  • Author : Max Pinckers
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018

  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book Margins of Excess written by Max Pinckers and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ?Margins of Excess? the notion of how personal imagination conflicts with generally accepted beliefs is expressed through the narratives of six individuals. Every one of them momentarily received nationwide attention in the US press because of their attempts to realize a dream or passion, but were presented as frauds or deceivers by the mass media?s apparent incapacity to deal with idiosyncratic versions of reality.0The current era of ?post-truth?, in which truths, half-truths, lies, fiction or entertainment are easily interchanged, has produced a culture of ?hyper-individual truths?, demanding a new approach to identify the underlying narratives that structure our perception of reality in a world where there is no longer a generally accepted frame of realism. 0Embedding the stories of the six main protagonists into a clustering tale of cloned military dogs, religious apparitions, suspect vehicles, fake terrorist plots, accidental bombings and fictional presidents, this book follows an associative logic akin to the indiscriminate way a paranoid mind connects unrelated events, or the hysteria of the 24-second news cycle.

  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Theorizing Visual Studies written by James Elkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This forward-thinking collection brings together over sixty essays that invoke images to summon, interpret, and argue with visual studies and its neighboring fields such as art history, media studies, visual anthropology, critical theory, cultural studies, and aesthetics. The product of a multi-year collaboration between graduate students from around the world, spearheaded by James Elkins, this one-of-a-kind anthology is a truly international, interdisciplinary point of entry into cutting-edge visual studies research. The book is fluid in relation to disciplines; it is frequently inventive in relation to guiding theories; it is unpredictable in its allegiance and interest in the past of the discipline--reflecting the ongoing growth of visual studies.

Book Matthias Schaller Controfacciata

Download or read book Matthias Schaller Controfacciata written by Matthias Petrus Schaller and published by Steidl/Partners. This book was released on 2008 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venice - a city of color, light and shadows. Matthias Schaller stumbled upon the architectural anomaly of the controfacciata or counter-faade whilst exploring the magnificent Venetian palaces along the edges of the canals. These spaces at the front of the first floor lie still, in semi-darkness. The walls glow in twilight, the faded grandeur of earlier days discernible in the busts, furniture and paintings. From the end of the passage, light floods into the rooms, sapping the blazing colors of the decor. Doors off the hallway lead to unknown rooms and silent histories. Between 2004 and 2007 Schaller made a series of photographic studies of these hallways and corridors in the quarter between Ponte di Rialto and Piazza San Marco. Applying a direct elevation perspective, his images highlight the long hall that extends to the light-filled windows at the water's edge. They present an original view of the city, imbued with a haunting tension and the bittersweet paradox that is Venice.

Book Dutch Guns in Russia

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. A. Jablonskaja
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 9789040098833
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Dutch Guns in Russia written by E. A. Jablonskaja and published by . This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable proportion of the weapons collected by the Tsars and nobility of Russia over the centuries consists of Dutch firearms of the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of them evince not only an advanced technique, but also exceptionally beautiful decoration. This catalogue offers the first scientific treatment and classification of almost 320 of these Dutch firearms of the 17th and 18th centuries in the collections of the Moscow Kremlin Armoury, the Moscow Historical Museum, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersberg and the Gatchina Palace Museum near St. Petersburg. That Dutch firearms in particular are so well represented in Russian collections illustrates the strong political and economical relations of Russia and the Dutch Republic in this period. They were collected from different sources, mainly as a result of the large-scale trade in military firearms between the Dutch Republic and the Tsars of Russia and from ambassadorial and merchant's gifts. The result of this important and heretofore neglected part of the Dutch history is now available for scholars as well as to the general public. --From dust jacket.
