Book A Singer s Guide to the American Art Song 1870 1980

Download or read book A Singer s Guide to the American Art Song 1870 1980 written by Victoria Etnier Villamil and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004-10-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New in Paperback 2004. Probably the most comprehensive work on the American art song ever available, this book considers the lives and contributions of 144 significant composers in the field, including many for whom information has been extremely scarce. Most composers' entries consist of a biographical sketch; a brief discussion of his or her song writing characteristics (with emphasis on performers' concerns); a partial or complete listing of annotated songs; recording information; and the composer's individual bibliography. Song annotations include poet, publisher, date of composition (when known), voice type, range, duration, tempo indication, mood, subject matter, vocal style, special difficulties, general impression, artists who have recorded the song, and any other pertinent information. Thirty composers whose contributions are deemed of lesser import are summarized in brief essays. Appendixes include a supplement of recommended songs; a listing of American song anthologies and their contents; and the most recent information regarding publishers cited in the guide. There is also a general discography, a general bibliography, and indexes for both titles and poets. Documenting the most important 110 years in the development of American art song, this book is an indispensable tool for singers, teachers, coaches, accompanists, and libraries.

Book Marian Engel s Notebooks

Download or read book Marian Engel s Notebooks written by Christl Verduyn and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marian Engel emerged as a writer during that period in Canada when nationalism increased and “new feminism” dawned. Although she is recognized as a distinguished woman of letters, she has not been widely studied; consequently we know relatively little about her and her craft. The material collected in Marian Engel’s Notebooks: “Ah, mon cahier, écoute...” is a major step in redressing that neglect. Extracts carefully chosen by Christl Verduyn from Marian Engel’s forty-nine notebooks — notebooks Engel began in the late 1940s and which she maintained until her death in 1985 — track Engel’s creative development, illustrate her commitment to the craft of writing and document her growth as a major Canadian writer. The notebooks also portray Engel’s surprising leaps of logic, her fascination with the bizarre, the eclecticism of her reading and the depth and variety of her thinking. Finally, they present moving documentation of a woman facing cancer and early death. Christl Verduyn’s illuminating introductory discussions to each of the notebooks unobtrusively guide us in the reading of these sometimes difficult writings. Marian Engel’s Notebooks: “Ah, mon cahier, écoute...” leaves readers with a vivid sense of Canadian culture during the 1960s and 1970s. It provides insight into the literary life of one of Canada’s significant woman writers, including her connections with other Canadian writers, and will be of special interest to scholars working in the field of literature.

While providing a detailed commentary on his plays the Notebooks also contain early play drafts, poems and stories, his thoughts on life, Brecht, art and dramatic method as well as his notes on censorship.

