Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foremost teller of scary stories in his day and a profound influence on both the novelists and filmmakers of the 20th century, Anglo-Irish author JOSEPH THOMAS SHERIDAN LE FANU (18141873) has, sadly, fallen out of scholarly and popular favor, and unfairly so. To this day, contemporary readers who happen across his works praise his talent for weaving a tense literary atmosphere tinged by the supernatural and bolstered by hints of ambiguous magic. An exceptional example of the sensation novela genre that was wildly popular in the Victorian era, with its focus on lurid crime invading previously cheerful, ordinary, and domestic placesthis 1869 classic gives us a rural estate in 1820s England, a happy new bride, and an ancient myth of a wyvern dragon to spoil the tranquility. Or perhaps theres a more rationaland yet more sinisterexplanation for the distress afflicting poor Alice Fairfield, ne Maybell, lady of Carwell Grange? Redolent of future works including the tales of Sherlock Holmes and the thrillers of Stephen King, The Wyvern Mystery continues to enthrall 21st-century readers. With a series of new editions of Le Fanus works, Cosimo is proud to reintroduce modern book lovers to the writings of the early master of suspense fiction who pioneered the concept of psychological horror.

Book excerpt: Connor Wanting Ally was never the problem. That part was always easy. The fact she’s my best friend’s little sister? That I’ve been down this road before and it ended in disaster? Those are complications. Hiding behind an impenetrable wall not even the love of my life can get through? You could say that’s a problem. When a harmless community project cements me with Ally for the most challenging week of our lives, she slowly crumbles those walls until that want turns to more and brings back the feelings I thought I’d buried. Feelings I’m tired of shoving down. Ally Kissing Connor in the shadows wasn’t a problem, until it was. With that first crack in our barriers, the tables turn, and we both succumb to how right it feels to be wrong. Getting my hands on six feet of sex on a stick is everything I wanted—and everything I wasn’t prepared to face. As a single mom, my life is barely controlled chaos. But that chaos is my sanity. That chaos is my children. But is that chaos right for Connor? Or will that kiss in the shadows—that stolen moment—become a complication and end everything we tried to save?

  • Author : Leslie C. Levin
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Lawyers in Practice written by Leslie C. Levin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do lawyers resolve ethical dilemmas in the everyday context of their practice? What are the issues that commonly arise, and how do lawyers determine the best ways to resolve them? Until recently, efforts to answer these questions have focused primarily on rules and legal doctrine rather than the real-life situations lawyers face in legal practice. The first book to present empirical research on ethical decision making in a variety of practice contexts, including corporate litigation, securities, immigration, and divorce law, Lawyers in Practice fills a substantial gap in the existing literature. Following an introduction emphasizing the increasing importance of understanding context in the legal profession, contributions focus on ethical dilemmas ranging from relatively narrow ethical issues to broader problems of professionalism, including the prosecutor’s obligation to disclose evidence, the management of conflicts of interest, and loyalty to clients and the court. Each chapter details the resolution of a dilemma from the practitioner’s point of view that is, in turn, set within a particular community of practice. Timely and practical, this book should be required reading for law students as well as students and scholars of law and society.

Incorporating stories from multiple individuals involved in curriculum development and implementation – university professors, a ministry consultant, a First Nations and Métis Education coordinator, and most importantly, classroom teachers – this book offers suggestions for education stakeholders at different levels. Focusing on the importance of understanding ‘relationships at play’, this book also shows the author’s journey in re/search, wherein she grapples with both Indigenous and Western research frameworks. Featuring a candid account of this journey from research preparation to writing, this book also offers insights on the relationships at play in doing re/search that respects Indigenous ways of coming to know.
