Download or read book Alternating Current Wiring and Distribution Classic Reprint written by William le Roy Emmet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Current Wiring and Distribution When a current is started iii a wire each line or element of increasing current tends to induce counter E. M. R.'s or reverse currents in the metal in its neighborhood; thus all the metal in the Wire is subjected to two opposing forces, one to create current ow and the other to retard it. The cen tral portions Of the wire are surrounded by these retarding in uences while the outer surface Of the wire can receive them from one side only. The result of this is that when a wire is suddenly sub jected to an E. M. F. The current begins first to ow on its surface, and an appreciable time elapses be fore the full current density reaches the centre Of the wire. Thus the current may be said to begin on the outside and soak into the wire. If the al ternations are sufficiently frequent the central por tions of the wire are practically never reached by the current, and the copper available for conduct tivity is little greater than what it would be if the conductor were a tube Of similar outside diameter. The thickness Of the walls Of the equivalent tube will be less as the frequency increases. It is easy to understand that this effect is relatively greater with large wires than with small also, that it will be much greater with iron than with copper wires. Book The Alternating Current Circuit

Download or read book The Alternating Current Circuit written by W. Perren Maycock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating-Current Circuit: An Introductory and Non-Mathematical Book for Engineers and Students The matter is, of course, a very important one to electrical students; and it also abounds in difficulties, many of which arise from the fact that authorities are by no means agreed as to the explanation of the various phenomena here dealt with. In a work written from a practical or engineering standpoint, such as this is, it is almost absolutely necessary to look upon electricity as a something which flows along the conductor, as both explanation and comprehension are rendered much easier thereby. The student of advanced theories will consequently find little to interest him herein, except in a technical sense. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents: Their Generation, Distribution, and Utilization The little book was received much better than it deserved, and in response to the desire expressed by the publishers and others that it be not allowed to lapse, the writer presents this the second edi tion, which has been carefully gone over with reference to the removal of uncertainties. Some new matter has been added. Together with some rearrangement, and the writer sincerelv trusts that the result will be more continuous and accurate reading. Such criticisms as have been ventured upon the first edition have been very acceptably expressed with a view to improvement. And entirely of a non-captious character, so that the writer desires to take this opportunity to thank his critics and to reinvite their good ofl'ices. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distribution of Current and the Variation of Resistance in Linear Conductors of Square and Rectangular Cross-Section When Carrying Alternating Currents of High Frequency: A Dissertation Fleming4 has measured the ratio of the virtual to the direct current resistance of cylindrical wires using alternating currents of frequency somewhat less than half a million per second. For example, with a fre queney of using a copper wire, no. I4 standard wire gauge, he finds the ratio to be by Russell's formula while his measured value is He considers this agreement between the values, which differ by about eight per cent., as satisfactory. Values are given below for cylindrical wires which differ by less than one per cent., and for square and rectangular sectioned wires about four per cent. The experimental work on cylindrical wires, Cited below, was performed with slightly damped oscillating currents, to determine whether the damping was great enough to make any appreciable difference between the results observed from damped currents and calculated by a formula derived upon the assumption that the currents were undamped. Fleming used undamped oscillations in obtaining his values. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Principles of Alternating Currents Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Alternating Currents Classic Reprint written by Ralph Restieaux Lawrence and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Alternating Currents This book has been developed from notes on Alternating Currents used for several years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the junior students in Electrical Engineering. The portions of the notes dealing with single-phase currents were originally written by Professor H. E. Clifford, Gordon McKay Professor of Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, who was formerly Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The general arrangement and much of the material of these portions of the book arc substantially in the same form as originally written. No attempt has been made to include problems other than those used to illustrate the principles discussed, as two sets of problems on alternating currents, much more comprehensive than could have been incorporated in the book, were already published by Professor W. V. Lyon under the titles "Problems in Electrical Engineering" and "Problems in Alternating Current Machinery." The author wishes to express his indebtedness to Professor H. E. Clifford for the care with which he edited the manuscript and read the proof. The author also wishes to thank Professor W. V. Lyon for his many suggestions. Book Alternating Current Machinery Part I Vol 1

Download or read book Alternating Current Machinery Part I Vol 1 written by William Esty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Current Machinery, Part I, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper For a general system of power transmission electricity stands without a rival. The electric current passes over wires which are stationary, and which may be easily bent in turning corners and in avoiding obstructions. Wires are easily supported in various ways. Most important of all, the cost of electric transmission lines is relatively small, the power lost is small, and' the deprecia tion and maintenance charges against the lines are also relatively small. Moreover, electric power may be turned on, shut off, and controlled by devices that are more positive in action, more rapid and satisfactory in their operation, than those which must be used when other methods of transmitting power are employed. The apparatus for the control and protection of electrical machinery is simpler, more compact, and more reliable on the whole than that required for other systems of power transmission. Electrical transmission over long distances is thus more economical, more flexible, more easily adapted to a variety of uses, and withal more convenient, than any other system. Book Practical Alternating Currents and Power Transmission Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Alternating Currents and Power Transmission Classic Reprint written by Newton Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Alternating Currents and Power Transmission The correct treatment of a subject like alternating Co currents has been regarded, with much truth, as being consistently mathematical on all occasions. The fact I of the matter is, that however mathematical the treatment of the theory may seem to be, the practice is within the scope of any earnest readers intelligence. In other words, opinions are apt to differ as to what is the correct treatment of a subject. To the student of academic forms, mathematics in this case would be the only reason for the treatment being given any consideration at all. To the practical man, interested in the most explicit and, to him, the least mathematical presentation possible, academic forms are looked upon askance. In consequence, the line of division is strongly drawn between the reading matter palatable to the mental taste of one and the other. Calculus is naturally a useful and time-saving tool in making an analysis, but how many regard it as a readily comprehended form of expression in connection with(s, ordinary phraseology and practical, everyday work? There must be, instead of this, a departure if possible, one which is made only to suit those for whom such a departure is absolutely essential under the circumstances.
