Book excerpt: Summary: In the cute town of Lightheart, which is tucked away among quiet hills and whispering woods, four brave friends are drawn into an old story. There are rumors of a dark path that traps them in the unknown and is marked by an old curse. Leo, Mia, Jake, and Zoe decide to solve the secrets that have been haunting their home for a long time by going on a trip that will test their strength and bring them together in ways they never thought possible. With nothing but their unwavering courage and the bonds of their long-lasting friendship, the crew sets out on a journey into the heart of the shrouded route. They run into problems in the form of questions and riddles that block their path. Each one brings them closer to the truth. They are determined and persistent in everything they do, from figuring out the ancient markings on a strange map to facing the scary whispers in the Whispering Woods. Their journey takes a dramatic turn when they find an old rock that is glowing with a soft but strong light. With the help of a road guardian, they figure out that this rock is both where the curse comes from and how to break it. As never before, they fight a war of the shadows that will decide Lightheart's fate as they face the darkness that wants to put out their light. They try to clean the crystal one more time and send out a flash of light that gets rid of the shadows and lifts the curse. The valley, which was dark before, is now filled with light and looks like a beautiful dream. When they get back to Lightheart, there are huge celebrations because they are seen as heroes for finding the truth and making their town better. Generations have learned from the story of the murky road and the brave friends who find a way through it that courage is a virtue, friendship is strong, and light always wins over darkness. Lightheart grows, a tribute to the eternal light that lives inside all of us and a constant warning that light can be found if you're brave enough to look for it, even when things are at their darkest. Chapter 1: the Story Every child in the small village of Lightheart looked forward to a certain activity. In this village, smiles were as common as the flowers that grew everywhere. As the sun went down, the sky would turn orange and pink, and they would gather around a roaring fire, eyes wide with hope. The warm glow of the fire cast swirling shadows behind them, making them look even more scared. Old people in the town, who were wise and wrinkled from age, were about to tell stories that had been told for years. The kids were especially interested in the story about an old trail that was said to be hidden somewhere near their town. People said that this path was cursed by a strong, ancient force and wasn't like any other. The kids leaned in closer, making sure they didn't miss a word as the adults spoke in a respectful but careful way. For those brave enough to cross the road, it was said that the shadows would be so thick that they would feel like they were alive. There were stories about strange sights and sounds, as well as mutterings in the dark that told long-lost secrets. The air around the path was filled with the magic of old spells, and only the bravest people were thought to be brave enough to explore its secrets. The elders warned that the way was guarded by mysteries as old as the stars themselves, illusions that could trick the eyes, and puzzles that could twist the mind. But there was also the idea that overcoming these problems would lead to amazing achievements. The Lightheart kids were very interested in these stories. Their minds were as active as the fires in front of them, making clear pictures of the road that was hidden by the darkness. They dreamed of going on trips to find this interesting road, walking along paths where shadows danced, and finding out what the curse meant. For kids who were brave enough to listen, the story of the old road became a sign of excitement. It was dark outside, and the Lightheart children were very brave when the fire was reduced to glowing coals and the stars started to come out. They dreamed as they went to sleep that they were heroes in their own stories, that they were in myths, and that they found the truth behind the strange path. The story of the old, evil road had a magical effect on the new generation, making them dream, believe, and maybe even go exploring one day.

Book Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path

Download or read book Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path written by Connie Zweig and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to rekindling spiritual inspiration after betrayal and disillusionment • Explains why we are drawn to charismatic leaders, what we unconsciously give away to them, and how to reclaim our inner spiritual authority • Explores how to recover from spiritual abuse or betrayal by a teacher or group, including breaking free of denial, projection, and dependency using psychology and shadow-work • Extends #MeToo into the spiritual domain and tells the stories of contemporary clergy and spiritual leaders who acted out their shadows in destructive ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey, but, according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can learn to recover from loss of faith and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity. Calling on us to expand our vision of religious and spiritual life—and our vision of awakening—to include the human shadow, Zweig examines the yearning that sets us on the spiritual path, showing how it can lead to ecstatic, transcendent experiences or to terrible suffering by projecting it onto an authoritarian teacher, priest, or guru who abuses power. She tells the stories of renowned teachers—Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, and Christian saint Catherine of Siena—whose lives unfolded as they followed their spiritual yearning. And she tells the cautionary tales of contemporary teachers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Catholicism, who acted out their shadows in devastating ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. She explains how meeting the shadow is a painful but inevitable stage on the path to a more mature spirituality. She describes how to use spiritual shadow-work to separate from abusive teachers, reclaim inner spiritual authority, and heal from betrayal. With guidance for both inspired and disillusioned seekers, the author explores how to navigate the narrow path through the darkness toward the light, rekindle the flame of longing, and once again engage in fulfilling spiritual practice.

