Book excerpt: As Brandon Sanderson’s #1 bestselling Skyward series celebrates its third volume, Cytonic, travel back in time to the origin of Cytonics in the novella Defending Elysium. Centuries before Spensa looked skyward from the planet Detritus—back on Old Earth before it was lost—Jason Write faced a crucial question: was humanity ready to join galactic society? When faster-than-light communications were discovered by a small telephone company in 2071, alien species such as the Tenasi and Varvax overheard them and came to visit Earth. Because the Phone Company controls all communications with the aliens, their operatives like Jason operate above the law. Now, on the space platform Evensong, one of the Phone Company’s scientists has gone missing before surfacing in a hospital with amnesia, and Jason is sent to investigate. Right as he arrives, the body of a murdered Varvax ambassador is discovered, sure to cause a galactic incident. Coln Abrams of the United Intelligence Bureau seizes the opportunity to investigate Jason as he deals with the crisis. This could be the UIB’s chance to discover the Phone Company’s secrets—how does FTL communication work, and what is Jason hiding? Winner of Spain’s UPC Award for Science Fiction in 2007.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller! From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the second book in an epic series about a girl with a secret in a dangerous world at war for humanity's future. All her life, Spensa's dreamed of becoming a pilot and proving herself a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned there were crushing. The rumors of her father's cowardice are true--he deserted his Flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure that there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father that day could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars--and what they revealed to her was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie. Humankind has always celebrated heros, but who defines what a hero is? Could humanity be the evil the galaxy needs to be protected from? Spensa is determined to find out, but each answer she discovers reveals a dozen new questions: about the war, about her enemies, and even, perhaps, about Spensa herself. But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself--and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to. Download or read book The Extinct Scene written by Thomas S. Davis and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1935, the English writer Stephen Spender wrote that the historical pressures of his era should "turn the reader's and writer's attention outwards from himself to the world." Combining historical, formalist, and archival approaches, Thomas S. Davis examines late modernism's decisive turn toward everyday life, locating in the heightened scrutiny of details, textures, and experiences an intimate attempt to conceptualize geopolitical disorder. The Extinct Scene reads a range of mid-century texts, films, and phenomena that reflect the decline of the British Empire and seismic shifts in the global political order. Davis follows the rise of documentary film culture and the British Documentary Film Movement, especially the work of John Grierson, Humphrey Jennings, and Basil Wright. He then considers the influence of late modernist periodical culture on social attitudes and customs, and presents original analyses of novels by Virginia Woolf, Christopher Isherwood, and Colin MacInnes; the interwar travel narratives of W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, and George Orwell; the wartime gothic fiction of Elizabeth Bowen; the poetry of H. D.; the sketches of Henry Moore; and the postimperial Anglophone Caribbean works of Vic Reid, Sam Selvon, and George Lamming. By considering this group of writers and artists, Davis recasts late modernism as an art of scale: by detailing the particulars of everyday life, these figures could better project large-scale geopolitical events and crises.

