Book Altars of Tomorrow

Download or read book Altars of Tomorrow written by Ken R. Abell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in and around the boomtown of Creede, Colorado, in 1892, Altars of Tomorrow is the final chapter of the Deacon Coburn narrative that began in Days of Purgatory. It is a poignant story that explores the triumph of hope and redemption in the context of human frailty. Worn down to a ragged frazzle, the River Brethren man from Conoy Creek arrives in town after being in the saddle for nearly eight months. He discovers his daughter now has two rough and tumble sons running along a thin line between shenanigans and delinquency. Coburn comes to the aid of a victim of their mischievous pranks, extending tender mercies to a soul-scarred man whose mind was broken at Chancellorsville. The mystery of Lucinda Enochelli is drawn to a surprising completion when she delivers Coburn a document from his past. The cast of characters is woven into reflective subplots imbued by the tension that comes from confronting questions about life and death, and the contrast between the temporal and the eternal. The words of Sally Twosongs serve as a ribbon wrapped around the ambiguities to provide a bedrock foundation on which to stand: "The Creator's plans and purposes are beyond our ability to reason or comprehend. As it has always been and always shall be."

Book American Catholics and the Church of Tomorrow

Download or read book American Catholics and the Church of Tomorrow written by Catherine R. Osborne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-twentieth century, American Catholic churches began to shed the ubiquitous spires, stained glass, and gargoyles of their European forebears, turning instead toward startling and more angular structures of steel, plate glass, and concrete. But how did an institution like the Catholic Church, so often seen as steeped in inflexible traditions, come to welcome this modernist trend? Catherine R. Osborne’s innovative new book finds the answer: the alignment between postwar advancements in technology and design and evolutionary thought within the burgeoning American Catholic community. A new, visibly contemporary approach to design, church leaders thought, could lead to the rebirth of the church community of the future. As Osborne explains, the engineering breakthroughs that made modernist churches feasible themselves raised questions that were, for many Catholics, fundamentally theological. Couldn’t technological improvements engender worship spaces that better reflected God's presence in the contemporary world? Detailing the social, architectural, and theological movements that made modern churches possible, American Catholics and the Churches of Tomorrow breaks important new ground in the history of American Catholicism, and also presents new lines of thought for scholars attracted to modern architectural and urban history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Shem finds himself being hunted down, with light from flaming torches and chilling taunts piercing the darkness, all he can do as he lies hidden is whisper a silent, desperate prayer into the night air. After escaping with his life, Shem commits himself to following Yahweh, the God of his father, Noah. But a message of impending judgment is about to change his life—and that of his family—forever. The plans of Yahweh, however, do not end with either Noah or his sons. Shem’s descendants encounter his God again and again. Through the infertility of an elderly, wealthy couple and the call to travel into the unknown. Through a family mired in deceit, jealousy and betrayal. Through a famine and an unlikely rise to power. And as they build their altars to Yahweh on their journeys, His purposes unfold… Using Old Testament stories and imagined scenes woven around them, Altars of Stone follows the lives of Noah, Abraham, Jacob and Joseph, through characters close to them. The book seeks to enrich both new and established readers of the Bible, with geographical, cultural and historical details throughout. This is the first instalment of The Line of Shem trilogy, which aims to build up an overview of the main characters and themes of the Old Testament, showing how they link together. ‘Drawing on her knowledge of the ancient world, Corinne Brixton weaves a story on the basis of the Old Testament narrative, imagining with us how our spiritual ancestors experienced God in a world so different from ours, but equally real. A creative and thought-provoking book.’ – Revd. Dr. David Wenham, MA, PhD, Tutor in New Testament, Trinity College Bristol; author of “The Parables of Jesus” and “Paul and Jesus: The True Story”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit has become a stranger. Many long for a closer walk with God, but He seems far away. They go to church. They read the Bible. But they don’t experience His presence. Why? Because many have forsaken the altar—the place where God is found. When we truly encounter Him again, the light and power of God will flow to our homes, then to our houses of worship, then to the nation, and we will never be the same. In Rebuilding the Altar authors Pat and Karen Schatzline passionately challenge you to return to the altar. You see, the altar is not just a physical location or an instrument in a church or synagogue. Through Christ we can experience a daily encounter with Jesus, who became our altar. We must declare this truth to the deceived. We must raise a standard of holiness and no compromise. We must bring hope to the hurting. It’s time for change. It’s time to return to the altar...and encounter God.

With Cain in charge, all of them are toiling on the soil day after day, exhausted and anxious. Cain worries that the season's harvest will not be enough after the upcoming annual sacrifice. He suggests that they offer God old grains instead of new ones from the recent harvest. One day, Abel leads his herd to the pasture and realizes that one little lamb has gone missing. He leaves the rest of the herd and ventures down to the valley of darkness to find it. But Abel gets stuck in the mud, and the king of black locusts appears. He demands Abel to bow down to it for life and prosperity in return. When Abel resists this tempting offer, he becomes filled with the fire of God and rescues himself and his lamb. Back at home, Cain is furious that Abel went all the way for just a little lamb, putting the rest of the flock in danger. That night, Cain also encounters the king of black locusts in his dream. Cain is tempted by the same offer. He chooses to bow down to it. The next day, the family heads to the River Euphrates for the annual sacrifice. Cain offers the old grains and asks God to bless them with a good harvest. However, the smoke from the altar falls to the ground instead of rising to heaven. As the whole family falls into despair because God has clearly rejected their sacrifice, Abel steps forward. Praying that God would send them his fire and restore them, he offers the lamb that he rescued on the altar. The very next moment, they see something coming down from heaven, and it was...

Book Mesa Blanca Whispering Altar

Download or read book Mesa Blanca Whispering Altar written by Florencio Guevara and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s Hispanic generation does not always handle the Spanish language as its vernacular. Many a time, major confusion occurs within Hispanic families because of the lack of bilingual skills. In the spiritist community, this language barrier has all too often caused potential mediums to either continue being handicapped in their development or choose another path that may lead to spiritual pitfalls. Additionally, the English-speaking community is fertile ground for new mediums from this cultural group. Many of the alleged translations of prayer books, particularly those of Allan Kardec, are a sham. You cannot translate them literally word for word. It must be translated in context of the cultural idea being presented. In this, whoever attempted the translations has slapped the public in the face with a horrid, nonsensical excuse for print. At some time, there will have to be a concerted effort to translate these works officially on paper. Up to now, it is done word of mouth, which leaves a lot to be desired when attending a misa (séance). Words evolve in definition over the centuries, as well as from one path in life to another. The word “cave” is a case in point. For mediums, the word originates as “boveda” (BO-vay-dah). The boveda consists of a grouping of glass goblets representing the spiritual quadrant of each medium. Boveda can also mean “hidden treasure box.” Indeed, this spiritual cave is a sanctuary from which our entities whisper their messages to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poem An Altar By the Sea, was written during a time when, after 15 years, I revisited the place of my youth by the sea and encountered a stack of deep memories I had forgotten to remember. I walked along the same roads that I had as a young girl, trod again the paths that led me to where I am today, and reminisced with unforgettable intensity the uniqueness of growing up and living along side the vast realm of the ocean. The highlights of my visits to Egypt are captured in several pieces, as I recall the strangeness of being in a place where antiquity and a modern world collide, totally oblivious to those caught up in the explosion.
