Book Global Perspectives on Amateur Film Histories and Cultures

Download or read book Global Perspectives on Amateur Film Histories and Cultures written by Masha Salazkina and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, the field of amateur cinema has focused on North America and Europe. In Global Perspectives on Amateur Film Histories and Cultures, however, editors Masha Salazkina and Enrique Fibla-Gutiérrez fill the literature gap by extending that focus and increasing inclusivity. Through carefully curated essays, Salazkina and Fibla-Gutiérrez bring wider meaning and significance to the discipline through their study of alternative cinema in new territories, fueled by different historical and political circumstances, innovative technologies, and ambitious practitioners. The essays in this volume work to realize the radical societal democratization that shows up in amateur cinema around the world. In particular, diverse contributors highlight the significance of amateur filmmaking, the exhibition of amateur films, the uses and availability of film technologies, and the inventive and creative approaches of filmmakers and advocates of amateur film. Together, these essays shed new light on alternative cinema in a wide range of cities and countries where amateur films thrive in the shadow of commercial and conventional film industries.

Book Amateur Movie Making

Download or read book Amateur Movie Making written by Martha J. McNamara and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling regional and historical study that transforms our understanding of film history, Amateur Movie Making demonstrates how amateur films and home movies stand as testaments to the creative lives of ordinary people, enriching our experience of art and the everyday. Here we encounter the lyrical and visually expressive qualities of films produced in New England between 1915 and 1960 and held in the collections of Northeast Historic Film, a moving image repository and study center that was established to collect, preserve, and interpret the audiovisual record of northern New England. Contributors from diverse backgrounds examine the visual aesthetics of these films while placing them in their social, political, and historical contexts. Each discussion is enhanced by technical notes and the analyses are also juxtaposed with personal reflections by artists who have close connections to particular amateur filmmakers. These reflections reanimate the original private contexts of the home movies before they were recast as objects of study and artifacts of public history.

Book Colour Films in Britain

Download or read book Colour Films in Britain written by Sarah Street and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Eastmancolor's arrival on the British filmmaking scene is one of intermittent trial and error, intense debate and speculation before gradual acceptance. This book traces the journey of its adoption in British Film and considers its lasting significance as one of the most important technical innovations in film history. Through original archival research and interviews with key figures within the industry, the authors examine the role of Eastmancolor in relation to key areas of British cinema since the 1950s; including its economic and structural histories, different studio and industrial strategies, and the wider aesthetic changes that took place with the mass adoption of colour. Their analysis of British cinema through the lens of colour produces new interpretations of key British film genres including social realism, historical and costume drama, science fiction, horror, crime, documentary and even sex films. They explore how colour communicated meaning in films ranging from the Carry On series to Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to A Passage to India (1984), and from Goldfinger (1964) to 1984 (1984), and in the work of key directors and cinematographers of both popular and art cinema including Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway and Chris Menges.

  • Author : Charles Tepperman

Download or read book Amateur Cinema written by Charles Tepperman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the very beginning of cinema, there have been amateur filmmakers at work. It wasnÕt until Kodak introduced 16mm film in 1923, however, that amateur moviemaking became a widespread reality, and by the 1950s, over a million Americans had amateur movie cameras. In Amateur Cinema, Charles Tepperman explores the meaning of the ÒamateurÓ in film history and modern visual culture. In the middle decades of the twentieth centuryÑthe period that saw HollywoodÕs rise to dominance in the global film industryÑa movement of amateur filmmakers created an alternative world of small-scale movie production and circulation. Organized amateur moviemaking was a significant phenomenon that gave rise to dozens of clubs and thousands of participants producing experimental, nonfiction, or short-subject narratives. Rooted in an examination of surviving films, this book traces the contexts of ÒadvancedÓ amateur cinema and articulates the broad aesthetic and stylistic tendencies of amateur films.

Book Charting Scottish Tourism and the Early Scenic Film

Download or read book Charting Scottish Tourism and the Early Scenic Film written by Samantha Wilson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What impact did walking tours and scenic films have on leisure activities? In what ways did working class travel disrupt normative narratives concerning nature and identity? The appreciation of nature and leisure travel have a complex and interrelated history in Scotland. In Charting Scottish Tourism, Wilson looks at how scenic filmmaking altered the construction of the tourist map and spatial identities at the turn of the 20th Century. Scenic film, the author argues, played a key role in the expansion of regional travel and national tourism during the period. In addition, scenic film provides the modern researcher with an unrivalled source of documentary evidence relating to the manner in which Scottish working and middle class communities explored and reclaimed the natural spaces around them. The author examines the central role of the Scottish scenic within leisure performances and the way in which these films promoted and challenged normative spatial narratives. These discursive shifts, she argues, had a wide-reaching impact on popular assumptions concerning space, nature and identity both home and away. Charting Scottish Tourism provides a fascinating case study and numerous methodological insights for students and researchers interested in documentary film as well as the construction of identity and the natural world.

