Book A Proposed International Alphabet

Download or read book A Proposed International Alphabet written by John Antonakos and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past hundred years, some fifty international languages have been devised. But what was first needed was an international alphabet. Such an alphabet is needed for a number of reasons. First, it is needed for international communication. An international traveler knowing this alphabet would be able to instantly determine his location by reading signs written with the alphabet. Second, it would make language learning easier since language books would be written with this alphabet. And third, it would make reading and spelling easier for everyone. The proposed alphabet must meet the following conditions: (1) it must be phonetic, (2) it must have a reasonable number of symbols, (3) it must have simple symbols, and (4) it must be acceptable to as many of the world’s people as possible. The thirty-letter international alphabet presented here meets these criteria.

Book Alphabet Juice

Download or read book Alphabet Juice written by Roy Blount Jr. and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ali G: How many words does you know? Noam Chomsky: Normally, humans, by maturity, have tens of thousands of them. Ali G: What is some of 'em? —Da Ali G Show Did you know that both mammal and matter derive from baby talk? Have you noticed how wince makes you wince? Ever wonder why so many h-words have to do with breath? Roy Blount Jr. certainly has, and after forty years of making a living using words in every medium, print or electronic, except greeting cards, he still can’t get over his ABCs. In Alphabet Juice, he celebrates the electricity, the juju, the sonic and kinetic energies, of letters and their combinations. Blount does not prescribe proper English. The franchise he claims is “over the counter.” Three and a half centuries ago, Thomas Blount produced Blount’s Glossographia, the first dictionary to explore derivations of English words. This Blount’s Glossographia takes that pursuit to other levels, from Proto-Indo-European roots to your epiglottis. It rejects the standard linguistic notion that the connection between words and their meanings is “arbitrary.” Even the word arbitrary is shown to be no more arbitrary, at its root, than go-to guy or crackerjack. From sources as venerable as the OED (in which Blount finds an inconsistency, at whisk) and as fresh as Urbandictionary.com (to which Blount has contributed the number-one definition of alligator arm), and especially from the author’s own wide-ranging experience, Alphabet Juice derives an organic take on language that is unlike, and more fun than, any other.

Book Icons of the Alphabet

Download or read book Icons of the Alphabet written by Reese M. Heitner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This book examines the names by which we refer to the letters of the English alphabet, arguing that these letter names provide unrivalled insights into the phonological structure of English, present and past, as well as the many peculiarities of English pronunciation and spelling. Classified either as contronyms, ambinyms or tautonyms, the modern phonological profiles of our ancient Semitic letter names reveal what is unique to English, what is fundamental to language and how letter names emerge as the semiotic product of interchanging languages combined with intralanguage change. This volume promises a much more extensive and deeper linguistic treatment of English letter names than has previously been attempted. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of historical linguistics, phonology and orthography, the history of English, semiotics, and language and literacy teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the Roman alphabet and the people who used it as a medium for the transmission of their civilization. Primarily, this means the Romans and their Italic subjects, speakers of Latin who disseminated the language, and the culture of which it was an expression, throughout Europe and the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. As speakers, readers, and writers of English, we are greatly indebted to the long line of purveyors of Latin in its various forms. When words are borrowed, concepts come with them. So, if we have borrowed a wide variety of Latin words, it follows that we have also borrowed a great deal of the cultural stuff that they encase. This book takes a look at what the authors consider to be some of the more intriguing cultural/linguistic goodies that have crept willy-nilly into the English language over the ages from the Latin cornucopia. - Preamble.
