  • ISBN : 1472580540
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book The Dress Detective written by Ingrid E. Mida and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dress Detective is the first practical guide to analyzing fashion objects, clearly demonstrating how their close analysis can enhance and enrich interdisciplinary research. This accessible book provides readers with the tools to uncover the hidden stories in garments, setting out a carefully developed research methodology specific to dress, and providing easy-to-use checklists that guide the reader through the process. Beautifully illustrated, the book contains seven case studies of fashionable Western garments – ranging from an 1820s coat to a 2004 Kenzo jacket – that articulate the methodological framework for the process, illustrate the use of the checklists, and show how evidence from the garment itself can be used to corroborate theories of dress or fashion. This book outlines a skillset that has, until now, typically been passed on informally. Written in plain language, it will give any budding fashion historian, curator, or researcher the knowledge and confidence to analyze the material in front of them effectively.

Book Couture Commerce

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexandra Palmer
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780774808262
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Couture Commerce written by Alexandra Palmer and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s were the golden years of haute couture, captured by iconic images of glamorous models wearing dramatic clothes. Yet the real women who wore these clothes adapted them to suit their own tastes, altered them to extend their life, and often could not bear to part with them long after the dresses had outlived their use. This gorgeously illustrated book demonstrates why so many of these designs are still in existence and why we are fascinated by them fifty years later. Couture and Commerce investigates how and why postwar couture fashion was important in its own day. The Paris couture houses survived due to the enthusiasm of the North American fashion press and commercial buyers. Alexandra Palmer traces the European haute couture trade with North America by following actual surviving couture dresses from the design house sketch, through the model used in New York fashion shows and as a template for copies and knock-offs, and finally to the consumer. Couture and Commerce is a remarkable mixture of accessible text, color photographs of the original garments, design house sketches and photographs, retailers’ advertisements, and society page images. Weaving together analysis of the clothes and interviews with those who traded, sold, and wore couture, Alexandra Palmer vividly recreates the 1950s fashion world.

  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Download or read book Being Doll written by Lisa Pavlik-Malone and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume, following Dolls & Clowns & Things, the author once again explores the symbolic relationship between the self and the object. This time, however, the possible fundamental role of cognitive consonance, characterized here as the ability of the mind to integrate opposing ideas into a single expanded understanding of Self, is studied in terms of how it might relate to the following three categories of intuitive experience. One, my physical object, in which consonance or “wholeness” expands one’s understanding of Self when ideas about “youngness” and “oldness” become integrated as part of episodic memories that involve an actual physical (toy) doll. Two, my objectified being, in which consonance takes place when, again, ideas about “youngness” and “oldness” become integrated through the metaphoric objectification of certain points located on the human female body. And three, in which consonance develops as “youngness” and “oldness” ideas become integrated through a doll as a work of art. Within the theoretical framework of each of these three categories, various psychological dynamics which encompass memory, metaphor, and neuroplasticity, are understood to be essential to the molding and shaping of one’s subjective experience of “doll”.
