Book excerpt: In this sensational novel, Judith Michael takes one of our most universal fantasies and spins it into glorious, spellbinding reality. Claire Goddard is thirty-four years old, of modest means and looks. She has raised her teenage daughter, Emma, by herself, working as a designer, but without the confidence or means to fully realize her talent. Her only indulgence, once a week, is buying a lottery ticket. Then, one week, she wins sixty million dollars. Overnight everything changes. She quits her job, indulges in the shopping spree of a lifetime—new house, new clothes, new car, new hairstyle and makeup—and then treats herself and Emma to a celebratory cruise in Alaska. There they meet Quentin and Brix Eiger. Handsome, glamorous, a wealthy entrepreneur, Quentin sweeps Claire into his fast-lane fashionable world, while his temperamental son, Brix, engages Emma in her first love affair. Suddenly Claire and Emma are living in the glittering, colorful world of wealth and power. But inside the rainbow, all is not what it seems…

Download or read book Raised from the Ground written by José Saramago and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A family of Portuguese farmers struggle to survive as world events pass them by in “a novel that resounds with relevance for our own time” (New York Times Book Review). Winner of the City of Lisbon Prize Celebrated author Jose Saramago has delighted readers around the world with his imaginative tales and evocative depictions of life in his native Portugal. His novel Raised from the Ground follows the changing fortunes of the Mau Tempo family—poor landless peasants not unlike Saramago’s own grandparents. Set in Alentejo, a southern province of Portugal known for its vast agricultural estates, the novel charts the lives of the Mau Tempos as national and international events rumble on in the background—the coming of the republic in Portugal, the two world wars, and an attempt on the dictator Salazar’s life. Yet nothing really impinges on the grim reality of the farm laborers’ lives until the first communist stirrings. Raised from the Ground is Saramago’s most deeply personal novel, the book in which he found the signature style and voice that would win him the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Download or read book Purge Poetry Vol 1 written by Veronica Edmondson and published by Veronica M Edmondson. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best ways I have learned to get rid of negative feelings and emotions was to arm myself with my pen and purge with words. I asked friends and family to provide me with poetry prompts and through free verse, I used the prompts to write from my heart; releasing old feelings and emotions that rented space in my head. These poems are based on things I have thought, heard, felt, or experienced through the eyes of others. When we hold onto negative experiences whether ours or someone else’s it creates negative energy that we permit to live in our minds and keep us unfocused, but when releasing these feelings through the tip of our pens we gain peace of mind, clarity, and focus to live in the NOW. If you are willing to allow your feelings to live in the ink of your pen and transfer into words, you can set your mind free. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my anthology of poems. Thank you to my friends and family for the words that helped me purge.
Download or read book The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy written by James Purdy and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected here for the first time are the complete short stories of “a singular American visionary” (New York Times). The publication of The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy is a literary event that marks the first time all of James Purdy’s short stories—fifty-six in number, including seven drawn from his unpublished archives—have been collected in a single volume. As prolific as he was unclassifiable, James Purdy was considered one of the greatest—and most underappreciated—writers in America in the latter half of the twentieth century. Championed by writers as diverse as Dame Edith Sitwell, Gore Vidal, Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Carl Van Vechten, John Cowper Powys, and Dorothy Parker, Purdy’s vast body of work has heretofore been relegated to the avant-garde fringes of the American literary mainstream. His unique form and variety of style made the Ohio-born Purdy impossible to categorize in standard terms, though his unique, mercurial talent garnered him a following of loyal readers and made him—in the words of Susan Sontag—“one of the half dozen or so living American writers worth taking seriously." Purdy’s journey to recognition came with as much outrage and condemnation as it did lavish praise and lasting admiration. Some early assessments even dismissed his work as that of a disturbed mind, while others acclaimed the very same work as healing and transformative. Purdy's fiction was considered so uniquely unsettling that his first book, Don't Call Me by My Right Name, a collection of short stories all reprinted in this edition, had to be printed privately in the United States in 1956, after first being published in England. Best known for his novels Malcolm, Cabot Wright Begins, Jeremy's Version, and Eustace Chisholm and the Works, Purdy captured an America that was at once highly realistic and deeply symbolic, a landscape filled with social outcasts living in crisis and longing for love, characterized by his dark sense of humor and unflinching eye. Love, disillusionment, the collapse of the family, ecstatic longing, sharp inner pain, and shocking eruptions of violence pervade the lives of his characters in stories that anticipate both "David Lynch and Desperate Housewives" (Guardian). In "Color of Darkness," for example, a lonely child attempts to swallow his father's wedding ring; in "Eventide," the anguish of two sisters over the loss of their sons is deeply felt in the summer heat; and in the gothic horror of "Mr. Evening," a young man is hypnotized and imprisoned by a predatory old woman. These stories and many others, both haunting and hilarious, form a canvas of deep desperation and immanent sympathy, as Purdy narrates "the inexorable progress toward disaster in such a way that it's as satisfying and somehow life-affirming as progress toward a happy ending" (Jonathan Franzen). It may have taken over fifty years, but American culture is finally in sync with James Purdy. As John Waters writes in his introduction, Purdy, far from the fringe, has "been dead center in the black little hearts of provocateur-hungry readers like myself right from the beginning."
