Book Governing Marine Protected Areas

Download or read book Governing Marine Protected Areas written by Peter Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world. A novel governance analysis framework is employed to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? The author explores the many issues that these questions raise, as well as exploring options for addressing them. A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance, as it poses some critical questions for contemporary approaches to related research and offers an alternative theoretical and empirical approach.

Book Environmental Governance

Download or read book Environmental Governance written by Karl Hogl and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An imaginative and stimulating collection of essays that makes an indispensable contribution to the literature on forest and environmental policy and governance.' – David Humphreys, the Open University, UK 'This is a very timely, relevant and interesting volume. Environmental problems are pertinent problems, as the book rightly states, so we need continuous attention and effort to analyse and apply environmental governance modes. Although urgently needed, their effectiveness and legitimacy are neither straight forward nor given. Therefore, a thorough in-depth analysis of these modes, their characteristics and their pros and cons is very helpful, both for academics and policy makers. This is exactly what this book offers.' – Bas Arts, Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands 'This excellent collection of articles by leading scholars in a variety of natural resource policy fields examines cases in participation, horizontal and vertical co-ordination, and the role of science and expertise in environmental policy formation. the legitimacy and effectiveness of each of these key components of governance and meta-governance regimes is assessed in important areas such as climate change and parks and wilderness preservation. the volume brings an admirable consistency of focus to the analysis of new governance modes in environmental policy and sheds new light upon important recent trends and developments in the area.' – Michael Howlett, Simon Fraser University, Canada Environmental policy making has become an experimental field for new modes of governance. This timely book focuses on three prominent characteristics of new governance arrangements: the broad participation of non-state actors, the attempt to improve vertical and horizontal coordination, and the effort to integrate different types of expertise in an effective and democratically accountable way. Building on the analytical perspectives of legitimacy and effectiveness, which are seen as genuine acid test criteria for new governance, this book provides a critical assessment of current practices of participation, coordination and evidence-based policy making in various case studies of environmental governance, in particular in the fields of biodiversity, climate and forest policy. the book provides insights from selected governance processes that go beyond consultancy-style best-practice examples but are embedded in a solid conceptual and theoretical discussion that will be invaluable to policymakers. It will also prove essential for scholars interested in environmental politics; policy studies; public policy; public administration; European politics; as well as science and technology studies.

Book Fencing for Conservation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael J. Somers
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-11-23
  • ISBN : 1461409020
  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book Fencing for Conservation written by Michael J. Somers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between increasing human population and biodiversity conservation is one of the IUCN’s key threatening processes. Conservation planning has received a great deal of coverage and research as a way of conserving biodiversity yet, while theoretically successful, it has never been tested. Simple lines on maps to illustrate conservation areas are unlikely to be successful in the light of human encroachment. It may be that some form of overt display is necessary to ensure the protection of reserves. This may be signage, presence of guards/rangers or physical fencing structures. The need for some form of barrier goes beyond restricting human access. The megafauna of Africa pose a genuine threat to human survival. In southern Africa, fences keep animals in and protect the abutting human population. Elsewhere, fencing is not considered important or viable. Where poverty is rife, it won’t take much to tip the balance from beneficial conservation areas to troublesome repositories of crop-raiders, diseases and killers. Conversely, in New Zealand fences are used to keep animals out. Introduced species have decimated New Zealand’s endemic birds, reptiles and invertebrates, and several sites have been entirely encapsulated in mouse-proof fencing to ensure their protection. Australia faces the same problems as New Zealand, however surrounds its national parks with cattle fences. Foxes and cats are free to enter and leave at will, resulting in rapid recolonisation following poisoning campaigns. How long will these poison campaigns work before tolerance, aversion or resistance evolves in the introduced predator populations?

Book Tropical Deforestation

  • Author : Thomas K. Rudel
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780231080446
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Tropical Deforestation written by Thomas K. Rudel and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly publicized obscenity trial of Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness (1928) is generally recognized as the crystallizing moment in the construction of a visible modern English lesbian culture, marking a great divide between innocence and deviance, private and public, New Woman and Modern Lesbian. Yet despite unreserved agreement on the importance of this cultural moment, previous studies often reductively distort our reading of the formation of early twentieth-century lesbian identity, either by neglecting to examine in detail the developments leading up to the ban or by framing events in too broad a context against other cultural phenomena. Fashioning Sapphism locates the novelist Radclyffe Hall and other prominent lesbians--including the pioneer in women's policing, Mary Allen, the artist Gluck, and the writer Bryher--within English modernity through the multiple sites of law, sexology, fashion, and literary and visual representation, thus tracing the emergence of a modern English lesbian subculture in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on extensive new archival research, the book interrogates anew a range of myths long accepted without question (and still in circulation) concerning, to cite only a few, the extent of homophobia in the 1920s, the strategic deployment of sexology against sexual minorities, and the rigidity of certain cultural codes to denote lesbianism in public culture.
