Book Oxidation of Tungsten

Download or read book Oxidation of Tungsten written by Vincent David Barth and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a detailed review of available information on the oxidation of W and its alloys. W is relatively inert below 700 C. As the temperature is increased above this level, however, oxidation becomes progressively more rapid, reaching catastrophic rates at temperatures around 1200 C and above. Various theories for the mechanism and rates of W oxidation at different temperatures are reviewed, and the effect of pressure and water vapor on the stability of W oxides is discussed in detail. The elevatedtemperature reactions of W with other materials, such as refractory oxides, and with gases other than oxygen also are covered. Information on the protection of W by alloying and coating is included. (Author).

Book Ultrathin Aluminum Oxide Films

Download or read book Ultrathin Aluminum Oxide Films written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First principles density-functional slab calculations are used to study 5 Å (two O-layer) Al2O3 films on Ru(0001) and Al(111). Using larger unit cells than in a recent study, it is found that the lowest energy stable film has an even mix of tetrahedral (t) and octahedral (o) site Al ions, and thus most closely resembles the [kappa]-phase of bulk alumina. Here, alternating zig-zag rows of t and o occur within the surface plane, resulting in a greater average lateral separation of the Al-ions than with pure t or o. A second structure with an even mix of t and o has also been found, consisting of alternating stripes. These patterns mix easily, can exist in three equivalent directions on basal substrates, and can also be displaced laterally, suggesting a mechanism for a loss of long-range order in the Al-sublattice. While the latter would cause the film to appear amorphous in diffraction experiments, local coordination and film density are little affected. On a film supported by rigid Ru(0001), overlayers of Cu, Pd, and Pt bind similarly as on bulk truncated [alpha]-Al2O3(0001). However, when the film is supported by soft Al(111), the adhesion of Cu, Pd, and Pt metal overlayers is significantly increased: Oxide-surface Al atoms rise so only they contact the overlayer, while substrate Al metal atoms migrate into the oxide film. Thus the binding energy of metal overlayers is strongly substrate dependent, and these numbers for the above Pd-overlayer systems bracket a recent experimentally derived value for a film on NiAl(110).

Book Behavior of Interfacial Micro defects in Aluminum and Its Oxide Film

Download or read book Behavior of Interfacial Micro defects in Aluminum and Its Oxide Film written by Renchun Huang and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, numerical simulation was used to calculate the equilibrium solution composition of cylindrical nanopores in surface oxide films as a step to evaluate their possible roles in the breakdown of protective oxide films. The solution composition of such nanopores is of interest from a corrosion perspective, since they play prominent roles in several mechanisms for the breakdown of passive films leading to pitting corrosion. The chemical composition of the pore solution would determine whether rapid dissolution at the pore could initiate. The effects of nanoscale pore dimensions, solution pH and adsorbing ion borate concentration on the solution composition in the pore were examined. Additionally, the behavior of interfacial voids in aluminum and voids in aluminum oxide films, of interest as corrosion initiation sites, was investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS). TEM successfully detected circular voids with size of [difference] 50 nm in anodic films. The depth profiles of voids in the oxide film were also obtained from AFM images after different extents of oxide stripping. The result demonstrated that oxide voids are formed at the metal-film interface during anodic oxide growth, likely as a result of the oxidation of metal atoms. The result also suggested that metallic voids are formed repeatedly at certain sites on the metal surface.
