Book One Hundred Years of Chromosome Research and What Remains to be Learned

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Chromosome Research and What Remains to be Learned written by A. Lima-de-Faria and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Chromosome Research: What Remains to be Learned, offers the reader a critical analysis of the observations and experiments that shaped the last 100 years of chromosome research, as well as the ideas which prevailed during this period. Emphasis is placed on what remains to be learned, particularly in light of reality of the sequencing of DNA which leaves the previous era of chromosome research as a prehistoric event. It is at this turning point, that well formulated questions can be asked about many of the chromosome's properties, which remain to be unveiled. The author, Lima-de-Faria is Professor Emeritus of Molecular Cytogenetics at Lund Unviersity, Sweden, previously Head of the Institute of Molecular Cytogenetics, Lund University.

Book An Introduction to the History of Chronobiology Volume 1

Download or read book An Introduction to the History of Chronobiology Volume 1 written by Jole Shackelford and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three volumes, historian Jole Shackelford delineates the history of the study of biological rhythms—now widely known as chronobiology—from antiquity into the twentieth century. Perhaps the most well-known biological rhythm is the circadian rhythm, tied to the cycles of day and night and often referred to as the “body clock.” But there are many other biological rhythms, and although scientists and the natural philosophers who preceded them have long known about them, only in the past thirty years have a handful of pioneering scientists begun to study such rhythms in plants and animals seriously. Tracing the intellectual and institutional development of biological rhythm studies, Shackelford offers a meaningful, evidence-based account of a field that today holds great promise for applications in agriculture, health care, and public health. Volume 1 follows early biological observations and research, chiefly on plants; volume 2 turns to animal and human rhythms and the disciplinary contexts for chronobiological investigation; and volume 3 focuses primarily on twentieth-century researchers who modeled biological clocks and sought them out, including three molecular biologists whose work in determining clock mechanisms earned them a Nobel Prize in 2017.

Book excerpt: Vistas in Botany, Volume 4: Recent Researchers in Plant Taxonomy covers some of the more important general aspects of plant taxonomy. This volume is composed of seven chapters that link the practice and theory of taxonomy to plant geography, ecology, pollen anatomy, embryology, genetics, and cytology. The opening chapter outlines the views on plant taxonomy classification, the relevance of these views to biological classification, and some of the problems of classification in the non-taxonomic fields of ecology, soil science, and librarianship. The succeeding chapter presents the classification of the spores in higher plants, the cormophytes. This topic is followed by discussions on the embryological characters of taxonomic significance and the interrelations of plant taxonomy, phytogeography, and plant ecology. The final chapters consider the taxonomic preparation of flora and plant fossils. This book will prove useful to taxonomists, botanists, ecologists, and scientists and researchers in the allied fields of botany.

Book Patterns of Chloroplast Reproduction

Download or read book Patterns of Chloroplast Reproduction written by T. Butterfass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book has not been treated comprehensively before. For many years I have hesitated to attempt a monographic presentation because I felt uneasy about the idea of delineating something I am not sure about myself, and I felt it might be rash to try to integrate what seemed-and largely still seems-to consist of a heap of tessera not fitting together. The conviction won over, however, that the many details accumulated thus far call for some order now, and that an appraisal of where we stand would be appropriate. This book, I hope, can fill a gap barring the way to further progress in the field. It is not only a compilation of details but also an attempt to delineate the first outlines of a picture-blurry, obscure, and controversial as it must appear. The imagination of the research worker will be aroused, I hope, and stimulate further progress. In addition to data widely dispersed in the literature much unpublished material has been included. The limited space available prevented me from giving all the details known. The subject is also linked to many neighboring fields of study, but these relationships and their ramifications could not be discussed at length. This is a minor shortcoming, however, compared with our great ignorance of the subject in general.

Book Genetics of Flowering Plants

Download or read book Genetics of Flowering Plants written by Verne Grant and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gore Vidal, known for such best-sellers as The City and the Pillar, Burr, Lincoln, and Myra Breckinridge, is a household name. The controversial Vidal ran for Congress in 1960, and set sparks flying with his public debates challenging William F. Buckley and Norman Mailer. Although one of America's most admired and prolific writers, Vidal has been steadfastly ignored or impugned by many critics. This is partly owing to the vast scope of his writings, which include more than twenty novels, half a dozen plays, dozens of screenplays, countless essays and book reviews, political commentary, and short stories; how do the critics approach such a writer? There has also been backlash against Vidal, whose radical polemics and undisguised contempt for those whom he has called "the hacks and hicks of academe" have hardly endeared him to the critical establishment. Gore Vidal: Writer Against the Grain is the first collection of critical essays to approach this important American writer in an attempt to rectify the unwarranted underestimation of his work. Jay Parini has drawn from the best of previously published criticism and commissioned fresh articles by leading contemporary critics to construct a comprehensive portrait of Vidal's multifaceted and memorable career. Writers as diverse as Harold Bloom, Stephen Spender, Catharine R. Stimpson, Richard Poirier, and Italo Calvino examine Vidal's work in their own highly individual ways, and each finds a different Vidal to celebrate, chide, recollect, or view close up. Also included is a recent interview with Parini in which Vidal discusses his career and his troubled relationship with the reviewers. The Vidal that finally emerges from these essays is a writer of undeniable weight and importance. As readers will agree, Gore Vidal: Writer Against the Grain establishes his rightful role as one of the premier novelists and leading critical observers of this century.