Book In the Shadow of Angels

Download or read book In the Shadow of Angels written by Charles Maldon Sr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book In the Shadow of Angels,, Charles Maldon reflects upon that season of his life when he was without the peace of God. He presents the contribution of several extraordinary saints whom he addresses as angels who are largely responsible for his journey and victory into the perfect peace of God. He reveals the uniqueness of each angel and relates the love and care provided by each when he needed someone to encourage and stand by him on his march toward his purpose and calling in God. These individuals displayed strength and character that became an incentive for him to strive to be the best person that God ordained him to be. Without them being there, his life in the Deep South would almost definitely have taken a different direction. By the mercy of God, he encountered each of them at a time when he was in desperate need of love and encouragement to keep from fainting. Each of them left him with a lifetime memory and a victory of healing and peace and thankfulness.

Book In His Father s Shadow

Download or read book In His Father s Shadow written by Stanley A. Renshon and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a pampered son who showed little promise, to his rise to the presidency, George W. Bush has transformed himself through acts of will and faith. Stanley Renshon examines the psychological transformation of Bush and identifies those pivotal changes that allowed him to achieve success in his personal life and in the political arena, and shows how Bush's personal transformation has come to shape his political policies. The man who battled--and defeated--his own inner demons has become a president determined to battle the demons of terrorism and extremism that prevent democracy from flourishing around the world. This psychological portrait provides a much-needed antidote to prevailing critiques that ridicule Bush's values and policies, as it celebrates his resolve and strong leadership.

Download or read book In the Shadow of Descartes written by G.H. Von Wright and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-03-31 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes made a sharp distinction between matter and mind. But he also thought that the two interact with one another. Is such interaction possible, however, without either a materialist reduction of mind to matter or an idealist (phenomenalist) reduction of matter to mind? These questions overshadow the Western tradition in metaphysics from the time of Descartes to present times. The book makes an effort to stay clear of reductivist views of the two Cartesian substances. It defends a dualistic psycho-physical parallel theory which reconciles freedom of action with determinism in nature. Basic problems in perception theory are also discussed, with special emphasis on hearing and sound. Because of the intrinsic interest of the subject and the author's non-technical presentation of it, the book should appeal to all readers with a serious interest in philosophy and psychology.

Book Laboring in the Shadow of Empire

Download or read book Laboring in the Shadow of Empire written by Celeste Vaughan Curington and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboring in the Shadow of Empire: Race, Gender and Care Work in Portugal examines the everyday lives of an African descendant care service workforce that labors in an ostensibly “anti-racial” Europe and against the backdrop of the Portuguese colonial empire. While much of the literature on global care work has focused on Asian and Latine migrant care workers, there is comparatively less research that explicitly examines African care workers and their migration histories to Europe. Sociologist Celeste V. Curington focuses on Portugal—a European setting with comparatively liberal policies around family settlement and naturalization for migrants. In this setting, rapid urbanization in the late twentieth century, along with a national push to reconcile work and family, have shaped the growth of paid home care and cleaning service industries. Many researchers focus on informal work settings where immigrant rights are restricted, and many workers are undocumented or without permanent residence status. Curington instead examined workers who have accessed citizenship or permanent residence status and also explores African women’s experiences laboring in care and service industries in the formal market, revealing how deeply colonial and intersectional logics of a racialized and international division of reproductive labor in Portugal render these women “hyper-invisible” and “hyper-visible” as “appropriate” workers in Lisbon.

Book In the Shadow of Phenomenology

Download or read book In the Shadow of Phenomenology written by Stephen H. Watson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02-07 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Merleau-Ponty is widely known for his emphasis on embodied perceptual experience. This emphasis initially relied heavily on the positive results of Gestalt psychology in addressing issues in philosophical psychology and philosophy of mind from a phenomenological standpoint. Eventually he transformed this account in light of his investigations in linguistics, aesthetics, and the philosophy of history and institutions. Far less work has been done in addressing his evolving conception of philosophy and how this account influenced more general philosophical issues in epistemology, accounts of rationality, or its status as theoretical discourse. Merleau-Ponty's own contributions to these issues and, in particular, the theoretical status of the phenomenological account that resulted, have provoked varying responses. On the one hand, some commentators have understood his work to be a regional application of Husserl's foundational account of phenomenology. On the other hand, some commentators have questioned whether, in the final analysis, Merleau-Ponty was a phenomenologist at all. In In the Shadow of Phenomenology, Stephen H. Watson offers an in depth analysis of these responses and the complications and development of Merleau-Ponty's position.

Book excerpt: The novel, The Shadows Within by Lynette Tait, is aptly named in that it deals with the manic and depressing effects of bipolar disorder. It is most enlightening and should be of great value to those suffering from the disorder as well as to those indirectly influencedlovers, friends, or relatives. This can result in a greater understanding of the disorder and contribute to support and encourage empathy toward victims of this disorder. This disorder is interwoven in a gripping plot that includes drug smuggling and murder. A sense of levity is brought to the telling, and this contributes to the book being enjoyable and gripping. The spiritual aspects of the story deviate from conventional trends in religion, and this spirituality is sufficiently flexible to accommodate a variety of personal religious beliefs. Central to this spirituality is a very obvious need experienced by the author, a need to acknowledge the existence of a greater power. The author submits herself to his hand in her life and experiences a great surge of gratitude. The plot is a frenetic roller coaster that culminates in a violent twist in the tale. The authors will to overcome results in her main character being portrayed as a super woman capable of surmounting all challenges and obstacles. This journey into the shadows is not for the fainthearted.
