Book The Two Latin Cultures and the Foundation of Renaissance Humanism in Medieval Italy

Download or read book The Two Latin Cultures and the Foundation of Renaissance Humanism in Medieval Italy written by Ronald G. Witt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the intellectual life of the Kingdom of Italy, the area in which humanism began in the mid thirteenth century, a century or more before exerting its influence on the rest of Europe. Covering a period of over four and a half centuries, this study offers the first integrated analysis of Latin writings produced in the area, examining not only religious, literary, and legal texts. Ronald G. Witt characterizes the changes reflected in these Latin writings as products of the interaction of thought with economic, political, and religious tendencies in Italian society as well as with intellectual influences coming from abroad. His research ultimately traces the early emergence of humanism in northern Italy in the mid thirteenth century to the precocious development of a lay intelligentsia in the region, whose participation in the culture of Latin writing fostered the beginnings of the intellectual movement which would eventually revolutionize all of Europe.

Book Succession Law Practice and Society in Europe across the Centuries

Download or read book Succession Law Practice and Society in Europe across the Centuries written by Maria Gigliola di Renzo Villata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad overview of succession law, encompassing aspects of family law, testamentary law and legal history. It examines society and legal practice in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present from both a legal and a sociological perspective. The contributing authors investigate various aspects of succession law that have not yet been thoroughly examined by legal historians, and in doing so they not only add to our knowledge of past succession law but also provide a valuable key to interpreting and understanding current European succession law. Readers can explore such issues as the importance of a father’s permission to marry in relation to disinheritance, as well as inheritance transactions and private, dynastic and cross-border successions. Further themes addressed by the expert contributors include women’s inheritance rights, the laws of succession for the prince in legal consulting, and succession in the Rota Romana’s jurisprudence.

Book The Collectio Avellana and Its Revivals

Download or read book The Collectio Avellana and Its Revivals written by Rita Lizzi Testa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collectio Avellana (CA) has an extraordinary richness and variety of content. Imperial rescripts, reports of urban prefects, letters of bishops, and exchanges of letters between popes and emperors, some of which only this compilation preserves, constitute an exceptional documentary collection for researchers of various sectors of antiquity. This volume is the first publication to reconstruct the history of this compilation through the fascinating questions that it poses to the scholar. There are essays on its general structure, and on some of the most singular texts preserved therein. Other papers offer a comparison between this compilation and the other canonical collections compiled in Italy between the fourth and sixth centuries, as well as between the CA and other contemporary literary products. Adopting a new approach, some contributions also ascertain who could physically have access to the materials that were collected in the CA, and where the compiler could find them. All these fresh studies have led to new hypotheses regarding the period in which the collection, or at least some of its parts, took shape and the personality of its author.

Book The Benefits of Peace Private Peacemaking in Late Medieval Italy

Download or read book The Benefits of Peace Private Peacemaking in Late Medieval Italy written by Glenn Kumhera and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Benefits of Peace: Private Peacemaking in Late Medieval Italy Glenn Kumhera offers the first comprehensive account of private peacemaking, weaving together its legal, religious, political and social meanings across several cities (13th-15th centuries). The ability of peacemaking to hinder criminal prosecution has often been considered the result of government powerlessness. Kumhera, however, examines the benefits of private peacemaking, detailing how its flexibility was crucial in creating a viable criminal justice system that emphasized violence prevention and recognition of jurisdiction while allowing space for friends, neighbors and clergy to intervene. Additionally, he explores the roles of women and clergy in peacemaking, how peace operated in a vendetta culture and how the medieval understanding of reconciliation affected the practice of peacemaking.

Book Italian Humanism and Medieval Rhetoric

Download or read book Italian Humanism and Medieval Rhetoric written by Ronald G. Witt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays are concerned with the nature of early renaissance political thought and the relationship between humanism and medieval rhetoric. One group traces the influence of medieval political thought on the rise of the modern conception of republicanism; others focus on the medieval art of letter writing and its place in the medieval cultural context; while still others analyse the often contradictory thought of the early humanist, Coluccio Salutati (1331-1406), who struggled to reconcile his classical learning with his medieval allegiances. In the collection as a whole humanism emerges as a literary movement drawing as heavily on patristic and medieval culture as on antiquity. Awareness of its various debts permits recognition of what humanism itself contributed to the development of western thought and ethics.

Book The Horoscope of Emperor Baldwin II

Download or read book The Horoscope of Emperor Baldwin II written by Filip Van Tricht and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Horoscope of Emperor Baldwin II Filip Van Tricht presents a microstudy of political, social and cultural life in Latin-Byzantine Constantinople and Romania. A ‘new’ set of sources is used to question the traditionally negative view of the Byzantine capital under Latin rule. Combined with an analysis of other underused historical materials, mid-13th century Latin-Byzantine Constantinople is redefined as a city that—in spite of the Western conquest during the Fourth Crusade—remained dynamic, with vibrant internal and international politics, and with interesting developments in the social, religious, artistic, and scientific spheres. Against the background of a shared Roman past the metropolis on the Bosporus became a fascinating laboratory of Latin-Byzantine interaction.
