Growing Up In The House Of Doom is a collection of stories from a time gone by, when life was simpler, and children actually spent time outdoors playing with other children in a real-life setting. A time when children walked or rode their bikes to little league games, and knew it was time to come home when the street lamps came on. Download or read book My Life on the Courts written by Henry H. Kennedy Jr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After attending Princeton and Harvard Law School, Henry Kennedy Jr. was appointed a United States magistrate when he was just twenty-eight. As the youngest federal judicial officer ever appointed, Kennedy handled many contentious proceedings for which he was ill prepared—all while enduring a short yet failed marriage. But it was not until he was preparing to lead a discussion at a judges’ prayer breakfast that Kennedy ultimately plunged into the darkness of depression. In a fascinating retelling of his life story, Kennedy chronicles his experiences as an African American federal judge who successfully confronted the debilitating symptoms of clinical depression while presiding over consequential cases and issues of our time. While traveling back into his past and revealing his family’s battles with racism and segregation, Kennedy leads others down an inspirational path that proves that positive change is not achieved in one day, but instead throughout a lifetime. Blessed with the guidance and example of his parents and supported by an unlikely cadre of friends, Judge Kennedy is living proof that there is hope for those suffering from depression that they too can overcome their challenges and reclaim their lives, just as he did. My Life on the Courts is the candid memoir of an African American federal judge that chronicles his journey through the courts and out of the depths of depression.

Download or read book The Indigenous Black People of Monroe Louisiana and the Surrounding Cities Towns and Villages written by James O. McHenry ED.D and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for those Louisiana slaves (and all the American slaves) whose labor was forced without regard to their humanity, even further, with unrestrained disrespect for their existence. This book is a tribute to the indigenous (originated in or native to the region) Black people of Northeast Louisiana, those folk who were reared in the rural areas, villages, and small towns; who worked on the farms and plantations; sharecropped; cleared all the land; tended all the livestock; planted and harvested all the crops; cooked for, babysat, and cleaned the homes of White folk; and endured the hardships of it all. This is a tribute to those laborers and professionals who strived for better lives for themselves and their families; the people who remained in Monroe, those who migrated to Monroe to make it a fine place to call home, and those who returned to the warmth of Monroe to live; and also, to those who left the area and moved on to other parts of the United States and world. I want to thank them all for trusting me with their stories.
Download or read book Love in an Altered State written by William J. Potaka Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOVE IN AN ALTERED STATE, encompasses many aspects of the life and times of a seemingly ordinary man and his contribution to posterity. The story begins with the fact that "Bill" has suffered a debilitating cerebral stroke. The time line begins approximately 60 years after the end of World War II, in which Bill served as a paratrooper. Because of his poor health he now appears older than his 86 years. To his very young great-grandchildren he is seen as an old man in a wheelchair. The ignorance of youth has masked the fact that he was once youthful and that he led a remarkable life full of achievement. Much of his life was molded by his heritage and the turbulence of the early 1940s, the preceding Great Depression, and World War II. It is a story of humble beginnings in a Western Pennsylvania coal patch town. It is a tale of hard work, love and separation, duty, honor, and patriotism. The story describes his early home life and family and how he had to quit school to work in the mines to help the family through tough economic times. The book tells the story of his loving wife "Flo" and their courtship and early years. It is a story that exemplifies the power of love. It details the feeling of separation they endured during Bill's nearly three years of military service. Bill's military service is chronicled through the archives of the 11th Airborne Division and other military histories. The actions of the 11th Airborne are interspersed with Flo's life on the home front. From humble beginnings, to a young husband and father in harm's way, to a returning veteran trying to achieve the American Dream, to a life time of community service and achievement in business, Bill has now arrived at his life in an altered state.

Download or read book A Pew Sitter s Search for God written by Houston M. Burnside and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houston Burnside’s journey of faith began in his childhood – not unlike most children. This book helps the reader understand how people who touch us influence the images of God we take with us all our lives. This author was a seeker from the beginning. He shares in beautiful, and sometimes painful stories, how his concept of God changed through his life experiences. Every opportunity that came his way to test his faith was connected to people he learned to include in his circle of faith. He searched for God in family hardships and relationships...in a grandmother who raised him during the first decade of his life...with a loving mother who cared for him in the growing years...and as an underage Marines in China where he met and loved missionaries who helped him on his journey. Coming home, he married and had a family of his own bringing high points of joy and challenges. Houston tells his incredible story of seeking and winning a higher education which prepared him for pastoral ministry. He was ordained but still seeking. At 30 years old, he sought God among the books and writings of giant theologians and philosophers as he studied for his Ph D. He found God there, too, in the most unexpected places. Houston Burnside weaves his remarkable stories across the stepping-stones of change, bringing him through his 27-year career as a professor at San Diego State University. A Pew-sitter’s Search for God will help you recognize the people in your life who impact your thinking and decision-making. As the author says, “The quest never ends.” The book offers quiet satisfaction and hope that all of life is good as long as the seeker never gives up.
