Book excerpt: Here is, to quote the eminent historian Nathan Irvin Huggins, “one of the finest American autobiographies written in this century.” Born in 1871 in Jacksonville, Florida, James Weldon Johnson began his career as a high-school principal. He went on to attain success as a songwriter on Broadway and as the compiler of the definitive Book of American Negro Spirituals. But he achieved one of his greatest triumphs in 1912, when, under a pseudonym, he published The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man—a classic novel about a musician who rejects his black roots, a novel that is still in print today in multiple paperback editions. Johnson went on to be, from 1920 to 1930, the first African-American head of the NAACP, fighting tirelessly for the passage of a federal anti-lynching law. His life story is that of a truly remarkable man who triumphed over a system of institutionalized racism to become one of black America's leading educators, men of letters, and reformers.

Book Along the Way

Download or read book Along the Way written by Martin Sheen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning nearly 50 years of family history, the book chronicles the remarkable lives of two creative talents, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez. It's a story of father and son set against the backdrop of Hollywood; this narrative is organized around their physical and spiritual journey along the Camino de Santiago, Spain, the thousand-year-old pilgrimage path which traverses Galicia. It is the area from which Sheen's father emigrated to the U.S. and to which Estevez's own son has returned. Along the Waywill focus not just on the lives these men have chosen as artists, but also (and most importantly) on the one they have lived together. It is a story of family bonds and artistic advances and setbacks; of good choices and hard choices; of opportunities lost and opportunities found. Sheen and Estevez will share what they have experienced and learned from each other in their forty eight years as father and son, as fathers of sons, as actors and director, as spiritual seekers, and as concerned citizens of the world. Readers will meet them as real people rather than icons, as two men who have accumulated decades of wisdom and insight they are now ready to share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chosen for the Duchess of Cornwall's online book club The Reading Room by HRH The Prince of Wales When William Blacker first crossed the snow-bound passes of northern Romania, he stumbled upon an almost medieval world. There, for many years he lived side by side with the country people, a life ruled by the slow cycle of the seasons, far away from the frantic rush of the modern world. In spring as the pear trees blossomed he ploughed with horses, in summer he scythed the hay meadows and in the freezing winters gathered wood by sleigh from the forest. From sheepfolds harried by wolves, to courting expeditions in the snow, he experienced the traditional way of life to the full, and became accepted into a community who treated him as one of their own. But Blacker was also intrigued by the Gypsies, those dark, foot-loose strangers of spell-binding allure who he saw passing through the village. Locals warned him to stay clear but he fell in love and there followed a bitter struggle. Change is now coming to rural Romania, and William Blacker's adventures will soon be part of its history. From his early carefree days tramping the hills of Transylvania, to the book's poignant ending, Along the Enchanted Way transports us back to a magical country world most of us thought had vanished long ago.

Book Live Long And

Download or read book Live Long And written by William Shatner and published by Thomas Dunne Books. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Star Trek legend and veteran author William Shatner discusses the meaning of life, finding value in work, and living well whatever your age. "I have always felt," William Shatner says early in his newest memoir, that "like the great comedian George Burns, who lived to 100, I couldn’t die as long as I was booked." And Shatner is always booked. Still, a brief health scare in 2016 forced him to take stock. After mulling over the lessons he's learned, the places he's been, and all the miracles and strange occurrences he's witnessed over the course of an enduring career in Hollywood and on the stage, he arrived at one simple rule for living a long and good life: don't die. It's the only one-size-fits-all advice, Shatner argues in Live Long and..:What I Learned Along the Way, because everyone has a unique life—but, to help us all out, he's more than willing to share stories from his unique life. With a combination of pithy humor and thoughtful vulnerability, Shatner lays out his journey from childhood to peak stardom and all the bumps in the road. (Sometimes the literal road, as in the case of his 2,400-mile motorcycle trip across the country with a bike that didn't function.) William Shatner is one of our most beloved entertainers, and he intends never to stop entertaining. His funny, provocative, and poignant reflections offer an unforgettable read about a remarkable man.