Book Movies on Home Ground

Download or read book Movies on Home Ground written by Ian Craven and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movies on Home Ground: Explorations in Amateur Cinema offers a critical response to the still under-explored mode of amateur cinema, as a particular sphere of British film practice. Concentrating upon a roughly fifty-year period (1930–1980), during which such filmmaking grew rapidly as a significant leisure activity in Britain, the volume shows how popular ‘cine’ assumed distinctive institutional and ideological forms, and some remarkable aesthetic emphases, grounded in consistent technical and critical apparatuses. Although an outline history of such filmmaking is certainly implicit, the priority of Movies On Home Ground is to offer a series of overlapping perspectives on amateur movie-making, with a view to locating such filmmaking as a component of the broader shape of British film culture. Emphasis is thus given to institutional contexts, technical determinants, and the social formations of practising filmmakers, as well as to concerns with the construction of amateur outlooks, understandings of amateur aesthetics, and the remarkable diversity of amateur genericity. The anthology thus supplies a text offering support to study courses dealing with the many varieties of non-professional participation best understood as truly ‘amateur’, rather than as ‘independent’ or ‘alternative’ filmmaking. By granting the amateur a place within the acknowledged range of significant interventions, the recognised canon of British filmmaking is widened in fascinating new directions.

Book Found Footage Horror Films

Download or read book Found Footage Horror Films written by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the horror subgenre du jour, found footage horror's amateur filmmaking look has made it available to a range of budgets. Surviving by adapting to technological and cultural shifts and popular trends, found footage horror is a successful and surprisingly complex experiment in blurring the lines between quotidian reality and horror's dark and tantalizing fantasies. Found Footage Horror Films explores the subgenre's stylistic, historical and thematic development. It examines the diverse prehistory beyond Man Bites Dog (1992) and Cannibal Holocaust (1980), paying attention to the safety films of the 1960s, the snuff-fictions of the 1970s, and to television reality horror hoaxes and mockumentaries during the 1980s and 1990s in particular. It underscores the importance of The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Paranormal Activity (2007), and considers YouTube's popular rise in sparking the subgenre's recent renaissance.

Book Convergence Culture

Download or read book Convergence Culture written by Henry Jenkins and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What the future fortunes of [Gramsci’s] writings will be, we cannot know. However, his permanence is already sufficiently sure, and justifies the historical study of his international reception. The present collection of studies is an indispensable foundation for this.” —Eric Hobsbawm, from the preface Antonio Gramsci is a giant of Marxian thought and one of the world's greatest cultural critics. Antonio A. Santucci is perhaps the world's preeminent Gramsci scholar. Monthly Review Press is proud to publish, for the first time in English, Santucci’s masterful intellectual biography of the great Sardinian scholar and revolutionary. Gramscian terms such as “civil society” and “hegemony” are much used in everyday political discourse. Santucci warns us, however, that these words have been appropriated by both radicals and conservatives for contemporary and often self-serving ends that often have nothing to do with Gramsci’s purposes in developing them. Rather what we must do, and what Santucci illustrates time and again in his dissection of Gramsci’s writings, is absorb Gramsci’s methods. These can be summed up as the suspicion of “grand explanatory schemes,” the unity of theory and practice, and a focus on the details of everyday life. With respect to the last of these, Joseph Buttigieg says in his Nota: “Gramsci did not set out to explain historical reality armed with some full-fledged concept, such as hegemony; rather, he examined the minutiae of concrete social, economic, cultural, and political relations as they are lived in by individuals in their specific historical circumstances and, gradually, he acquired an increasingly complex understanding of how hegemony operates in many diverse ways and under many aspects within the capillaries of society.” The rigor of Santucci’s examination of Gramsci’s life and work matches that of the seminal thought of the master himself. Readers will be enlightened and inspired by every page.

Book Liberated Cinema Revised and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Liberated Cinema Revised and Expanded Edition written by Daniel J. Goulding and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, Liberated Cinema: The Yugoslav Experience received the first annual "Close-up" award from the Yugoslav Film Institute in 1986 for "outstanding scholarship and for promoting the values of Yugoslav film art internationally." This new edition has been revised and updated throughout. It has been expanded to complete the story of the new Yugoslav cinema of the 1980s and to address major film developments that have taken place in the former Yugoslavia's five successor states. As in his analysis of past periods of Yugoslav cinema, Goulding situates the most recent developments within the context of film economics, state subsidies, and changing patterns of political control. Most significantly, however, he provides an insightful discussion of the ways in which critically important domestic feature films produced or co-produced from 1991 to 2001 reflect on recent brutal internecine warfare and other contemporary social, cultural, and political realities after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
