Book Alumni Register of Officers Faculties and Graduates 1837 1900 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alumni Register of Officers Faculties and Graduates 1837 1900 Classic Reprint written by De Pauw University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alumni Register of Officers, Faculties and Graduates, 1837-1900 The present edition of the Register contains one new feature which needs some explanation, - that of the historical sketch and of the character sketches, with accompanying portraits of many of the deceased members of the faculty. It was at the earnest request of many of the older alumni that these have been intro duced. When, after much consideration, it was finally decided upon, it was agreed that there should be no mention made of any who are now living, nor of any deceased who became members of the faculty after 1875, which will account for the omission of the names of some who have done much toward the develop ment and growth of the University. It is the expectation that these sketches shall be a part of a series, which, when taken together, shall record something more than the mere names of those who have done so much to make our University what it has been and now is. For the first time the alumni of the Law, Music, and Art Schools have had the same attention as the College of Liberal Arts. The result is, perhaps, all that could have been expected, but is far from satisfactory. It is earnestly requested that any one who may know the facts concerning any deceased, or of the present address of any living, where the address is incorrect or not given, will at once send the same to the editor to be filed for use in the preparation of the next edition. The same request is made in regard to the alumni of the Medical School. It is hardly necessary to say that every effort has been made to avoid errors and omissions, and to correct any that may have crept into former editions. Acknowledgement is hereby given to those who have responded to requests for information, and to those who kindly prepared the different sketches. Further more, it is requested that those interested, either personally or as alumni, will report promptly as they occur, changes of address, obituary notices, changes of name by marriage, academic and other official honors received, - in fact, any information that may properly find a place in this Register. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Register of the Officers and Alumni, 1873-1904 This is the first General Register to be published by the University. It is intended to give a concise history of the person nel of the University, as to officers, faculty, and graduates, from the date of organization to July 1, 1904. The information has been obtained from many sources, but principally from the persons named in the volume, the records of the Secretary of the Board of Regents, the University catalogues, and the records of the Alumni Association. The officers and members of the Board of Regents have been arranged in order of appointment, or election; the officers of administration, according to the plan of the Annual Catalogue; and the officers of instruction, on the basis of seniority. The data concerning each officer is limited to his career in the Uni versity of Oregon. In the list of the Alumni appear the names of the graduates of the old Normal Course, abolished in 1884. By formal act of the Board of Regents in June 1890, the degree of B. S. Was con ferred on all graduates of the Normal Course. The English Course had but one graduate. The degrees of B. L. And B. S. D. Have been conferred only once (1897) in the history of the University. The B. L. Degree was conferred on three graduates of the class of 1897 for the completion of the four-year Literary Course. The B. S. D. Degree was given to six graduates of a short course in Scientific Didactics. The present volume contains the names of all graduates of the University, including the class of 1904. It is intended to give a concise history of the personnel of the University for the first ten years, closing with July 1, 1902. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Register of Publications of the Institute and of Its Officers, Students and Alumni, 1862-1893 The compilation, at the present time, was resolved upon for three reasons: tst, it was felt that the longer the matter was delayed, the less likelihood would there be of its being ever accomplished 2d, circum stances, not likely to occur again, made it possible for the compiler to give the necessary time to the work 3d, and chiefly, it was thought that it would be a pleasant thing to give to Professor rogers, as he retires from active duty, this new evidence of the usefulness of the school in whose beginnings he has had so great a share. The publication of the list has been made possible by the generous subscriptions of professors, alumni, and friends, and by the aid of the Alumni Association. The compiler is under obligations to a great many persons for assistance in collecting material and, especially, for advice and counsel to Professor Charles R. Cross, Secretary of the Alumni Association. It is hoped that this will be followed in the course of five or, at most, of ten years by a similar bibliography, covering the interval; and all persons whose names should appear in the list are earnestly requested to communicate to the undersigned any errors or omissions which they may discover in the present issue, and also to furnish him with the titles of whatever they may print promptly as the articles appear. The work will be kept in such shape that, in case of accident to the present compiler, some one else can readily take it up and carry it on. Download or read book The University of Georgia written by Thomas G. Dyer and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1985-12-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas G. Dyer’s definitive history of the University of Georgia celebrates the bicentennial of the school’s founding with a richly varied account of people and events. More than an institutional history, The University of Georgia is a contribution to the understanding of the course and development of higher education in the South. The Georgia legislature in January 1785 approved a charter establishing “a public seat of learning in this state.” For the next sixteen years the university’s trustees struggled to convert its endowment--forty thousand acres of land in the backwoods--into enough money to support a school. By 1801 the university had a president, a campus on the edge of Indian country, and a few students. Over the next two centuries the small liberal arts college that educated the sons of lawyers and planters grew into a major research university whose influence extends far beyond the boundaries of the state. The course of that growth has not always been smooth. This volume includes careful analyses of turning points in the university’s history: the Civil War and Reconstruction, the rise of land-grant colleges, the coming of intercollegiate athletics, the admission of women to undergraduate programs, the enrollment of thousands of World War II veterans, and desegregation. All are considered in the context of what was occurring elsewhere in the South and in the nation.