Book excerpt: From #1 bestselling author Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson comes the second of three Skyward series novellas, each told from the perspective of a different member of the team back on Detritus. Read Alanik's story between Starsight and Cytonic. “Don’t trust their lies. Don’t trust their false peace.” That is the warning that Alanik of the planet ReDawn gave the human pilot Spensa after Alanik’s ship crash-landed on Detritus. While accepting an invitation to meet with her people’s enemy, the Galactic Superiority, Alanik heard Spensa’s cry for help across the vastness of space, and she used her cytonic powers to hyperjump her ship to the source of that cry. What she found there was a shock—a whole planet of free humans fighting against the Superiority. Were they the allies her people desperately needed? When she recovered from her injuries and met the friendly humans Jorgen and FM of Skyward Flight, she found that her warning to Spensa had gone unheeded by the government of Detritus, and they were considering a peace overture from the Superiority. Now having returned to ReDawn, Alanik is dismayed to learn that her own people are falling into the exact same trap. The faction in ReDawn’s government that wants to appease the Superiority has gained the upper hand. With Alanik’s mentor, Renakin captured, she has no one to turn to but Jorgen, FM, and their friend Rig. An ancient technology may have the power to save both of their planets from disaster, but can they discover its secrets before it’s too late? Download or read book The Ball Park Boys written by Shade Jones and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-12-19 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Money He then gave Tommy a hard pull on both of his ears causing him to cry out and fall to the ground. Gary lunged towards the nasty smelly man, but I moved quicker and jumped in front of him. I knew as quick as the razor sharp knife had disappeared into his pocket it could reappear. The Ball Park Boys always stuck together and would defend each other, but this wasn't a fight they could win today. "I'm giving you ten traps and if you want to make some money, catch me some muskrats. Don't screw up their hides and you better not loose any of my traps, you little punks got that?" the nasty smelly man said as he glared at us with those beady mean looking eyes. Gary and Tommy both had a look on their face that I had not seen before. The look wasn't one when we had been behind in a baseball or football game and the other team would taunt us, or call us names. This look was different. This look was one of anger and bitterness. I knew one day I may not be able to stop them should we encounter the nasty smelly man and he started messing with Tommy again. Excerpt from The Best Boat Ever We are now going faster and backwards down the rapids. In unison Tommy and Jerald who had not said a word since we launched, began screaming at the tops of their lungs. They knew the end was near. They wouldn't even get to see what large tree or rock that we would crash in to would send them flying out backwards and then watch as our new death wagon slowly Fall on top them, pushing them to their watery graves. These thoughts made them scream even louder. I still had a death grip on my pole and was keeping it under water as we raced backwards. Suddenly it stuck in the mud and sand on the bottom knocking me forward into the backs Of Jerald and Tommy. This made them only scream louder, as they knew the end was near. I never let go of the grip on my pole and as I regained my balance our boat miraculously stopped and very slowly the front began to turn back into the middle of the river. The river had now widened and was much deeper and yes calm. After our boat spun around straight I pulled my pole out of the hole it was stuck in and gave up a slight push. The water had become quiet and was moving slowly. We had just survived death. Our boat was still floating although it had a couple inches of water in the middle. Gary, Tommy and Jerald all turned to look at me. They gazed at me with a strange look. Excerpt from Baseball It didn't matter that blood was coming from our sliding arms and hands. We had played on much rougher infields before. We executed our much practiced method of pop-up sliding when stealing a base. We would never turn to look for a ball, or in this situation people coming after us. It didn't matter, we were on our feet racing down the long driveway. Our feet were barely touching the ground and when we reached the railroad tracks we only went faster. We were racing towards home, towards safety. We were not going to stop until we were at the Ball Park, or home base. That was all that mattered now. We would be safe there, we would be home.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The riveting inside story of three heroic astronauts who took on the challenge of mankind’s historic first mission to the Moon, from the bestselling author of Shadow Divers. “Robert Kurson tells the tale of Apollo 8 with novelistic detail and immediacy.”—Andy Weir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian and Artemis By August 1968, the American space program was in danger of failing in its two most important objectives: to land a man on the Moon by President Kennedy’s end-of-decade deadline, and to triumph over the Soviets in space. With its back against the wall, NASA made an almost unimaginable leap: It would scrap its usual methodical approach and risk everything on a sudden launch, sending the first men in history to the Moon—in just four months. And it would all happen at Christmas. In a year of historic violence and discord—the Tet Offensive, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy, the riots at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago—the Apollo 8 mission would be the boldest, riskiest test of America’s greatness under pressure. In this gripping insider account, Robert Kurson puts the focus on the three astronauts and their families: the commander, Frank Borman, a conflicted man on his final mission; idealistic Jim Lovell, who’d dreamed since boyhood of riding a rocket to the Moon; and Bill Anders, a young nuclear engineer and hotshot fighter pilot making his first space flight. Drawn from hundreds of hours of one-on-one interviews with the astronauts, their loved ones, NASA personnel, and myriad experts, and filled with vivid and unforgettable detail, Rocket Men is the definitive account of one of America’s finest hours. In this real-life thriller, Kurson reveals the epic dangers involved, and the singular bravery it took, for mankind to leave Earth for the first time—and arrive at a new world. “Rocket Men is a riveting introduction to the [Apollo 8] flight. . . . Kurson details the mission in crisp, suspenseful scenes. . . . [A] gripping book.”—The New York Times Book Review
