Book excerpt: Excerpt from All About the Klondyke Gold Mines Sitka appears at the southeast corner of this map, and northeast of it is Juneau, the usual fitting out place for miners going to the Yukon. The arrows show the route of miners bound for the Yukon. Steamboats can carry them from Juneau as far as Ty-a. Then they must pack their loads through Chilkoot Pass and boat them through a chain of lakes and down the Lewis River to the Yukon. It is about 700 miles from Juneau to the Klondyke River. The two other most important centres of Yukon mining were Forty Mile Creek, where there were two big mining camps, Forty Mile and Fort Cudahy, and Circle City. All these camps have now been practically deserted in the great rush for the Klondyke. The ever reliable and always trustworthy New York Sun publishes the map as given above. Book excerpt: All About The Klondyke Gold Mines This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book The Klondyke Gold Fields

Download or read book The Klondyke Gold Fields written by Charles Alexander Plempel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Klondyke Gold Fields: Their Discovery, Development and Future Possibilities, With Practical Information on Gold Mining, How to Get There, What to Carry, What to Do, Also Hints of Value to Propectors Traders and Investors The one magic word which has, perhaps, been spoken, written and printed, more than any other, during the past few weeks, is Klondyke. I retain the spelling of the word in the form given because I believe it to be strictly accurate, although many newspapers, doubtless well informed, have departed from the first rendering and have substituted the letter "I" for the letter "Y," a matter of little moment, indeed, but one which may yet give rise to controversy, as the name, itself, bids fair to take a leading place in future history and to become even more celebrated than that of California. As a matter of simple fact, it is as well to observe, the original name of the now notorious river and district was spelt "Thron dak," or "duick," a word of Indian origin, which means, "plenty of fish." To those who are acquainted with gold-bearing strata in various parts of the world, and who make it their business to obtain information in regard to new mineral discoveries, the fact has been well known for many years that the immense territory, bordering on the Arctic Circle and extending on the East into British Columbia and on the West and South into Alaska, contains deposits of gold of incalculable value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of the Klondike: This Book of Travels Gives the True Facts of What Took Place in the Gold-Fields Under British Rule They are a unique class of men. They go out every year with never-dying hope and supply of grub. Either they work a portion of the year to earn money enough to grub-stake them selves out of their savings, or else they enthuse some one into a belief that they will find a mine; and the man who finds the grub-stake is entitled to a one-half interest in any mining property which the prospector may locate. A grub-stake is a term used to designate the provisions carried by the prospector or the sleuth in search of gold. These necessarily are very limited, as he has to carry them on his back; a robe of fox-skin, in which to sleep, as being the warmest fur procur able; flour, bacon, salt, sugar and tea. The only cooking-utensils are a frying-pan, tin plate, tin cup, knife and fork, pick and shovel and gold pan. Birch-bark is in profusion everywhere, and peeling it from the nearest tree the prospector builds a fire and cooks his flour, salt and water in a cake as thin as a flap-j ack, and the frying of his bacon greases the pan for this elaborate meal. At the Christmas holidays of 1897 and 1898 the exodus of Eastern people to the Klondike reached its height. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting for Gold, or Adventures in Klondyke Two years ago a friend of mine went out to the Yukon Valley. From the letters he sent me I have written the following story; also, as a slight acknowledgment of my deep obligation, I beg to dedicate this work to him. Perhaps I may be blamed for getting my ad venturers too easily and quickly up to Dawson City. There are not many Argonauts so favoured by fate, I must admit, if my friend is to be believed; but I did not like to harrow the minds of my readers with too much realism.