Book Senator Sam Ervin Last of the Founding Fathers

Download or read book Senator Sam Ervin Last of the Founding Fathers written by Karl E. Campbell and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans remember Senator Sam Ervin as the affable, Bible-quoting, old country lawyer who chaired the Senate Watergate hearings in 1973. His down-home stories from western North Carolina, his reciting literary passages ranging from Shakespeare to Aesop's fables, and his earnest lectures in defense of civil liberties and constitutional government contributed to the downfall of President Richard Nixon and earned Senator Ervin a reputation as ''the last of the founding fathers.'' Yet for most of his twenty years in the Senate, Ervin applied these same rhetorical devices to a very different purpose. Between 1954 and 1974, he was Jim Crow's most talented legal defender as the South's constitutional expert during the congressional debates on civil rights. The paradox of the senator's opposition to civil rights and defense of civil liberties lies at the heart of this biography of Sam Ervin. Drawing on newly opened archival material, Karl Campbell illuminates the character of the man and the historical forces that shaped him....Just as the federalism of the southern delegation to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 had at its core the preservation of slavery, the conservative constitutional philosophy espoused by Ervin in the 1950s had at its core the protection of Jim Crow segregation. Campbell demonstrates that the Watergate scandal cannot be dismissed simply as the moral failure of a particular president or the byproduct of partisan politics. He shows the scandal to be, instead, the culmination of an escalating series of clashes between the imperial presidency of Richard Nixon and a congressional counterattack led by Senator Ervin. The central issue of that struggle, as well as so many of the other crusades in Ervin's life, Campbell says, remains a key question of the American experience today: how to exercise legitimate government power while protecting essential individual freedoms.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the clash between two gigantic personalities in the early years of the twentieth century. On one side was Admiral Lord Charles Beresford. Physically strong, courageous and hot-headed, he was the most popular admiral in the navy. Addicted to the sound of his own voice, he drew crowds of thousands whenever he spoke in public. On the other side was the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir John Fisher. Of humble origin, he had risen through hard work and genius to become the greatest naval reformer that Britain has ever known. Both men wished to be First Sea Lord. When the prize went to Fisher, Beresford determined to unseat him at any cost. He launched attacks in Parliament, he plotted with Unionist politicians, he leaked state secrets and he courted public opinion. As a popular public figure, no one dared act against him until he finally overstepped the mark and viciously hounded a rear-admiral out of his fleet.A Cabinet inquiry followed, sitting for fifteen days. Its five members listened to Beresfords incoherent account of his eight charges. In the end, they dismissed the charges, but failed to show any warm support for either man. Fishers resignation followed and Beresfords career came to an end.

Book Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshire

Download or read book Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshire written by Kenn Pearce and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s south Lancashire and Cheshire was criss-crossed by a web of railway lines, servicing the various needs of local industries. The region was a haven for railway enthusiasts who pursued the hundreds of steam workhorses based at British Railways depots in 'chemical towns' such as Warrington, Widnes, Wigan and Sutton Oak, besides Southport and Northwich. While these facilities appeared less glamorous than larger counterparts in Liverpool or Manchester, the stories of the engines, trains and the men who were based at the depots in these towns was no less fascinating. Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshireprovides a fascinating portrait of the daily operations of the freight and passenger trains of the region during the final decade of Britain's steam era. It evokes a period of grimy, metal-clattering, smoke-filled industry, and of an era forever etched in our industrial heritage.

Book Daybooks and Notebooks

Download or read book Daybooks and Notebooks written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America's most important poets. Daybooks and Notebooks is an invaluable source for reference on Whitman’s daily activities. This sixteen-year record supplements the biographical information provided in the six volumes of Whitman's Correspondence, functioning as an account book, diary, journal, commonplace book, and notebook all in one. When Whitman began to keep them, the Daybooks were a personal record of predominantly business matters. As William White wrote in the introduction, “He was not only the author but the publisher of his works: he was likewise his own business manager, ship, and promoter. Whatever records he kept, of his sales and distribution, of printing and binding figures, of poetry and prose he sent to newspapers and magazines . . . he entered on the right-hand pages.” Volume II thus offers a rare look at Whitman as a businessman, tending as much to practical matters as to art.

Book The Pulse of China s Grand Strategy

Download or read book The Pulse of China s Grand Strategy written by Jean Kachiga and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies and assesses the grand strategy of Chinese foreign policy following a flurry of diplomatic and investment activities in recent years. Through its adept application of the concept of grand strategy, it examines a series of questions concerning China’s objectives, targets, theaters, operations, coordination, and purpose (teleology). By answering these questions, the book uncovers the deeper motivations behind China’s diplomatic policy, revealing the ‘pulse’ of China’s grand strategy and its implications more broadly to the structure of the international system. Additionally, it offers an evaluation of the external influence exerted by the United States as the incumbent hegemonic power, presenting both the probable policy attitudes of the United States and China’s possible reactions and responses. Through these discussions and evaluations, it ultimately reveals that China’s motivations are deeply rooted both in its political past and in the interests of its ruling communist party, whose determination is the main source of China’s current and future successes in ascending past any other nation. Offering an in-depth exploration of China's grand strategy this book will be of great value to students and scholars of Chinese politics, international relations, and diplomacy.
