Book Alloys of Chromium Copper and Nickel

Download or read book Alloys of Chromium Copper and Nickel written by Oscar Edward Harder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alloys of Chromium, Copper and Nickel 1. Purpose of the Investigation. - The growing interest in special acid-resisting alloys and the many uses found for them has stimulated both the search for efficient materials of this nature and the study of the causes underlying their inertness. The alloys developed by Professor S. W. Parr for use in calorimeter construction have shown this quality of high resistance to corrosion to a marked degree. The almost perfect insolubility of these alloys in nitric and other acids seems to be conditioned upon a proper mixture of chromium, copper, and nickel, together with smaller quantities of such added metals as tungsten or molybdenum. These additions have so marked an effect in improving both the acid resisting properties and the casting qualities of the alloys that it has seemed desirable to study their effects more systematically in order that they may be used to the best advantage. The complexity of the mixtures used, however, has made the problem a very difficult one and has shown the necessity of first obtaining a more complete knowledge of the ternary alloys of chromium, copper, and nickel, and of the binary alloys of copper and nickel, copper and chromium, and chromium and nickel. With this information in hand it should be possible to understand better the effects produced by additions of a fourth metal. In the work presented in this bulletin a preliminary survey has been made of the binary and ternary alloys and a somewhat systematic study made of their properties. 2. Present State of Information. - Previous investigators have studied in some detail the equilibrium conditions in the three binary systems. The freezing point curves for copper-nickel and chromium-nickel alloys have been fairly well established, but that for the chromium-copper series has been determined only in part, owing to the unusual difficulties attending the work. Book The Analysis of Non Ferrous Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis of Non Ferrous Alloys Classic Reprint written by Fred Ibbotson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys The first edition of this book was published just as the Great War commenced. The war did a great deal to encourage the accurate control of metals by means of chemical analysis, and the non -ferrous metals and alloys experienced this stimulus to a marked extent. In addition, the war brought to the front many and various alloys which previously had been either unknown or very little used. A notable example of this effect was the greatly extended of the light alloys of aluminium. Despite this dual develop ment in the field occupied by the non-ferrous alloys, it cannot be said that there was any concomitant development in the methods employed in their analysis. Some methods were brought forward, but the advance was not startling. The main duty, therefore, of the authors in presenting a new edition is to provide the best analytical methods for those new alloys that have been brought into prominence. They have therefore added to the book methods for the analysis of aluminium and its light alloys, and since the separation of aluminium and zinc presents the most difficult problem in the analysis of such alloys, they have dealt with this separation at some length in a separate chapter. Other alloys which now call for adequate treatment are mainly those of nickel. The principal alloys of this metal are those with copper and those with chromium and iron. Methods for the analysis of all these alloys have been included in this new edition. The other notable additions deal with the determination of the special elements, such as iron or manganese, that are added to the copper-zinc and copper tin alloys in order to give these alloys mechanical properties of special value. Book The Strength of the Alloys of Nickel and Copper With Electrolytic Iron Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Strength of the Alloys of Nickel and Copper With Electrolytic Iron Classic Reprint written by Charles Frederick Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of the Alloys of Nickel and Copper With Electrolytic Iron Of the properties of binary alloys of iron with the common metals comparatively little is known. This is attributed to the fact that pure iron with which to alloy copper or nickel, or tin, or others of the metallic elements, has been a rare laboratory product, and interest has been directed, naturally, to alloys made from commercial materials. Based upon the discovery of a simple method of refining iron electrolytically, an extensive line of laboratory investigation was begun five years ago in the Applied Electrochemistry Lab oratory of the University of Wisconsin, and has been carried on almost without interruption since that time. This investiga tion has consisted in the production and study of the properties of alloys of iron, eliminating as far as possible the common im purities, sulphur, phosphorus, silicon, manganese and carbon. This work has been conducted through facilities afforded by the College of Engineering of the University of Wisconsin and through grants from the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Book The Properties of Some Copper Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Properties of Some Copper Alloys Classic Reprint written by W. Rosenhain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties of Some Copper Alloys The introduction of lead into some of these alloys was tried with a specific object, but they were found to be very laminated. The lead appears to occur in the free state in the metal in the form of long strings of small globules. This structure is illustrated in fig. 4 (plate 1) under a magnification Of 150 diameters. This figure represents an alloy containing 5 per cent. Manganese and 1 per Cent. Of lead. The specimen has been photographed without etching. A comparison of Table II. With Table I. Shows that the alloys have in no case such remarkable properties as those which have been referred to in connection with Table I., but attention may be drawn to the alloy (no. 15) containing 3 per cent. Manganese and 10 per cent. Zinc, which, in the cold rolled condition, has a tensile strength of 47 tons per square inch, With 3 per cent. Elongation, and in the annealed condition a tensile strength of 23 tons per square inch, with 35 per cent. Elongation. Book Nickel and Its Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nickel and Its Alloys Classic Reprint written by United States Bureau Of Standards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nickel and Its Alloys The bureau is continually in receipt of requests for information concerning the properties, statistics, and manufacture of metals and of alloys coming from other departments of the Government, technical or purchasing agents of manufacturing firms, or from persons engaged in special investigative work in universities and private technical institutes. Such information is rarely to be found in systematic form; usually the sources of such information are difficult of access, and their accuracy not always certain. Often quoted information of this sort is valueless, either for the reason that the data upon which it is based are actually incorrect or that they have not been properly interpreted. There are, therefore, being issued from time to time in response to these demands circulars on individual metals or alloys, with the idea of grouping in these circulars all of the best information which the bureau has as a result of its tests and investigations, together with that available in all records of published tests and investiga tions of such material. The circulars deal primarily with the physical properties of the metal or alloy. All other features, except a few statistics of pro duction and the methods of manufacture, presence of impurities, etc., are discussed only in their relation to these physical properties. It must be realized that the physical properties of metals and alloys are often in great degree dependent upon such factors, so that the statement of values for such properties should include information regarding these factors by which the properties are affected. The endeavor, therefore, in the circulars is to reproduce only such data as have passed critical scrutiny and to qualify suitably in the sense outlined above all statements, numerical or otherwise, made relative to the characteristics of the metal. The probable degree of accuracy of data is indicated or implied by the number of significant figures in the values given.