But once they hit their twenties, life got more complicated and the BFFs began to grow distant. When Jane eloped with her slick, wealthy new boyfriend and didn’t invite her oldest friends to the ceremony, the small cracks and fissures in their once rock-solid relationship became a chasm that tore them apart. Ten years later, when her husband is arrested and publically shamed for defrauding his clients, Jane realizes her life among the one percent was a sham. Penniless and desperate, deserted by the high-society crowd who turn their surgically perfected noses up at her, she comes crawling back to her childhood friends seeking forgiveness. But Cara and Meg have troubles of their own. One of them is trapped in a bad marriage with an abusive husband, while the other can't have the one thing she desperately wants: a baby. Yet as much as they’d love to see Jane get her long overdue comeuppance, Cara and Meg won’t abandon their old friend in her time of need. The story of three friends who find themselves on a laugh-out-loud life adventure, Lost Along the Way illuminates the moments that make us, the betrayals that break us, and the power of love that helps us forgive even the most painful hurts.

Book Paths Along the Way

Download or read book Paths Along the Way written by Paul Kenney and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bromley Court Housing Project is a prison without bars where the poor struggle for survival. It is 1967 and the City of Boston is beginning to come apart at the seams. Racial hostility and a preoccupation with the war in Vietnam have brought about the beginnings of dramatic change throughout America. Despite the adversity of the times and their surroundings, a friendship holds fast in Bromley Court. Christopher Conley and Michael McLean are project kids, each attempting to cope with life and its unfairness. Christopher is in his senior year of high school. While on his way to school he sees Lorna, a stunningly beautiful black girl, waiting for the train. After months of observing her from across the expanse of a Boston subway station he summons the courage to speak to her and finally arranges a rendezvous after she gets out of work. Christopher tells Michael of his plans to take Lorna out and to accompany her home. Michael's superior street sense and genuine concern for his best friend cause him to discourage Chris from attempting to take Lorna home, a home located in the heart of Boston's seething black neighborhood. Chris's desire for Lorna outweighs any concerns for personal safety. He is determined to overcome the racial hostility that surrounds them. He has fallen in love with her. Recognizing that Christopher is resolute, Michael insists that he at least take some protection on his venture into a part of the city enclosed by invisible walls of hate and fear. Michael supplies his unwilling friend with a .45 caliber pistol. That night, the lovers meet. A cobblestone street leads the way downward toward the dilapidated brownstone where Lorna lives. Suddenly, Lorna and Chris are attacked by three predators bent upon Christopher's murder and Lorna's rape. During the attack, Christopher retrieves the pistol from his school bag, lying near him in the gutter. With two blasts from the pistol he wounds one of the attackers, saving Lorna and dramatically altering the course of his life. After a tear-filled recitation of the circumstances of the shooting to his devastated mother, and a touching farewell with Michael, Christopher seeks a refuge with his movie actor brother, Jack Conley, amid "the experimental excesses of Hollywood, California." "Paths Along the Way" traces the lives of Christopher and Michael as they unfold against the backdrop of a turbulent yet captivating America. Christopher's path will lead him back to Boston, where he will grow and prosper and ultimately become a prominent trial lawyer, while Michael is bent upon a darker course. He will enlist in the 101st Airborne and become the bravest of the brave as an Army Ranger enduring the horror of the Vietnam War. When he returns home, he becomes a state police detective, wrestling with his demons. Demons that force him to the brink of taking his own life and that of Christopher. On the night of November 2nd, 1991 a Boston Police Detective is brutally murdered during a botched drug raid. A corrupt, Boston Police Detective thereafter orchestrates the elaborate framing of a young black male by the name of Booker Webb as the murderer. Booker is a despised drug addict and the nephew of Lorna, Christopher's long lost love. Lorna then reappears in Christopher's life and implores him to undertake the defense of her flesh and blood. Michael is enlisted as Christopher's investigator. His familiarity with the street leads him to believe in Booker's case. He realizes that Christopher's defense of Booker is his last chance to do something right. In a dramatic confrontation in an Irish neighborhood bar, he brings Christopher back from his wealth and privilege to the window of the hell that he and Booker have known. Christopher's love for Michael and for Lorna cause him to undertake the defense of Booker Webb, while risking all that he has built and hoped for. All the while his only reassurance is to never underestimate the power of the truth.
