Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgetown University is a new book by alumni Paul ONeill (C'86) and Bennie Smith (C'86). The book includes 200 images from Georgetown University's archives along with captions that tell the story of the university's first 200 years. Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in America, was founded in 1789 by Archbishop John Carroll, SJ, as an academy for boys that was open to "Students of Every Religious Profession" and "every Class of Citizens." Carroll established the school on a hilltop overlooking the Potomac River, "delightfully situated" as Charles Dickens would observe several decades later. Georgetown welcomed its first student, William Gaston, in 1791 and was chartered by Congress in 1815, but by the time of the Civil War, when Federal troops occupied the campus, the school was on the brink of collapse. It was not until the presidency of Patrick F. Healy, SJ, in 1873 that Georgetown would recover and be set on a course to become a university, linking Georgetown College with professional schools of medicine and law. The early 20th century was marked by the founding of the schools of dentistry, nursing, foreign service, languages and linguistics, and business. Now among the top universities in America, Georgetown is continuously reinvigorated by teaching and scholarship dedicated to serving the nation and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in America, is located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1789 and chartered by Congress in 1815, Georgetown experienced many of the same trials faced by the United States, and like the country, triumphed to enjoy extended prestige and prosperity. Georgetown University is a photographic journey through the school's first 200 years and celebrates the heritage of one of today's premier universities. More than 200 vintage images illuminate the historic campus, early classes, annual events, and prolific leaders. The story begins with the school's founder, Archbishop John Carroll, who first envisioned Georgetown as an academy for training young clergy for the new Catholic Church in America. Twice during the 1800s, the school's enrollment dropped so low that consideration was given to relocating the school or closing it completely. The Civil War turned students into soldiers and classrooms into hospitals; school colors of blue and grey remind us even today of North and South reunited after the war. Rev. Patrick Healy, S.J., known as the school's second founder, obtained university status for Georgetown and transformed the physical campus by constructing the massive Romanesque building that now bears his name. The 20th century brought about further development to the campus, curriculum, and cultural programs, while faculty, staff, and supporters from all backgrounds and races joined the Georgetown experience.

Book excerpt: The age of intelligent machines is upon us, and we are at a reflection point. The proliferation of fast-moving technologies, including forms of artificial intelligence, will cause us to confront profound questions about ourselves. The era of human intellectual superiority is ending, and, as a species, we need to plan for this monumental shift. A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence Is Redefining Who We Are examines the immense impact intelligent technology will have on humanity. These machines, while challenging our personal beliefs and our socio-economic world order, also have the potential to transform our health and well-being, alleviate poverty and suffering, and reveal the mysteries of intelligence and consciousness. International human rights attorney Flynn Coleman deftly argues that it is critical we instil values, ethics, and morals into our robots, algorithms, and other forms of AI. Equally important, we need to develop and implement laws, policies, and oversight mechanisms to protect us from tech's insidious threats. To realize AI's transcendent potential, Coleman ad- vocates for inviting a diverse group of voices to participate in designing our intelligent machines and using our moral imagination to ensure that human rights, empathy, and equity are core principles of emerging technologies. Ultimately, A Human Algorithm is a clarion call for building a more humane future and moving conscientiously into a new frontier of our own design.

Book Radical Vision

Download or read book Radical Vision written by Soyica Diggs Colbert and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating portrait of Lorraine Hansberry's life, art, and political activism--one of O Magazine's best books of April 2021 "Hits the mark as a fresh and timely portrait of an influential playwright."--Publishers Weekly In this biography of Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), the author of A Raisin in the Sun, Soyica Diggs Colbert considers the playwright's life at the intersection of art and politics, with the theater operating as a "rehearsal room for [her] political and intellectual work." Colbert argues that the success of Raisin overshadows Hansberry's other contributions, including the writer's innovative journalism and lesser known plays touching on controversial issues such as slavery, interracial communities, and black freedom movements. Colbert also details Hansberry's unique involvement in the black freedom struggles during the Cold War and the early civil rights movement, in order to paint a full portrait of her life and impact. Drawing from Hansberry's papers, speeches, and interviews, this book presents its subject as both a playwright and a political activist. It also reveals a new perspective on the roles of black women in mid-twentieth-century political movements.
