This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alvord's History of Noble County, Indiana N laying Alvord's History of Noble county, Indiana, before its patrons, the publisher takes pardonable pride in the fact that he has fulfilled conscientiously every promise made in the prospectus and points with pleasure to the neatness of the typography; the quality of paper upon which the work is printed, and the elegance and durability of its binding. As to its contents the patrons have already had an opportunity of approving of their biographies before they were placed in type, while the illustrative department is the 725 plus ultra of the art. The History of Noble county, by Samuel E. Alvord, gives an accurate and minute history of the county, derived or deduced from the acts of the true creators thereof, as depicted in their biographies, from the day of the pioneers to the present time, and biography is, in fact, the true source of all social and political history. To those who have been uniformly obliging, and have kindly interested them selves in the success of this work, volunteering information and data, which has been very helpful in preparing this work, I desire to express my grateful and profound acknowledgment of their valued services. Book Albion and Noble County

Download or read book Albion and Noble County written by Mark R Hunter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named after Indiana's first US senator, Noble County was formed in 1836, just eight years after the first recorded white settlers arrived and 20 years after Indiana's formation. Settlements grew with transportation: a trail from Fort Wayne became the now-historic Lincoln Highway; the Sylvan Lake dam, built to supply a proposed canal, attracted author Gene Stratton Porter; and railroads arrived. Each time the population grew and shifted until the citizens voted to place the county seat in "The Center," the geographic center of Noble County. Soon, Albion occupied the space, making it the smallest township in America. With 117 lakes, the Elkhart River, a state park, and numerous historic sites, Noble County became a destination for tourists, while Albion's historical downtown area, centered on a century-old courthouse in a town carved from wilderness, stands in the center of it all.

Download or read book Britain to America written by William E. Van Vugt and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1820 to 1860, the United States and Great Britain were the two most closely interconnected countries in the world in terms of culture and economic growth. In an important addition to immigration history, William Van Vugt explores who came to America from Great Britain during this period and why. Disruptions and economic hardships, such as the repeal of Britain's protective Corn Laws, the potato famine, and technological displacement, do not account for the great mid-century surge of British migration to America. Rather than desperation and impoverishment, Van Vugt finds that immigrants were motivated by energy, tenacity, and ambition to improve their lives by taking advantage of opportunities in America. Drawing on county histories, passenger lists of immigrant ships, census data, and manuscript collections in Great Britain and the United States, Van Vugt sketches the lives and fortunes of dozens of immigrant farmers, miners, artisans, skilled and unskilled laborers, professionals, and religious nonconformists.
