Download or read book Raising Black Children written by James P. Comer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1992-11-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of America's most trusted and respected authorities on child care provide answers to nearly 1000 questions on the problem of raising African-American children. Along with the traditional demands of parenthood, today’s parents must grapple with such daunting issues as drugs, AIDS, violence, and educational pressures. But black parents face an even more challenging task: they must actively combat negative messages of racism while teaching their children to succeed in a white-dominated culture. In this thorough guide to parenting, two noted child psychiatrists, both African-American, focus on the special concerns of black parents. They offer comprehensive advice on nearly 1,000 common childrearing questions, paying particular attention to such problems as building self-esteem and helping black children cope with the often unconscious racism and microaggressions of white society. Authoritative and comprehensive, Raising Black Children is an indispensable resource for every African-American family and for teachers of all races who seek to gain sensitivity to the needs of their black pupils. “A necessary addition to all parenting and parent-teacher collections.”—Linda Cullum, Library Journal

Download or read book Doing Business with Dory written by D. J. Desai and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the next few seconds as he led me to the pool, all I could do was focus on the candy apple red paint that started from the beginning of the hammer handle to the very end of it. The long streak of red paint was shaped like an S, and the handle looked to be a worn-out brown color. The hammer also looked like it was somehow attached to the outside of a dirty leather belt which I assumed was fastened around the man's waist. He must be one of the maintenance men, I thought, telling myself I would probably eventually end up in the pool dead. Oh my God! I silently whispered to Jesus. He's going to kill me. Help me Lord, I prayed without a sound. I was too horror-struck to say a word out loud. All I knew to do was to let him have his way with me and pray for my survival. After the man angrily led me down the last step in the pool, he thrust my face straight down into the water. Then he held my head under for what seemed like several minutes. When he finally let me up for air, I started coughing and choking on the chorine water that had slowly filled up in my lungs. Then he vigorously pulled me close to him, as he clung aggressively to the tape he had wrapped around my eyes, though I could see nothing at this point. Suddenly, I felt him pulling at the bottom of my two-piece bathing suit, trying to take it off of me, but I was only struggling for my breath. I thought I would surely pass out soon, if he didn't rape me or viciously stab me with the knife first. I was scared stiff for my life, but as the next few seconds slowly passed by, nothing seemed to matter much anymore. I knew I was fading away fast because my breathing felt so shallow. Now, I was hoping and praying I would drown to death before he raped and killed me. D.J. DeSai lives in Louisville, Kentucky where she loves to write books and songs. She is also the author of Dory's Oh My God Stories and More Dory's Stories.
Download or read book God S Divine Interventions written by Wendy Anton Abone and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gods Divine Interventions is a very touching story of an eleven-year-old boy from Papua New Guinea whose hope was gone when told by neurosurgeons at Port Moresby General Hospital that nothing could be done to remove a mass (tumor), the size of a golf ball sitting on the left side of his brain stem. Further, the mass was blocking out fluids that were compressing his brain, causing those severe headaches and, more alarmingly, threatening his eyesight. Lacking proper medical equipment and expertise in the country, the only solution was an overseas trip that would cost a lot of money. This was a luxury the family couldnt afford, and time being of essence as fluids kept building up, the only hope was to leave it all in Gods hands. Gods Divine Interventions shares the emotional experiences of a broken mother pleading for her sons life at the feet of Jesus. It is an inspirational story that will hold your mind in awe of how God works when there seem to be no way at all.
