadershipa person full of compassion, integrity, and humility and is not a dictator. Again, do you want to be greatest? Have a childlike characterthink like a child, love like a child, trust and have faith in God like a child.

Book The Hazards of Great Leadership

Download or read book The Hazards of Great Leadership written by James K. Beggan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of great leaders seems to be an unquestioned assumption. The goal of this Element is to explore the counterintuitive idea that great leaders can pose a hazard to themselves and their followers. Great leadership, which accomplishes morally commendable and difficult objectives by leaders and followers, requires competence, morality, and charisma. A hazard is a condition or event that leads to human loss, such as injury, death, or economic misfortune. A leader can become a hazard through social psychological processes, which operate through the metaphor of Seven Deadly Sins, to create negative consequences. Great leaders can undermine their own success and accomplishments, as well as their followers. They can become a threat to the organization in which they are employed. Finally, great leaders can become a danger to the larger society. The damage great leaders can create can be reduced by applying the corresponding virtue.

It focuses on the centrality of Chri$, signified by the dollar sign, and compares him with the centrality of Christ which was his cross represented by the "t" in his name which is found missing in the name of Chri$. The book asks readers to self-examine themselves to determine who they are really following and what image and likeness they want their lives to become.
