Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, as the previous ones, consists primarily of review artic1es. However, it also contains a large quantity of original material on the growth of crystals and films. Priority is given to experimental work. Only two artic1es are concerned exc1usively with the theory of crystal growth. Theoretical aspects are treated in several others. This volume is divided into three parts. Part I, "Epitaxy and Transformations in Thin Films," stems from the current broad application of lasers and optical effects in general to crystal growth (in particular, the growth of thin films). The first three artic1es of the book are devoted to this topic. In particular, the laser pulse vaporization method, for which a comparatively slow deposition rate is typical (which should not always be viewed as a drawback), is distinguished by the unique kinetics of the initial growth stages. These are not entirely explained. However, this method is completely suitable for oriented or generally ordered growth of films under otherwise equal conditions. Another artic1e of this section is based on use of ultrashort (down to picosecond) laser pulses. It emphasizes the nonequilibrium processes of crystallization and decrystallization that are characteristic for such influences. In particular, material heated above its melting point and metastable states in the semiconductor melt exhibit these qualities.

Book The Single Crystal Synthesis and Some Properties of Aluminum Nitride

Download or read book The Single Crystal Synthesis and Some Properties of Aluminum Nitride written by Cortland O. Dugger and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report, which covers the period from March 1972 to 30 June 1975, discusses some conditions for the synthesis of aluminum nitride (AIN) single crystals from solution. The solvent systems used are unique and novel. The average sized, water-white, bipyramidal AIN single crystals reproducibly grown from solution only were 1.1 mm long X 0.3 mm wide. The average sized, AIN single crystals grown from a combined solution-vapor reaction technique were 4mm long X 3 mm wide X 2mm thick. The in-house quantitative evaluation of the crystals was restricted to Laue patterns and emission spectrometry only. In Appendices A, B, C, and D, general discussions of solution growth, other AIN growth methods, some properties of AIN, and a very brief discussion of the newly emerging surface acoustic wave (SAW) device technology and why the use of AIN is considered a good electro-acoutic material in SAW devices are presented. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is not confined to mechanical twinning in the narrow sense (lattice reorientation in re sponse to mechanical stress); it deals also with many effects related to mechanical twinning. such as formation of reoriented regions in response to high temperatures (martensite transformations. recrystallization twins). elec tric fields (ferroelectric domains). and magnetiC fields (magnetic domains). Mechanical reorientation is discussed for classical twinning and also for an inhomogeneous distribution of residual stresses (irrational twinning. kinking. and so on). Mechanical twinning in the narrow sense (regular. symmetrical lattice reorientation in response to me chanical stress) was for many years a specialist topic for mineralogists. petrographers. and crystallographers. Mineralogists and crystallographers carried out the study of the basic geometrical relationships in twinning; the principal names here are MUgge, Niggli. Johnsen. Reusch. Baumhauer. Churchman. Wallerant. Evans. and FriedeL The laws of mechanical twinning are now widely used in mineral identification and in elucidating the conditions of formation of rocks from the minerals they contain. The distribution of the twin bands in rock forming minerals enables one to establish the later processes that have occurred in the rock. Mechanical twinning is discussed by geOlogiSts and petrologists in the analYSis of flow effects. The importance of mechanical twinning in the plastic deformation and rupture of crystalline solids was W stressed by Academician V.I. Vernadskii in 1897 and by Kirpicheva ina paper entitled WFatigue in Metals in 1914.

Book excerpt: Single crystals of over 100 different electronically active materials have been synthesized using a variety of methods, including growth by flame-fusion, flux, melt, gel diffusion, low-temperature solution, vapor, as well as synthesis by ultra-high-pressure techniques. These crystals, including a large number of doped specimens, emphasize oxides, garnets, silicates, ferrites, fluorides, as well as a large variety of other electromagnetic materials. Charts are presented giving summary data on single crystals grown, percentage and kind of dopants, growth methods and apparatus, crystal dimensions and other physical characteristics, primary research interest or use, crystal system, class, space group, and pertinent references. Several of the growth methods and recent Laboratory accomplishments are described. (Author).

Book excerpt: It was a greatest pleasure for me to learn that Springer-Verlag wished to produce a second edition of my book. In this connection, Dr. H. Lotsch asked me to send hirn a list of misprints, mistakes, and inaccuracies that had been noticed in the first edition and to make corresponding corrections without disturbing the layout or the typo graphy too much. I accepted this opportunity with alacrity and, moreover, found some free places in the text where I was able to insert some concise, up-to-date information about new lasing compounds and stimulated emission channels. It was also possible to increase the number of reference citations. The reader of the second edition hence has access to more complete data on insulating laser crystals. However, sections on laser-crystal physics have not been updated, because a satisfactory de scription of the progress made in the last ten years in this field would have required the sections to be extended enormously or even a new book to be written. Moscow, July 1989 ALEXANDER A. KAMINSKII Preface to the First Edition The greatest reward for an author is the feeling of satisfaction he gets when it becomes c1ear to hirn that readers find his work useful. After my book appeared in the USSR in 1975 I received many letters from fellow physicists inc1uding colleagues from Western European countries and the USA.
