Book All Aboard the Gracie Train

Download or read book All Aboard the Gracie Train written by Gary Savage and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 12th 1993 in Denver, Colorado, the Martial Arts world as we know it changed forever. A young Brazilian called Royce Gracie stepped into an 8 sided chain linked arena to take part in the first Ultimate Fighting Challenge (UFC). He faced a variety of Martial artists and combat veteran's in a no holds barred tournament designed to determine the best and most efficiant hand to hand combat system on the planet. Royce and his family style, 'Gracie Jiu-Jitsu' came out as the undisputed 'Daddy' of the Martial Arts universe. It would be a somewhat slow burn, but Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian jiu-Jiu-Jitsu as it was also known would become the 'must have', Martial Art skill set to acquire for those that recognised its importance as a practical and revolutionary system. In the United Kingdom the slow burn would prove to be a really slow burn, and it would be several years before we would have access to anything resembling Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I was one of those that had been lucky enough, or savvy enough to see the importance of learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I had been a lifelong Martial Artist and this seemed to be the missing piece of the jigsaw that I had been searching for since Bruce Lee had influenced so many with his 'Jeet Kune Do' fighting thesis. This is my story. A light hearted romp that takes you back to 1990's Great Britain and a quest for the Martial Art 'Holy Grail', the real Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Take a trip with me as I navigate the pitfalls, the frustration and ultimately the joy that this great art and its first family The Gracie's gave to me and the Martial Arts world. All Aboard The Gracie Train is for those with a passion for Jiu-Jitsu. It doesn't matter when or how you caught the Jiu-Jitsu train, it is only important that you have gained something from its practice. This is a celebration of the art. It is the story, or at least my story, as to the origins of the art in the United Kingdom.

Book excerpt: This book is one woman's report from the front lines of digital dating. Grace Anderson, a novelist with grown children, an ex-husband, an age beginning with the number "4" and an acute case of writer's block, turns to cyberspace for diversion/inspiration. She finds it in the form of a bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished man she meets in a chat room late one evening. The two of them begin to build a relationship the old-fashioned way - with their words and their imaginations. When her cyberspace swain turns three-dimensional, the good news is that he is indeed bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished, and better yet, drop-dead handsome. The more, interesting news is that he is a Princeton University Wunderkind, twenty-eight years her junior--younger than both of Grace's sons. So, just what happens when the perfect love meets a most socially unacceptable age gap? The road to finding that out will captivate you. The storyline is timely... and the romance... timeless.

"Absolute fire." -- Book Riot Helen and Gracie are pranking their way through middle school when a stinky stunt lands them in the front office -- again. Because nothing else has curbed their chaos, the principal orders the best friends to do the unthinkable: care about something. So they join the school’s Community Action Club with plans to do as little as humanly possible. But when Helen is caught unprepared by an early period and bleeds through her pants -- they were gold lamé! -- the girls take over the club’s campaign for maxi pads in bathrooms for all students who menstruate. In the name of period equity, the two friends use everything from over-the-top baked goods to glitter gluing for change. But nothing can prepare them for a clueless school board (ew), an annoying little sister (ugh), and crushes (oh my!). As Helen and Gracie find themselves closer to change and in deeper trouble than ever before, they must decide if they care enough to keep going . . . even if it costs them their friendship.

Book The Selected Works of T S Spivet

Download or read book The Selected Works of T S Spivet written by Reif Larsen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant, boundary-leaping debut novel tracing twelve-year-old genius map maker T.S. Spivet's attempts to understand the ways of the world When twelve-year-old genius cartographer T.S. Spivet receives an unexpected phone call from the Smithsonian announcing he has won the prestigious Baird Award, life as normal-if you consider mapping family dinner table conversation normal-is interrupted and a wild cross-country adventure begins, taking T.S. from his family ranch just north of Divide, Montana, to the museum's hallowed halls. T.S. sets out alone, leaving before dawn with a plan to hop a freight train and hobo east. Once aboard, his adventures step into high gear and he meticulously maps, charts, and illustrates his exploits, documenting mythical wormholes in the Midwest, the urban phenomenon of "rims," and the pleasures of McDonald's, among other things. We come to see the world through T.S.'s eyes and in his thorough investigation of the outside world he also reveals himself. As he travels away from the ranch and his family we learn how the journey also brings him closer to home. A secret family history found within his luggage tells the story of T.S.'s ancestors and their long-ago passage west, offering profound insight into the family he left behind and his role within it. As T.S. reads he discovers the sometimes shadowy boundary between fact and fiction and realizes that, for all his analytical rigor, the world around him is a mystery. All that he has learned is tested when he arrives at the capital to claim his prize and is welcomed into science's inner circle. For all its shine, fame seems more highly valued than ideas in this new world and friends are hard to find. T.S.'s trip begins at the Copper Top Ranch and the last known place he stands is Washington, D.C., but his journey's movement is far harder to track: How do you map the delicate lessons learned about family and self? How do you depict how it feels to first venture out on your own? Is there a definitive way to communicate the ebbs and tides of heartbreak, loss, loneliness, love? These are the questions that strike at the core of this very special debut. Now a major motion picture directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Kyle Catlett and Helena Bonham Carter.

Book Breathe

Download or read book Breathe written by Rickson Gracie and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** Instant New York Times bestseller *** *** USA Today bestseller *** *** Wall Street Journal bestseller *** From legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA master Rickson Gracie comes a riveting, insightful memoir that weaves together the story of Gracie’s stunning career with the larger history of the Gracie family dynasty and the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, showing how the connection between mind and body can be harnessed for success both inside and outside the ring. Undefeated from the late 1970s through his final fight in the Tokyo Dome in 2000, Rickson Gracie amassed hundreds of victories in the street, on the mat, at the beach, and in the ring. He has joined the pantheon that includes Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Jackie Chan as one of the most famous martial artists of the twentieth century. Jiu-Jitsu, the fighting style developed and pioneered by his family, has become one of the world’s most prominent martial arts, and Vale Tudo, the “anything goes” style of Brazilian street fighting over which the Gracies had a monopoly, was an early precursor to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Simply put, without the Gracie family, there would be no sport of “MMA,” no 4-billion-dollar UFC empire, and no “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu” at strip malls all across America. In Breathe, for the first time, Rickson reveals the full story of how his father and uncles came to develop Jiu-Jitsu, what it was like to grow up among several generations of world-renowned fighters from the Gracie clan, and the principles and skills that guided him to his undefeated record. From learning to assert himself on the streets of Rio to gaining fame and honor in Japan and emerging through heartbreaking tragedy, the martial arts master shares tales of overcoming challenges, extolling universal virtues and showing readers how pride and ego are the enemies of success. With never-before-seen photos and profound insights into the sport and way of life that only a studied legend can provide, Breathe is an entertaining and magnified view of an enduring legacy as well as an inspiring tale of weathering life’s complexities and overcoming them with style and grace.
